100 loses is still possible and I think we'd better watch out that we don't reach it. We have to go 7-24 to lose 100. 8-23 to lose 99. With the way we're playing, what's the verdict?

hope not
And it’s sad that we’re doing this bad…cuz this team has way more talent than any of the past three years.

This team is playing absolutely horrible and at this point I think it will
take an act of god not to hit the 100 loss mark.

Who's looking to be the #1 pick in 2009?
Might not be the worst thing to be the worst team in the league. Sometimes, it’s worse to be second worst in the league.

If we got the #1 pick, Moore would just screw it up
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

He has to OPS at least 1.047 at every level of the minors
anything less and he’s a bust.

The Royals trade picks backwards?
I’d love to trade The Royals first round pick in 2009 for the Orioles 2007 first-rounder…

Not that Moustakas doesn't look great
Seriously. But why didn’t the Royals go for Wieters? Was it signability?

Yes
More than a few teams were scared off by him. He was easily the #2 consensus overall pick behind Price, but signability was a factor.

Before the season started, he was the consensus #2 overall pick behind Price
But by the draft, the second best player in the draft (according to BP, BA and others) was a toss up. After Price, there was a large group and no player was particularly close to being a consensus #2 pick.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Just wondering
I would be a lot of fun to see him in KC by the middle of 2009.
I know this crowd (‘cause it’s a bunch of guys like me — former HS debaters always ready to rip someone), I’m not criticizing DMGM or Moustakas or anything over this. That’s the way the draft goes, from what I can tell. I guess other teams would have passed on sigability issues, too. (Unless it’s the Astros. They’re just stupid.) Singability is a big deal, but even leaving that aside, it seems that talent evaluation at the top (especially right after the first pick) has a hard to making distinctions about how guys are going to hit, play D, etc. Cf. this year’s consensus that Beckham was #1, but after that, the debates about Hosmer, Posey, Alvarez, Smoak, etc.
I just wondered what the “process” was last year.

The High School thing
Isn’t it the Braves’ way to prefer high schooler’s to college guys? I can think of two reasons: 1) higher upside—if the college guy was that potentially good, he would have been drafted out of H.S. (although comes with perceived greater risk of failure). He’s passing on possible stars to try to get possible superstars. 2) Moore is trying to draft career players. He has spoken often of wanting to have control of players through their 27-28 year old seasons. For top level H.S. who make it to the show on time (think around 21-22), that’s realistically going to be right at the point they can hit the market (a college guy might make it to 30 before he can be a free agent), so I think he is anticipating being able to sign extensions with the biggest talents (although this seems wrongheaded when you see he’s picking Boras’ guys). He’s trying to rebrand the Royals so that someday guys like Moustakas and Melville will be like Chipper Jones and John Smoltz—career guys who spend a whole bunch of productive years in KC.
Sometimes you just gotta roll the potato.

Maybe
If he really is going for “career guys,” I’m thinking drafting Boras clients wouldn’t be the way to go…
I think (at least in the early rounds) he’s just drafting the guys he thinks will be are most likely to turn out to be the best players. That’s the right way to do it, if you ask me.

No 100 losses this year
Dude, we have 7 home games left against Seattle/Oakland.
They may be fading, but there is absolutely no way this team drops 100.
Besides, Meche and Greinke should still get about 6 starts more each – that’s 12 games where we should have a decent chance to win.

A more important question I think
Can we win 70? That’s a pretty big artificial barrier in my mind for some reason. We’d have to go 14-17 the rest of the way.

We're pretty much stuck at #4
Unless we REALLY suck down the stretch. Which is possible.
Anyways, there are three college players I LOVE for the draft next year.
1B/CF Dustin Ackley — Great pure hitter (I know at least one source that has compared him to Tony Gwynn, very high praise). Some think he will develop very good power too. Had TJ on his throwing elbow last week, should be fine for next year. Might be able to handle second base.
SS Grant Green — Been compared to Evan Longoria, but can stay at SS also. Yep. Pretty awesome.
RHP Stephen Strasburg — I think ya’ll know how good he is.
If we can get one of those, that’d be awesome.

Grant Green
Sounds good, although he’s a bit old… love his organ trio albums, though.
Also, keep in mind that by the time any SS shortstop gets to the high minors and is hitting well, there will instantly be anonymous scouts who “question whether he will stick at short.”
