Game 111 Open Thread - White Sox (61-47) at Royals (50-60)
Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals, Aug 2, 2008 3:55 PM EDT
So much for making the White Sox pay for having Griffey in center. Well, he was probably "just having fun" and by the sheer force of his smile kept things under control. I'm quite glad I won't be subjected to the Fox telecast of tonight's game, as Griff is borderline Favre at this point in terms of media devotion, despite the fact that he's stewed in bitterness and paranoia for most of this decade.
Your pitching matchup Mark Buehrehelejrleed (3.69 ERA) versus Hiram Davies (4.34 ERA).

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on Aug 2, 2008 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Where is JQ's stuff?
One signing doesn’t make a GM, good or bad, but I think that the jury might be swaying one way on GMDM’s offensive acquisitions (as opposed to his good pitching ones): Gathright, TPJ. At least they weren’t expensive (I think Gathright for Howell was bad, as you know. Not a big deal, it’s just Howell could potentially be useful as a setup guy or even back of the rotation starter, maybe, Gathright is a 5th OF).
But Guillen is taking the cake. Like I said elsewhere, I think he will have another hot streak. But it will have to be hot to get him up to “average” for an MLB HITTER, and as hot and long (that’s what she…) as the earlier one for him to be an average Corner guy.
RBIs are stupid.

I might be able to track it down.
It was back in January or February. I was pushing for the Royals to sign a good outfielder (Torii Hunter or Fukudome) or just resign Emil Brown to a one year deal and platoon him with Goeff Jenkins. I figured Guillen would only be a small upgrade over Emil Brown and thus not worth the mutit year $36M commitment.
Even though Emil has had a horrible year this has held up overall. Guillen has been worse then I expected him to be.

Goeff Jenkins, OPS .724 vs. Right Handed Pitching this season.
Emil could always hit Left Handed Pitching well.
So Jenkins would have given the Royals an okay bat vs. Right handed pitching and very good defense. Emil Brown would have given the Royals an okay bat vs. LHP and a good pinch hitter.
And it would have cost a third as much as Jose Guillen.

We've been over this...
but I’ll say it again, I don’t think Moore’s the only one to blame for this particular stupid move. I think more blame goes on Guillen and Hillman, since they’re the ones who sit in the dugout. Hillman watches Guillen limp around, and gives the okay? Stupid. Guillen limps around and hurts the team? Stupid. Playing through injuries that prevent you from playing well isn’t a gamer thing to do, it’s stupid.
