Game 111 Open Thread - White Sox (61-47) at Royals (50-60)

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals, Aug 2, 2008 3:55 PM EDT

So much for making the White Sox pay for having Griffey in center. Well, he was probably "just having fun" and by the sheer force of his smile kept things under control. I'm quite glad I won't be subjected to the Fox telecast of tonight's game, as Griff is borderline Favre at this point in terms of media devotion, despite the fact that he's stewed in bitterness and paranoia for most of this decade.

Your pitching matchup Mark Buehrehelejrleed (3.69 ERA) versus Hiram Davies (4.34 ERA).

Two runs will not be enough today. Looking at the line-up before the game I would have put the over/under on Royals runs scored today at 2.5. Maybe the team will steal a win today.

Swisher would be a good choice

because he works the count and I don’t think he’s as bad as he’s shown this year. It looks to me like a clear case of batting a “bat control and speed” guy high in the line-up for no real tangible benefit.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

by NHZ on Aug 2, 2008 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where is JQ's stuff?

One signing doesn’t make a GM, good or bad, but I think that the jury might be swaying one way on GMDM’s offensive acquisitions (as opposed to his good pitching ones): Gathright, TPJ. At least they weren’t expensive (I think Gathright for Howell was bad, as you know. Not a big deal, it’s just Howell could potentially be useful as a setup guy or even back of the rotation starter, maybe, Gathright is a 5th OF).

But Guillen is taking the cake. Like I said elsewhere, I think he will have another hot streak. But it will have to be hot to get him up to “average” for an MLB HITTER, and as hot and long (that’s what she…) as the earlier one for him to be an average Corner guy.

I might be able to track it down.

It was back in January or February. I was pushing for the Royals to sign a good outfielder (Torii Hunter or Fukudome) or just resign Emil Brown to a one year deal and platoon him with Goeff Jenkins. I figured Guillen would only be a small upgrade over Emil Brown and thus not worth the mutit year $36M commitment.

Even though Emil has had a horrible year this has held up overall. Guillen has been worse then I expected him to be.

Goeff Jenkins, OPS .724 vs. Right Handed Pitching this season.

Emil could always hit Left Handed Pitching well.

So Jenkins would have given the Royals an okay bat vs. Right handed pitching and very good defense. Emil Brown would have given the Royals an okay bat vs. LHP and a good pinch hitter.

And it would have cost a third as much as Jose Guillen.

For what it's worth

Going into today’s game, Aviles is the only player in the lineup with an OPS+ above 97.

Davies has given up

3 runs in 4 innings, can we wait a bit to say that he’s not losing us the game?

There are a lot of reasons to hope for a Butler breakout

But one of my top ones is that if he starts to hit well, we can go back to laughing at his baserunning, rather than grinding out teeth.

As for Buehrle

We need to keep his pitch count down… he can stay in all game pitching like this.

Well to be fair

there’s still two more years, and maybe Jose will calm down a bit in his second year and not get off to such a terrible start OBP wise. Ask me again in the spring.

Hillman again gave up a stupid out on German stealing

and it cost the Royals a run again. He also almost cost them when he had German bunting on the first pitch.

It is great this line-up has scored six runs.

I hope they hold on today. This game looked a lot like a loss on paper.

We gave last night away. Tomorrow looks really good.

hit the home run on the game day highlights. God, I love the way he’s swinging the bat right now. Go Billy!

IE 7

maybe having the page reload every 2 seconds taxes the memory a bit?

Is your processor low-grade?

Though I think we need an overflow thread soon. Will, are you here to do that or should I?

Who the hell said that?

I’m pretty sure we’re seeing the end of Joey Gathright’s 4th OF status.

I hope so, anyway. Maybe someone will be stupid enough to trade for Gathright in the offseason. I know the Royals would never do something like that.

Just got here and wasn't paying attention to lineup

when I saw the Bus on first I thought the string was over for Gloadie
then I see he is in left. Need that grit in the lineup I guess
