But I can also say watching this game is productive, since it’s going to be part of the newspaper. Being able to spin unproductivity as productivity: one of my finest traits.

First, grow up. That’s not called for. Second, you’ve got defensive upgrades at SS, 2B and 1B (and maybe LF, but that’s debatable).

by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions
They're all debatable.
In fact, one could argue that the defense was downgraded at every position except 2B.
And you coming in here mocking everyone in the midst of yet another “here’s five runs, try not to choke again” bullpen meltdown is far more uncalled for than me calling you a doofus. Especially considering all the terms I could have used instead.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

Please
In fact, one could argue that the defense was downgraded at every position except 2B.
Not with a straight face.
And you coming in here mocking everyone in the midst of yet another "here’s five runs, try not to choke again" bullpen meltdown is far more uncalled for than me calling you a doofus. Especially considering all the terms I could have used instead.
You really don’t think that there is something magical about a 5-run lead do you? Do you really think from the very small sample of 5 runs leads that the Royals have had that there is something special about the Royals and 5-run leads that they are particularly precarious? 4 and 3 run leads are fairly safe, but 5-run leads are precarious.
Jon, I was speaking reason. You were hitting the panic button (without good cause). And yet I get called a doofus. Just keep the childish name calling to yourself, please.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
And yet, I called it.
If Hillman doesn’t do that thing he’s refused to do all season (bring Soria in early), we probably blow yet another five-run lead in the 8th/9th inning.
Don’t give me your “magic” nonsense. It’s a pattern with this team, which means it is real. For some reason, this team does not lock down in a non-save opportunity in the late innings, and melts down.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
I know you understand the concept of sample size
I don’t know why you refuse to apply it. In a very small sample of 5-run leads, they’ve blown them. There’s no reason to believe they’ll continue to blow them if the bullpen is healthy and not completely gassed. A small sample of data does not make a pattern. And, going beyond that, there’s no reason or logic to assume that this small sample is meaningful. Given the lead, the defensive substitution and defensive improvement made a lot of sense. I hope he does it with every 5-run lead.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, yes, whatever.
It’s not your place to come lecture your wayward children in order to prove your superiority when they get emotional, either. It’s one thing when it’s some jackass ranting endlessly about how Butler sucks and shouldn’t even be on the team just because he strikes out once, but it’s another entirely to come in here and be a jerk to people when they’re on the edge of their seat worrying about holding a lead.
I’m done.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Jeez Jon, take a pill
It’s not your place to come lecture your wayward children in order to prove your superiority when they get emotional, either.
It’s my place to make whatever comments I feel like making. Is it a poster’s “place” to overreact to anything and everything negative that happens in any Royals game? No, but many do it anyway. That’s what they feel like posting. I occasionally feel like pointing out the ridiculousness of some of these overreactions. In the case of your defensive replacement post, I assumed that you weren’t just making an emotional overreaction because that usually isn’t what you do.
We all deal game stress in our own ways. I avoid game threads because of the emotional, irrational whackiness and negativity which pervades them. I stopped by because we had a safe 5-run lead in the 8th inning. All of the sudden things turned to shit, dozens of posters hit the panic button and overreacted. And I made some comments. I’m as entitled to my own knee-jerk reactions to the silliness in this thread as other posters are entitled to their emotional reactions to the game and the posts that flow from them.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh, and "not with a straight face"
We’ve got numbers which show Butler’s actually better than Gload.
We’ve got numbers which show Aviles is actually better than Pena.
It’s not much of a stretch to guess Gload is better than German in LF.
You can’t sit here and be a condescending jerk and lecture me on sample size in the face of a pattern which has been there all season long, while at the same time ignoring the other numbers you don’t like. Tired of you doing that. You don’t get to pick and choose.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Do you remember at all what Gopherballs told you about the small sample size of RZR from 2/3 of a season?
I think you know that TPJ is better than Aviles defensively. I think you know Gload is better than Butler defensively. And no, Gload is not and never was better than German in LF. Gload’s range is much less than German’s (even though German sucks in LF too).
Is pointing out the importance and relevance of sample size “lecturing you.” It was very important to your “pattern” argument. “All season long,” does not make a significant sample size. I mean, how many times are we talking about here? Not many at all.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions
For the record
I’m not entirely sure that the difference between Gload and Butler isn’t negligible.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on Aug 2, 2008 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I think it is much more than negligible
The one and only thing that Gload does well is 1B defense. He’s not a huge range guy. But he does handle balls in his zone very well. If a line drive is hit to 1B, Gload is much more likely to snag it than Butler. If an IFer makes a poor throw, Gload is much more likely to pick it.
But of course, the fact that Gload is much better defensively than Butler isn’t very meaningful in the bigger picture. Even great 1B defense isn’t very valuable. It certainly makes sense to use Gload as a defensive replacement late in games though.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I guess to have a final verdict
we need a full season of Butler playing first, which won’t happen. Either way, really the point isn’t about defense…and for the record I think the Royals can definitely survive Butler’s glove at first if it means being able to bring someone who can hit to play DH.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
by NHZ on Aug 2, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I completely agree about Butler's defense being good enough and that he should be the man there
It’s the same situation with Aviles. His defense, while not great, is more than sufficient, given his bat (even if he loses dozens of points off of his OPS). But I like using defensive replacements for both of them late in the game when the Royals have a lead. I think that gives the team the best chance to win.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Aug 2, 2008 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Butlers defense
is much better than he gets credit for. His hands are very good. Gloads weaknesses are the same as Billy’s, lack of range. Therefore if the only thing Billy does worse is handle a line drive then I wouldn’t replace him when he is a much much better hitter.
Billy’s handling of wayward throws to first base has been very very strong.
