Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Teams always give even the league minimum guys a small raise each year

That’s why Gordon is getting 406K and Butler is getting 399 K instead of the minimum which I believe is 390K. So he should get his raise.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I meant

maybe even more than that. I wouldn’t bat an eye if they paid him $450K.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't have a problem with $50K

But I probably wouldn’t do it if it were up to me. I wouldn’t want to set that precedent. It’s not like they’d kick his salary back down to league minimum if he failed in 2009.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

See, here's where I diverge from a strict P&L view.

I think a lot of times the association between player and team goes bad because the player perceives that the team doesn’t do anything they don’t have to until it’s time to start negotiating real contracts. I think, if you throw an extra $50K at a guy early, if he’s got any character at all you can use that later.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I just don't see that investment paying off

For the vast, huge majority of players, when they have the opportunity to get big money, they’ll go get it. I think it would be very rare for them to give home town discounts because the team threw him an extra 50K back when they didn’t have to. And when you start doing that, then every player is going to expect it. “I hit .290, where’s my $50K raise?” That kind of thing can snowball. Every player who doesn’t get the bigger bump is going to get pissed off. There is some downside here, in addition to dollar cost.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

"You didn't get it

because you didn’t come out of nowhere after having signed for a $1000 bonus. You got your $50K back when we signed you."

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't like the precedent of paying back for smaller signing bonuses either

Perhaps for some good, young prospects who you are worried about leaving when they are free agents. But I believe the Royals have control of Aviles through age 33. Are we worried about losing him to free agency at that age? I think we’ll be ready to see him go.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that there are times

when a major-league organization should treat its players as something other than chattel.

Your position is, essentially, “we have nothing to gain, let someone else pay him for what he’s actually contributed.” Financially, it’s smart.

Of course, financially, what Wal*Mart does is smart, too.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

when a major-league organization should treat its players as something other than chattel.

They should treat them like employees who are under a long-term employment contract which has certain terms and conditions. And I think investments like the one you are suggesting are wise if they have a good chance of providing a good return. I don’t think this one does. And I think it really does cause problems. Let’s say Aviles gets the big $50K raise. Do you think the golden boy of the franchise Alex Gordon or Billy Butler are going to happy that this guy who came out of nowhere to have a good 4 months is suddenly making $40K more than they are? Don’t you think this could breed bad feeling and resentment? This is the proverbial can of worms or pandora’s box…all for a small chance for a return in the future.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

If guys who got million-dollar signing bonuses

are fuckin’ infantile enough to care about $50K given to a guy who for all intents and purposes got NO signing bonus, then I don’t CARE whether it pisses them off. Seriously. Let them sulk, because if that’s enough to make them sulk they’re never going to amount to anything anyway.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

You should care if it pisses them off

Because those are guys we are going to want to stick around. So you want to do something to make one player happy without regard to how it makes other players feel? That doesn’t sound like good management.

I don’t know if they are going to sulk. But these guys have big egos. And yes it could piss them off. You want someone like Aviles to feel good about the organization for potential future benefit. Well, the truth is that this strategy could also lead to some resentment would could pay off in a bad way down the line. You have to take that into account.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I like what jonfmorse is saying here.

I think he makes a good point. Glass could easily say- we’re making sure that he doesn’t have to ever worry about paying his mortgage.

I just think we should wait a year to do it.

by Warden11 on Aug 30, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Would he have a problem making his mortgage payment on $400K a year?

If so, he’s purchased the wrong house.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

you missed my point.

Glass could easily say he’s just trying to make sure Aviles only has to worry about baseball.

Gordon and Butler have that luxury because of signing bonuses. Aviles has had to live off of minor league salaries. HUGE difference.

Maybe something like

an incentive which would kick in around then as a bonus, rather than actual salary?

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

If they're weak and pathetic enough

to be pissed off over $50K being given to someone who didn’t get the big signing bonuses they did, then no. I do not want them to stick around, because it means ANY little slight is enough to piss them off, and all they are going to be is problems.

This is not like you working at a job where you’ve worked your way up to making $90K and finding out someone’s been hired off the street for the same position at $150K. You think $50K will piss them off? Man, they must be totally livid over $12 million!!

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

For professional baseball players, the money they get shows their value and that they are getting respect

If everyone is getting around the minimum with little raises every year nobody is pissed. If selected players get big raises, of course some people are going to get pissed. That’s not weak and pathetic. That’s human nature. And if you are managing human beings (especially professional athletes who have big egos), you have to take human nature into account.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Also

Don’t you think Gordon and Butler are at least not-brain-damaged enough to realize that they’re going to make millions more than Aviles in the future?

Please, Scott. You’re not dense. Even if they initially said, “WTF?” it could be explained to them in very simple terms which would make them realize they’re playing for a GOOD organization rather than angering them. Seriously.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

No Jon, neither of us dense

If you think no one would have a nature and emotional overreaction to this which might be irrational, then you are giving human beings too much credit.

I see a lot of downside here and little upside. This isn’t going to breed team loyalty. No one has that anymore. Teams don’t have it. Players don’t have it. Everyone maximizes economic value. IMO, this would be a waste of money which could easily cause problems. That’s all I have to say.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

You do realize

that even if he’s already spent over half of it, Gordon makes more on the interest from his signing bonus than that $50K…

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just saying it can be done

without causing a serious friction. Yes, if it was just “Aviles is making $50K more than Gordon,” it would be a problem. But assuming he set aside a reasonable portion of his bonus, Gordon’s got a six-figure income even if his career ends tomorrow. Point that out to him, and all of a sudden giving Aviles an extra $50K (which doesn’t even do much to secure his future) doesn’t seem like such a big deal.

That’s where I’m coming from. If Aviles’ career ends tomorrow, he’ll have earned less in his professional baseball career than I earned in the last four years.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

You don't think players attach big significance to salary?

Yes, Gordon and Butler have been given more money by the organization. But salary is salary. It’s a number those guys all know and carry around with them. The salary, unlike the signing bonus, is what the organization is doing and saying right now about a player’s value. It is the “respect” they are showing the player right now. They could easily resent this happening. And it would be pretty standard human nature, not the most stupid, weak pathetic feeling any human being could ever have.

But since we’re talking about Aviles, let’s talk about Aviles. You said that the Royals should do this because it could help them in the future with Aviles. How so? They have him for six years after this one. That means they control him through age 33. Are you saying that they should invest some money in him now so that they can re-sign him or extend him into age 34? I don’t think I’m interested in investing resources to increase the Royals chances of having him for his decline phase.

If he were 24, you’d have a better argument, but I still wouldn’t do it. I’d be more interested in using $50-75K to increase all of the good league minimum players by more than they are getting now. But not by elevating one of them and breeding resentment in at least some of the others.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

There is more to keeping players happy and productive

than their free-agent contracts. Now, if you want to argue that an extra $50K doesn’t contribute to Aviles’ sense of security and relieve stress, I can buy that. At the same time, $50K can contribute to a player’s happiness and give him a sense that the organization does truly value him as a component in the near term. And you can’t argue the Gordon/Butler angle without acknowledging that benefit.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Aug 30, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Question

Are you saying that he’ll play better if the Royals give him the $50K because it increases his happiness and security?

And you can’t argue the Gordon/Butler angle without acknowledging that benefit.

No. I’m not arguing that the $50K raise is going to make them resentful and therefore it will hurt their performance. I’m arguing that it could make them resentful, making the chance of them signing a contract extension and not going to free agency less likely.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 30, 2008 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It really comes down to character

which you don’t care about, and I do, within a certain range.

If I’m in charge, and a guy’s resentful about me throwing a small sum of money at a guy to make up for basically no signing bonus… I don’t think it matters, ‘cause if he’s going to get resentful about that, he’s going to get resentful about every little thing. Which means he’s not likely to resign anyway.

As to the first question… well, hell, I know I worked a little harder and let fewer things get to me whenever I received an unexpected off-cycle raise. Sounds like a pretty obvious thing to me.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

Were you working to save your job on a daily basis? Aviles’s role on this team is anything but certain. He’s going to have to give 100% effort to keep his starting spot. The Royals could sign a FA or acquire another player by draft. This could happen in the offseason or during next season or at any time. Don’t you think he’s going to have a sense of urgency to play as hard as he possibly can? He doesn’t have the kind of job that you and I have.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

50 K isn’t much. It really won’t be much if he produces and the Royals want to keep him. I figure if his year next year is comparable to this year, he’ll get a new contract that pays him well enough to set up future generations of the Aviles clan.
