Dude, you know what I thought was really bizarre.
I was going to to Bannister’s good games in 07, and looking at the pitch f/x data – unless they changed the system, his stuff was WAYYY different then than it has been this year. Looked like a totally different pitch assortment. It was weird.

There have been a couple games where he was working 90-92
But mostly around 90, where last year he was like he is tonight – 85-89 a lot. I don’t know how much that is a difference in park radar guns though.

because it's a hitter's count and percentages say it's going to be a fastball
Fastballs are easy to hit on the outer half when your trying to hit them that way… bad luck that Verlander missed so badly. If we have the IF moving, we have 1st and 3rd, no outs… . best avg guy in the bigs coming up.

It's a horrible gamble when your offense sucks ass
And can barely do anything right. THe idea that you need to play it more aggressive when you’re struggling offensively is asinine. yes, let’s gamble giving away more outs that we can’t afford to give away. THe idea that since we’re losing, we need to up our bet, is just terrible strategy.

it seems like a bad play to a closed mind
but to an open baseball mind, a lot of managers entertain the thought of it there. Many execute it there. Like I said, good baserunner, hitters count, we got the fastball, if Esty swings we have 1st and third as the defense was moving…. bad luck was that Verlander about took Esty’s hands off….

I said earlier this year that I would trade any two KC OFers for Granderson
maybe a big of an overstatement, but… just 27, 3-4 years still FA, I think. Hits better than anyone on the Royals now. Could hit in any of the first 4 spots for the Royals. Good defensive CF (last I checked).

I guess Sizemore's probably better overall as a player
But I do remember Granderson being a stud in D, but it was so long since I checked I didn’t wan tto overdo it. I’m guessing Granderson’s the better defender (better arm, for sure), but Sizemore’s a better hitter.
Teahen + Gathright for Granderson? It’d be a blow, but I’d do it.

he could totally have gotten Granderson
Poor DDJ. Good CF, but gets stuck in a division with Sizemore, Granderson, and until this year, Toriiiii Hunter (who, I should say, I would rank 3rd out of those guys. Maybe I"m talking out of my ass, but I said it. I don’t even include age there, for one year, I would take Sizemore or Granderson over Hunter.)

More Granderson fan porn, or, How Scouting Works
I remembered this cool quote frrm a while back from Sickels:
He lasted until the third round because scouts didn’t like his tools. The word was that his speed and athleticism were mediocre, and that he wouldn’t hit for much power with wood. But that’s not what I saw in him. I saw a player with solid tools, a good measure of refinement, and a fine track record. He also had a good work ethic and was intelligent.
Now, I’ve been watching baseball games for 30 years, but I’ve never had formal scout training. So I wasn’t sure that I was right about Granderson. I’ve been wrong about personal “toolsy” calls in the past, so I like Granderson because (so far at least) he’s confirmed my original judgment of him. The funny thing is, as Granderson has played well up the ladder, more and more scouts talk about how he has pretty decent tools after all.
[my emphasis above]

I've been meaning....
to start a thread about this….
But does anyone else notice that Buck MISSES more mistakes pitches than any other MLB hitter in history?

I'd disagree

Is "dead" modifying "fastball" or "hitter" in that sentence?

LOL EXACTLY
One of the reasons he’s looked so DEAD at the plate recently is because every time he guesses fastball, it isn’t, and even when he is right he swings right through it. He’s all sorts of messed up.

Another irrational fear
that the Royals will (understandably) let Teahen go, then at 30, he’ll start OPSing .850.
Damn you, RoyalsRetro, for planting that thought in my head.

True
I still say Mark Teahen is the Allard Baird of players — useful, but just doesn’t have the tools to do the job the Royals need(ed) him to do. I’ll do a short long writeup of it sometime.

Yes but
that doesn’t mean his bat speed is all that great. Bat speed has to do with making adjustments to sharp breaking balls as well.

Yeah, I'm just saying he can hit a good fastball
He’s not one of those guys that can simply not hit 98 at the knees or whatever. And there are a few guys like that in baseball.

Any sort of prospect at all? Or just an organzational player getting a shot due to injuries or suckitude a la Aviles? Any chance he’ll start next year?

I think GMDM will do it
I’m sure he’s just as curious as we are to see what he’d do in the big leagues, he just doesn’t want to look like he’s rushing him. But now with everybody on the damn team hurt, he has a legit excuse to get him up here. We just need Gload to blow out a hammy.

I know it sounds stupid
but Kila’s so hot, it gives the feeling that it just CAN’T be anything but a fluke, like Brady Anderson or something.
Same problem with Avilanche. I’m glad he’s “slumping” a little bit now, otherwise it would just seem “fake.”
I think you guys know what I"m talking about.
