Game 127 Open Thread - Royals at Indians

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians, Aug 21, 2008 12:05 PM EDT

We now return to the first chapter of Sister Carrie, when I last posted this in an overflow thread, we were just wrapping up the third paragraph.

Caroline, or Sister Carrie, as she had been half affectionately termed by the family, was possessed of a mind rudimentary in its power of observation and analysis. Self-interest with her was high, but not strong. It was, nevertheless, her guiding characteristic. Warm with the fancies of youth, pretty with the insipid prettiness of the formative period, possessed of a figure promising eventual shapeliness and an eye alight with certain native intelligence, she was a fair example of the middle American class--two generations removed from the emigrant. Books were beyond her interest--knowledge a sealed book. In the intuitive graces she was still crude. She could scarcely toss her head gracefully. Her hands were almost ineffectual. The feet, though small, were set flatly. And yet she was interested in her charms, quick to understand the keener pleasures of life, ambitious to gain in material things. A half-equipped little knight she was, venturing to reconnoitre the mysterious city and dreaming wild dreams of some vague, far-off supremacy, which should make it prey and subject--the proper penitent, grovelling at a woman's slipper.

"That," said a voice in her ear, "is one of the prettiest little resorts in Wisconsin."

"Is it?" she answered nervously.

The train was just pulling out of Waukesha. For some time she had been conscious of a man behind. She felt him observing her mass of hair. He had been fidgetting, and with natural intuition she felt a certain interest growing in that quarter. Her maidenly reserve, and a certain sense of what was conventional under the circumstances, called her to forestall and deny this familiarity, but the daring and magnetism of the individual, born of past experiences and triumphs, prevailed. She answered.

He leaned forward to put his elbows upon the back of her seat and proceeded to make himself volubly agreeable.

"Yes, that is a great resort for Chicago people. The hotels are swell. You are not familiar with this part of the country, are you?"

"Oh, yes, I am," answered Carrie. "That is, I live at Columbi City. I have never been through here, though."

"And so this is your first visit to Chicago," he observed.

All the time she was conscious of certain features out of the side of her eye. Flush, colourful cheeks, a light moustache, grey fedora hat. She now turned and looked upon him in full, the instincts of self-protection and coquetry mingling confusedly in her brain.

out of a backup SS,

i can accept a K where he fights off some pitches and makes the pitcher work (7 pitches). not ideal, obviously, but much less frustrating that watching him hack three times and back to the bench

by benfunke on Aug 21, 2008 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

Its weird

It looks like he’s trying to hit home runs. I mean, at least if you look at light hitting infielders of the 80s, many of them were still pesky and could fight pitches off. TPJ just has such a big looping swing – it seems like he should at least have double power, but for whatever reason, he doesn’t.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Aug 21, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

right

at least if his hacking nature produced some big hits (Guillen, anyone?) we could cut him some slack, but TPJ’s swing is a lose/lose situation.

I am watching on MLB.tv

and I must disagree with the booth on the Guillen play. He ran towards the second baseman, then he fell down. He should have just stopped a lot sooner. It’s probably a moot point though; he would have just been in a run-down after they threw to first to get Butler.

The Indians announcers are being pretty hard on TPJ’s choice of glasses. It’s pretty funny.

Knocks against management

1) Constantly run ourselves out of innings, make horrible % sacrifcies at horrible times.

2) Cannot seem to grasp simple defensive concepts like getting out of the way of each other. You have to admit we are the worst team in baseball at this – and this isn’t a reflection on coaching I don’t know what is. Even untalented guys know how to call each other off.

3) In love with TPJ and Ross Gload, Aviles had to absolutely nuts to win his job.

4) Failure to develop Butler and Gordon as good major-league hitters, and most other hitters seem to have regressed.

5) Refusal to ever use Soria more than one inning, painful use of Gobble and Peralta at horrible times.

We need more talent, agreed. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still evaluate the manager.

by suzzer on Aug 21, 2008 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

seriously?

1) Hillman doesnt run the bases & Kunts is one of the most respected BR coaches in the game.

2) Hillman, Torre, Stengel, none of them can polish turds

3) In love w/ Gload, the TpJ could have EASILY cam e grom GMDM

4) Development isn’t made at MLB level, its’s made at MiLB level

5) sigh

Re: seriously?

1) Have you not been watching this season, particularly late in close games?

2) Are you sersiouly trying to contend that you cannot coach guys not to run into each other and drop routine flies? Wtf do you think coaches do?

3) possible

4) Yes, but it’s continued at the big league level, in teaching guys how to adjust to big league pitching, adjust to pitcher’s adjustments, etc. Butler and Gordon have regressed.

5) You can argue this either way. But a lot of people think it’s a pretty big waste to hold your dominant closer until the 9th to a religious extreme.

Coaching

“Are you sersiouly trying to contend that you cannot coach guys not to run into each other and drop routine flies? Wtf do you think coaches do?”

That’s done at the lower levels. At this level, either you know how to catch a pop up or you don’t. You can try, but you’re probably not going to teach a 26 year old man how to catch a pop up.

EVERY manager in baseball stresses fundamentals in spring training. But I think Rob Neyer said it best when he suggested that maybe players that are not good at hitting and fielding aren’t going to be good at fundamentals. Not because their manager is bad, but because…maybe they’re just bad ballplayers?

When Wathan was the Royals coach, we had a very tight defense. When McRae took over, we still had a very good defense. But as the year wore on we started to get sloppier and sloppier. And by the next year we were pretty bad defensively – with many of the same players. Good coaches teach a lot of little details. Just like anything. People who are good at their jobs usually don’t let the little things slide.

Then why do teams even have coaches?

Other than 3B/1B/manager. Because according to you guys all players are already developed by the time they get to the big leagues, and coaches have no impact on how well they play or future development from then on.

by RoyalsRetro on Aug 21, 2008 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

use common sense

Do you know of any job where you’re as good as your ever going to get after doing it for 3 years? Ok maybe janitor. But something where you’re at the bleeding edge of human performance, like a professional athlete?

I’ve been a computer programmer for 10 years and I still learn a ton every year, and not just because things are new, general programming stills. But you think when a player is 21/22 that’s as good as he’s going to get, and a good/bad coach can’t make much difference?

I know you can use stats to predict ranges of how a player’s career will map out. But those just show aggregate trends. They don’t show individual stuff that happened to that player, especially developmental type stuff in adjusting to the big leagues.

by suzzer on Aug 21, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying

There is nothing to be learned. But the fundamentals of the game have to be learned at an early age. They’re not going to be learned at the MLB level.

Now, there are things players can learn at the MLB level. But I don’t believe catching a pop up is one of them.

Besides, as many others have pointed out, what do you think Trey should do that he isn’t already doing? For all we know they run pop up drills every day. Maybe they’re just not good at it. I could work on hitting a 95 mph fastball all day every day, but I probably wouldn’t ever get good at it.

Those are still mostly talent issues

1. When players GIDP all the time and make base-running mistakes then, yeah, we are running ourselves out of innings.
2. Coaches have to teach major leaguers to call for the ball? Get real.
3. No argument
4. Can’t argue too much, but sometimes it’s more up to the hitter than a coach, either they are great hitters or just average.
5. Um, did you watch the game last night? Yeah, Hillman brought him in with 1 out in the 8th, Soria blew it. It sucked.

2. Coaches have to teach major leaguers to call for the ball? Get real.

When they repeatedly fail to do so? Are you HONESTLY saying the coach should just sit back and take it because major league-ers should know better?

by suzzer on Aug 21, 2008 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

But how do you know that he hasn't?

How do you know what the coaches are stressing? For all we know, he talks about it every day, I sure heard him talking about it on the pregame show yesterday before the game. So what if you knew that he was preaching it and then the players were still not executing? I just get sick of people making assumptions about things when they have no idea if they are true.

IMHO, coaching in baseball is not that important, I think many sabermetric guys on this site have explained that managers account for +/- 3-4 wins a season.

by I need more Esteban on Aug 21, 2008 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

scratch that, not coaching

I’m not the only one who marvels at how the Royals continue to make routine popups look like madcap adventures. Ask Frank White.

by suzzer on Aug 21, 2008 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

so if a coach stresses it

then there is no way that it won’t be executed? You do not KNOW from any results. Until you get into the clubhouse and onto the field before games then you won’t. Just like I don’t KNOW either, but I won’t make judgements about things I don’t know about.

by I need more Esteban on Aug 21, 2008 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Teams are ultimately measured by results

One outfield flub could be an anomoly. When your team is consistently the worst at it, that could be a strong indicator that fundamentals aren’t being stressed enough.

Sabermetrics is overreaching on that one

“IMHO, coaching in baseball is not that important, I think many sabermetric guys on this site have explained that managers account for +/- 3-4 wins a season.”

Skills erode over time if not reinforced properly. How the hell does sabermetrics measure that? I agree with a lot of the sabermetrics stuff, but trying to asses manager wins is pretty silly.

by suzzer on Aug 21, 2008 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Skills erode overtime

Because players get older. Players decline in fielding for the same reasons they decline in hitting. They’re just not as athletic as they were in their younger days.

How is Gordon worse than last year?

Butler, that is debateable, I think he played in a lot fewer games last year so I don’t know how to measure that. I did expect a lot more from him this year.

by I need more Esteban on Aug 21, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Players will often go through variations throughout a career

Ups and downs, but generally they will peak around age 26-28, and decline after that. Simply because Gordon and Butler will go through one down year doesn’t disprove my general point that skills erode because players get older. Its obvious if you’ve looked at any player career stats – they tend to decline over time. Otherwise, players would never retire.

Besides, Gordon has improved this year.

Don't Stop Believing!

by KC Chris on Aug 21, 2008 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

If that's true

then why do we have a minor league? Why do we have coaches at all? If young players are supposed to inately cope with struggles at this level, why don’t we have Hosmer in the lineup today?

It’s a growth process. Both Gordon and Butler didn’t have enough time at lower levels and aren’t getting the support they need. Personally, I think they should get both guys a personal hitting coach that does nothing but work with them. In leieu of that, Barnett should be spending 100% of his time with these two and stop wasting time on TPJ.

by Big Guy on Aug 21, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Who the hell are you going to sign that can coach Butler better than he can?

This guy has been labeled a prodigy, do you really think some washed up former player is going to magically make him into the next Manny Ramirez? If he wants to succeed at this level, he’s going to have to adapt when pitchers adapt to him. It’s a learning process, but for some reason I doubt there is any one person we can just swoop up that will magically make Billy Butler a major league force. Aviles has made the adjustment, why can’t Butler? Does Barnett not get the praise for Aviles success? I don’t get it

I agree that

Butler and Gordon may have gotten here too early, Gordon moreso, but both have shown the ability to destroy in the minor leagues. Failing at this point is on them.
