Game 129 Open Thread - Tigers at Royals
Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals, Aug 23, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
This is a sorta funny moment in Herodotus, during a section when he's discussing the shape and size of the world. Hyperboreans were a mythical race thought to inhabit the far north and to possess a number of wonderful qualities.
If however there are Hyperboreans, it follows that there are also Hypernotians; and I laugh when I see that...
I laugh too...
Happy Saturday everyone. I'm still in Ireland.

Future Royals update
Pat Burrell went knocked in five and homered to bring his season line up to .268/.390/.556.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
I'm here sort of. I'm guessing a lot of people are getting ready to watch the Chiefs.
They haven’t blown the season YET.
They will
They’ve got some players that’ll make the season tolerable for you Chefs fans, though. Bowe comes to mind, for example.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
Bowe might be a lot like Soria this year.
Good when he can get the ball, but might have a major problem actually getting the ball.
He got the ball last year
to the tune of 995 yards. A lot rides on whether Croyle can be competent, though.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
He won't be.
Chiefs won’t be good until Croyle is not QB.

Oh, forgot that the Zubaz nation
was firing up the El Camino.
I don’t mean to be a downer, but Burrell and Dunn aren’t going to be playing here next year or ever. My opinion, just a prediction, but DM is not going to up the payroll to $80 mm+ next year based on his comments to date. It will be a combination of trades and low-rent FA signings. Gload will still be at 1B and entirely complete his contract.
This team isn’t going to really make a move forward until DM’s draft picks get up here. If they end up not being any good, not sure what happens.
I hereby resign from this post.

What comments are you referring to?
From where I’m sitting, it looks as if the Royals are set to increase the payroll.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
based on?
I hereby resign from this post.
by Home Run Tony Cogan on Aug 23, 2008 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Based on the money coming off the books,
based on Glass’s recently willingness to shell out the dough, based on a draft where we went over slot money several times. Based on the next few years being the cheap years of some of our good young players.
Where’s these comments you’re talking about?
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
That it does
I’m saying that I think we’ve shown a willingness to spend money recently and I don’t think Glass is going to be crying poor like he has in the past.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
How long do you think he'll wait?
The thing that worries me about waiting too long is A) the brass might get tired of the losing and fire Moore before his plan comes around and B) I think we need to see some progress soon given the abr clocks of players such as Gordon, Butler, and maybe even Aviles. These guys won’t be young and improving forever. (duh I know)
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
DDJ is another guy
who might not be around if we’re going to have wait much longer to attempt to contend.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
I don't know. I do think he'll support Dayton and won't can him unless
we’re in the same boat 5 years from now. I just think both Moore and Glass understand that the Royals are still a long ways from being able to put a solid line up on the field every day. My guess is if Aviles continues to play like he has and both Gordon and BamBam have good years next year, it will be the following offseason.
I'd also be surprised to see a payroll increase.
Mainly because I don’t Glass wants to do it unless there will be clear results. I think if we were one or two players away, Glass would be more than happy to pay for them.
my comments
are based on multiple interviews where DM has indicated that we can’t sustain a payroll of $75+ unless we’re drawing > 2mm fans, and more like 2.5. I am making an assumption that the payroll increase will not come until the attendance increases.
This is also pure speculation, but I think that DM’s vision of the team’s future is much longer term and therefore he isn’t going to go after anymore free agents until the team’s performance warrants it. The recent moves made were IMO more to get this team to a major-league baseline level so that fan interest didn’t totally tank. Throw in the fact that we had Sweeney’s $$ coming off the books, and it was easy to make the Meche and Guillen decisions.
I hereby resign from this post.
by Home Run Tony Cogan on Aug 23, 2008 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Response
We could add some payroll and still not be over that 75 million figure for next season, especially if we can find a taker for Guillen. Also, I disagree that it was “easy” to make the Meche and Guillen decisions. Signing Meche was a risky move that has worked out well. Signing Guillen was a risky move that so far hasn’t worked very well. I don’t think either was particularly easy.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
easy from the standpoint
that we had $$ coming off the books and adding the players was pretty much a wash payroll-wise. Agree with you that both were higher risk moves but just saying that it didn’t take a significant new investment.
My take on the situation is that he’s not going to go much higher than we’re at now until we’re much, much closer to being contenders.
I hereby resign from this post.

I mentioned some of what I wanted to say
in response to Warden. I’m wondering, if what you say is true, how long do you think he’ll wait?
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
I posted a response above but I'll put it here just to make sure you see it.
If Aviles, Gordon, and Butler all have a good year next year- I think it will be the following off season.
Yep, I saw it
I’d have to look up the free agent class to know exactly what to think, but on the surface it seems to make sense.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
I don't know
I mean, I agree with you that Glass isn’t going to wait forever, but it seems like we’re already into the first phase of “well, these players suck so we’ve got to wait until the next wave” of DM’s tenure. Bannister is not an answer, Guillen isn’t an answer, Teahen (I know not a DM guy but someone we were counting on) isn’t an answer, Davies isn’t an answer, and we still really don’t know for sure about Butler, Gordon, Aviles, Hochevar. So, there are still A LOT of holes to fill – I count at least 5: Guillen, Teahen, Gload, Bannister, Davies. So let’s say then that Aviles comes back to earth, then you’re looking at about 1/4 of your roster that really isn’t productive. That’s not anywhere close to being ready to contend.
At some point, there have got to be some guys that actually come through and really produce. Potential is only going to go so far, we’ve been hearing that for 15 years. If these guys aren’t going to produce, why should DM burn a lot of cash trying to help them out? Better to wait until “his guys” are ready to produce and then supplement.
Believe me, I hope I’m wrong, I’d like to contend next year with 2-3 additions. Unfortunately, I think it’s going to take a whole lot more than even that. I don’t think we’ve really come to grips with how far Baird/Glass ran this franchise into the ground. It’s going to take a LONG, LONG time IMO to recover. I would compare it to Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans, it may never really come back.
I hereby resign from this post.

Eek
I think your comparison is a little bit dramatic. Personally, I think all the good pitching the system could make our chance at competing in a relatively weak division sooner rather than later if Moore choses the right FAs on offense and cuts bait on some of the chaff.

I sure am glad we're bunting
I’d hate to think we were trying to preserve our outs what with our punchless lineup.
A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.
Bunting is a double edged sword with a team like the Royals.
For bunting: We don’t hit with any power, so we really struggle scoring guys from first. Bunting allows them to possibly score on weak base hits.
Against bunting: like you said, giving away any outs for a team that struggles offensively doesn’t make sense. I don’t like it early in the game.
Okay,
run expectancy shows that bunting is usually a bad idea, especially when trailing in a game. Let’s toss that out the window and ask this question:
With Aviles—Mr. XBH—on deck, why would we want to give up an out to move Teahen—an excellent baserunner—to second? It makes no sense.

Guillen has not had a productive at bat in a “sensitive” situation in a very long time. Teabag has been disappointing most of the season. We have a lot of work to do…
