Game 112 Open Thread - White Sox (61-48) at Royals (51-60)

Chicago @ Kansas City

Your pitching matchup is Clayton Richard (9.35 ERA) versus Zack Greinke (3.98 ERA).

Cannot... escape... Gload.

The Royals have climbed to 4-7 against the White Sox this season. For the curious, they're 2-7 against those beloved Twins (they do the little things!), 6-3 against the Tigers and 4-4 against the Tribe.

Gload in the OF is even more of an embarrassment

Not only is his hitting way, way below average for the position, but his defense is also way, way below average. Complete suckitude as an OFer.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The nature of baseball

The Royals should win this game. We should expect them to win this game.

Of course, the Royals are at the stage where they could very well lose this game. Not to sound like Joe Morgan, but bad teams (for the moment, anyway) like the Royals just aren’t gong to be consistent, especially when they are replying on young guys still finding their way (Gordon, Butler) and streaky hitters (Guillen).

No better illustration can be had than the Royals #5 guy (Davies) beating the Sox #1 (Buehrle) yesterday. So I can totally see a frustrating loss today with the best pitcher on either team (Greinke) not getting the win against a nobody.

Like I said—just preparing myself.

(On the other hand, Teahen may hit 4 homers. BANK IT)

and he was very close to being buried forever underneath Pena

I knew it was close, but Aviles actually leads DDJ in VORP, 21.5 to 19.6. And in almost 190 less PAs.

Yes, clearly we are fucked.

The EXACT SAME LINEUP that collected 19 hits yesterday.

But we are clearly up the creek without a paddle for putting a guy who has five multi-hit games in his last nine in the lineup (Gload).

The problem, though

is that THIS team would be better served in 2009 if Gload put up a .150/.180/.200 this year. The idea that he’s an answer at 1B in 2009 should terrify each and every one of you, regardless of how useful he may be over the last month.

by JobDDT on Aug 3, 2008 2:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

+1

Dead horse time, but THIS is the time when Shealy should be playing every day it doesn’t interfere with Butler in order to see if he has anything to contribute. Don’t wait until September. Figure out if he’s worth anything at this point for next year, and let Kila Monster and Stodolka get all the 1B/Dh time in Omaha.

by devil_fingers on Aug 3, 2008 2:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Meh.

Shealy’s useless. An .860 OPS in Omaha is, shall we say, not impressive.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 3, 2008 2:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I agree

He doesn’t have much to add. But he’s cheaper than Gload (and was recovering from injury, right/) and can’t be much worse. Why not try him now instead of wasting time next spring, when the Royals might have a new 1B anyway. If he sucks, then the Royals can cut bait on him AND Gload. And it allow the other guys in Omaha the PT they need.

Maybe if the Royals sign a cheap stopgap 1B/DH like Eric Hinske for next year, Shealy coudl be a good platoon partner.

Really, Shealy Doesn’t matter that much. the point is that we know Gload shouldn’t have a role.

by devil_fingers on Aug 3, 2008 2:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Do you think that GMDM thinks,

that Gload is the future at 1st for the Royals? Or just a stopgap until the younger guys are ready (kila…well i can’t think of anyone else right now, i guess shealy but he isn’t exactly young.)

by cfizzle on Aug 3, 2008 2:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I think that what GMDM thinks doesn't matter

unless he’s going to throw Hillman into the deep end of the pool by DingFA Gload this off-season and eating a year’s pay. If Gload’s on the roster next year, and continues “contributing” at this level, he’s going to play.
