Can Someone Get That Next Check Ready For Mr. Gload?
Thanks to another start tonight, The Boss is now at 391 plate appearances and only a handful of games from another bonus. As you'll recall, Ross is set to recieve a $50,000 bonus for reaching 300, 350 and 400 PAs.
We can do this the hard way
or the easy way.
Oh, dear me, will he hit 400 in two games or three? I hope so earnestly that we'll have extras or a 10-run outburst tomorrow, which would help The Explosion get that extra plate appearance that could make all the difference.
Once we clear 400 PAs, the Drive for 450 begins, which means an even more generous $75,000 dollar bonus.

If Ross Gload is a regular on the 2009 Royals team
…my opinion of Dayton Moore is going to go from mostly positive to mostly negative. It cannot be allowed. There would be no smart reason for it. If he’s on the bench, ok. If he’s a regular again, that would be an abomination.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Or
If the Royals can’t land Dunn and get him to play 1B, then some stopgap like Hinske now! Or if they can’t get someone like him, then some miscellaneous near average 1B stopgap now!
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

i'm ot averse to stopgaps at 1B for the next decade
since in theory generic bats are easier to find there
it’ll be interesting to see how the next off-season plays out… rightly or wrongly i think that the Era of Good Feeling between Dayton and the fans/media/Glass Family is about to end, and I’ll be curious about how he’ll respond to some real pressure and a potentially changed relationship with ownership

It's a crazy thought
But I wonder if that Butler kid might be worth trying at first?
If Rossie has to be on the roster (he doesn’t), then he can be the backup. Because you can’t get to 78 wins without a good 1B glove on the bench. (God forbig Ryan Shealy be allowed to take that role for the minimum, rather than shelling out competent reliver money to Gload)
Then just sign a stopgap DH bat, if necesary. I don’t know what Hinske’s going to need in the offseason. Maybe the Royals can get him and one of Dunn/Burrell. Of, if the big bats go, Furcal and Hinske, or something. After Manny, Tex, Dunn, and Burrell there isn’t much left. Bradley’s a one-year contract guy. So is Giambi. And Thome (although isn’t he close to his option for next year vesting anyway?). Those guys are too expensive for stopgaps.
Looking at Juan Rivera’s trends the last three years show him as declining. Maybe it’s the junury, but even his one big year had an unsustainable BABIP. He doesn’ hit line drives. He’s a poor man’s Jose Guillen. Not that he was a DH solution.
Anyway, If they have to sit Ross on the bench, whatever. I don’t think there’s anything he brings to the Royals that can’t be had for less money with equal or better performance elsewhere. He’s a 25th man on a contender. Maybe. I have a hard time believing in bench glove men who play first base, but if there is a place for them, it isn’t on the 2009 Royals. Within the current org, Shealy or even German can play that role.

I'm all for a stopgap DH
That’s why I usually refer to that hole as 1B/DH. Butler fills one and Moore needs to acquire someone else for the other.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I don’t think there’s anything he brings to the Royals that can’t be had for less money with equal or better performance elsewhere.
True, but the choice isn’t between paying Ross X dollars to be a bench player for the Royals vs. paying someone else less to do the same thing. If we’re already playing Ross the money, then play him. It wouldn’t make sense to release him and then pay someone else less to do about the same thing. Then we’re X + 80% of X for Ross-like production.
What we could should do is DFA him to see if someone else will pick him up. If he’s not claimed, then he can be outrighted. If he refuses the assignment, his contract is voided. If not, we still owe him the money, and we still have the above choice of whether to play him or not.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

its a dead-horse AND a probably sunk cost...
but its still stunning that Moore offered Gload a two year deal with an option for three
its like Appy State over Michigan, everytime I think about it I still get a little shock of surprise

do you think that GMDM ever rues that decision?
maybe in the middle of the night, he wakes up in a cold sweat and asks himself what he hath wrought?

since bottoming out in late june, ross has been decent
hitting .305/.355/.410
well, thats not really “decent” for a 1B, but its not awful I guess
his BA has bounced back, but his power is gone… even when he’s getting his singles he can’t slug .450 anymore

my feeling that Billy is showing a bit more power lately
the opposite field double last night was pretty good. Based on his swing, I figured it was a shallow flyout, but it carried all the way to the wall. My rose colored glasses tell me he may be snapping out of his singles slump

Is your sister hitting on you, too?
Just in case the nerdiness of a baseball blog isn’t bad enough, “Dune” has been a running meme all season. And I’ve been as bad as anyone. I’m pretty sure I invented the “Golden Path” tag. Gotta use that some more.
