Official September Call Ups (even thought it hasn't "officially" come out yet). Not just juicy gossip.

I heard the following players have been called up to the show... they all come from AAA. I guess because the AA team is in the play-off race, they didn't call any of them up.

Yasuhiki Yabuta - sent down from the bigs not too long ago (5.36 ERA, 1.54 WHIP)

Kila Kaaihue - recently promoted from AA (.309 AVG)

Devon Lowery - promoted from AA in the beginning of the season (2.12 ERA, 1.31 WHIP)

Ryan Shealy - (.280 AVG) -- what are they going to do with now three first basemen???

So, who's coming off the 40-man to make room for 3 of them? They said they'd call up 4-6 players.... who are the other possible 2?

Thoughts?

don't know, but I'm glad that Kila got the call.

Even if he doesn’t get a lot of playing time, it will be good for him to be here.

We have to figure out if Shealy can play. Because of that, Gload’s playing time should basically disappear.

Shake Yabuta- yawn. Bust.

But at least Shingo,

Yabuta’s translator, will get more Major League service time. Good for Shingo.

Wow. What does Shingo do when Yabuta is in Omaha?

Does he have to ride the bus and everything? Or does Yabuta have to pay him the whole time out of his pocket?

He hangs out in the clubhouse and dugout,

and is loved by everyone. I don’t know who pays him, but I think it’s the KC front office.

Do you have a link for this?
what are they going to do with now three first baseman???

The confusion in the clubhouse has already begun! ;)

I hope Kila does great in whatever playing time he gets. And if he does, I invite the snarkiness which will come my way.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

They better switch shealy/kila in for Gload at first...

butler should still be DH but maybe an off day occasionally, Gload’s had enough time to be all glove and no power at first.

Is there anybody who could be moved to the 60-day DL?

Those players are not counted on the 40-man roster.

both should be there.

Maier broke his face. I highly doubt he’ll play again. Gordon is another that could easily be put there.

It's gonna be ugly

Sneaks into the dark Cleveland clubhouse, where Zach Johnson is sitting alone. Asks Zach if he’s been enjoying his time in the majors. MITCH flips his glove. It lands palm up. Beats Johnson to death with a fungo bat.

Trey Hillman, who order him to bunt, is waiting alone in the managers office, late at night…

I think I’m going to like MITCH…

The Kila Revolution Will Not Be Televised. At Least Not In Ontario.

Nonetheless, it has begun. In my deep, 12 team AL-only league, we do monthly supplemental drafts instead of waivers. We had our last meeting tonight, and I got beat out on Kila (didn’t have enough cap room left to get him). The word is out.

I’m glad if he comes up. It’s frustrating that they didn’t being Shealy up earlier, since they should platoon the two now (keep Kila in situations where he’s most likely to succeed, that’s what I say, i.e., no lefites), and that means they aren’t likely to find out much about Shealy in just a few ABs. But good news nonetheless.

The "official" word above may not be so official

According to the KC Star:

It will be a more-crowded clubhouse Tuesday when the Royals open a three-game series against Oakland at Kauffman Stadium. Hillman has already indicated the club plans to add four to six players once the rules permit rosters to expand.

The Royals took the first preliminary moves Sunday by recalling left-handed pitchers Jimmy Gobble and John Bale from their minor-league rehab assignments. That decision is a likely precursor to adding both to the active roster before Tuesday’s game. Lefty reliever Ron Mahay should also be activated Tuesday after experiencing no problems Sunday with his sore left foot in a bullpen workout.

First baseman Ryan Shealy is also expected to be recalled. Other top candidates currently on the 40-man roster include catcher Matt Tupman and pitchers Neal Musser and Josh Newman.

Club officials continue to debate whether to add first baseman Kila Kaaihue to the roster.

So what we have at this point is:

Officially
Gobble
Bale

Likely
Shealy

Possibly
Tupman
Musser
Newman
Kaaihue

I’d still like to know where “baseballfandan” got his information from. People shouldn’t be reporting some news as the “official” word if it is just speculation.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

This could be overly optimistic

but what are the chances that Gload gets cut in favor of Shealy as the backup 1B? I think Shealy essentially provides the same utility with a little more power and a little less glove. I hope Kila plays everyday at 1B.

by lordbyronk on Sep 1, 2008 9:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Shealy over Gload

I doubt that is really a option for Hillman as Shealy’s range has decreased. I think the chances of Shealy being on the ’09 roster is pretty low unless he blows up this September.

4 players for 2 spots in the lineup

Butler, Gload, Shealy and Kaaihue for 1B and DH. The only smart way to to handle this is to bench Gload most of the time and let Butler, Shealy and Punch share 1B and DH. But will Gload see that much time on the pine? I hope so. I kind of doubt it.

Butler can still get a day off every now and then. And I’d rather have Gload play a little than overexpose Kaaihue. But that can be accomplished by playing a lot of Shealy. With Oakland coming to town with 3 LH SP KC has a nice opportunity to get Shealy in the lineup and maybe even play Kila against one lefty since the league doesn’t know his weaknesses yet. IMO I wouldn’t sit Butler until he cools down at all (7gm hit streak .464BA .786 SLG)

This isnt very relevant and you probably won't be believe me but

I talked to Eric Hosmer on the phone Saturday night. Unfortunately it was loud and I didn’t get to say much, but I did learn this much from him:

He’s gonna start in Burlington next year.
He was always gonna sign, but Boras made him wait.

I got this opportunity because a guy that I play baseball with at a small college in Iowa is from the same part of Florida, so they’re pretty good friends. Also, when he called my bud (ya he called not the other way around. I picked his phone up when it started ringing and it said Eric Hosmer on the caller ID. It was extremely exciting) my friend (who’s not black) says “what up Hos!” and Eric Hosmer replies “Gary! What up nigga!!” So apparently our friend Mr. Hosmer believes that he is black. But that is fine as long as he puts up numbers like other famous black 1b such as the crime dog. Anywho, he is coming to visit in the spring when he is at Burlington, and I am pysched.

Interesting story - I don't get Boras and making a kid wait for 2 months to get started

Boras held out the contract until after the deadline. What is the point when the kid was “always gonna sign?” Did Boras get any more money by holding out until 11:59 than he would have 5 minutes earlier?

I sure hope that Grant Green – SS from USC doesn’t hire Boras as an agent. He is a guy I’ eager to follow in spring of 09. Scouting report from Cape Cod League in BA said a “cross between Tulo and Longoria.” Put him in the infield with Moustakas 3B, Johnny G 2b and Hosmer at 1B and that is a good looking group!

and it has been for 20+years now. Wait until the last possible second, it has worked for him many many times so you can’t really fault it.
