Royals Confidence Index

Rci_medium

There hasn’t been a Royals Confidence Index (RCI) since June.  I guess that’s probably since there hasn’t been much of any confidence since June.  But I made up for that with a new snazzy logo!  There may not be much reason to measure the confidence of Royals fans in the 2008 team with only a month left, but if they can play out the string, so can we.  The good news is that in the next RCI the questions will be about the 2009 team.  The last RCI was 5.56.  Feeling better about the team now?  Yeah, I know.

Here's the deal.  For each of these questions, give me a number from 1-10.  1 means you feel very bad/unhappy/negative about the item in question right now.  10 means you feel extremely good/happy/positive about it.  (If you want to use decimals like 6.5, feel free).

1. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals team overall?

2. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals pitching?

3. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals hitting?

4. How do you feel about the 2008 Royals defense?

5. How do you feel about Dayton Moore?

6. How do you feel about Trey Hillman?

7. How do you feel about the Royals minor league system?

8. How do you feel about the Royals future?

Bonus questions (these have no bearing on the RCI):

A.     Which positions do you think should be the Royals top three priorities for offseason acquisitions.  (Please rank the top priority #1, the second #2 and the third #3).

1.

2.

3.

B.    How many plate appearances do you think Kila Kaaihue will have with the KC Royals in 2008?

C.    How many plate appearances do you think Kaaihue will have with the KC Royals in 2009?

D.    What is the percentage chance that Eric Hosmer’s contract gets voided?  (0-100%)

First

And the 1st RCI I’ve participated in this season…

1 – 5.5
2 – 6.8
3 – 4.2
4 – 7.3
5 – 8.0
6 – 7.0
7 – 8.3
8 – 7.2

a – 1 – Starting Pitching 2 – 1B 3 – Starting Pitching

Allow me to quantify that w/o starting a big discussion. I considered Middle Infield, but Callaso is showing enough at this point to not bother w/ a guy like O-Dog IMO. I think by the time we are able to contend, a guy like Dunn and or Burrell will not be contributing enough to justify a big contract signing this offseason. I settled on 1B, hoping to find some power for that position, assuming GMDM has given up on Butler @ 1B (though I haven’t). I would like to take a flyer on a Juan Rivera type as a corner OF possibility. I’d look at Garland & Oliver Perez as top priorities…

b – 0

c – 250

d – 0

yea

I think signing a couple of the younger FA SP’s to shore up the rotation (bye bye Davies & Ducky) will still contribute in 2-4 years when this team may win something. Signing a 30 or so year old hitter that may not be the case.

Like I said, my first inclination was SP, MI, 1B, but Callaspo has shown me enought to get a season long tryout next year at 2B & Aviles has shown me enough for the same thing @ SS.

by GoBabies!! on Aug 31, 2008 11:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If we go into NEXT year

with a rotation of…

Meche
Greinke
Garland
Perez
Hochevar

I’d be very happy…

The other reason I put SP on there twice though, is I think there is more than a 50% chance Greinke will get dealt this offseason (just a hunch)

by GoBabies!! on Aug 31, 2008 11:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't see Greinke leaving

but I also think Bannister could still have a spot in a 5 man rotation.

by Warden11 on Aug 31, 2008 11:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree

based on his last 2 or 3 starts, not on the 12-15 that preceded those. Will the real BB please stand up?

by GoBabies!! on Aug 31, 2008 11:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Garland and Perez really are free agent landmines, as Gopherballs has shown in detail

Their peripherals and histories are scary. They are going to be expensive (not CC, AJ or Sheets expensive, but still expensive) and likely to underperform expectations.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 1, 2008 12:01 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is a valid opinion

But when I posted Meche’s #‘s from the 3 years prior to being signed by KC, they weren’t a hell of a lot better.

The only thing about Garland that scares me, as I’ve pointed out is his worsening K:BB ratio. I have not done any real research whatsoever on Perez

by GoBabies!! on Sep 1, 2008 12:21 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Meche

He was younger and Garland is now, so he had more peak years ahead of him, and the K’s are hugely important. And a big part of Garland’s effectiveness is inducing groundballs and the Royals don’t have a particularly good IF defense, so I really don’t think he’s a good fit.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 1, 2008 12:49 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

One more thing on Meche

The fact that the Meche signing has paid off very well, doesn’t mean the Royals should offer big contracts to every pitcher with a statistical profile like him. He was worth the money the Royals offered him because of what Moore and the Royals scouts saw in him. They saw a guy with the stuff and improvable control to have a breakout. I doubt they see that in Garland. I sure don’t.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 1, 2008 1:00 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Garland doesn't seem like DMGM's kind of guy, anyway

Not that I’m an expert on Moore, but iirc (sorry, late at night I turn into another internet shorthand barbarian), Garland doesn’t strike that many guys out, unlike, say Meche.

Yeah, Moore traded for Banny, but got him for next to nothing. That’s alright. And Garland is better than Bannister, but not enough to pay what it’s going to take to get him.

The Royals are in a position where they should pass up two Garlands in order to get a corner outfielder who can OPS .900 or so.

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

Also

why would KC get 2 SP with BB and Rosa as probables next year.

Because

We dont have a lot of emergency options.. see starting a 5-11 AAA pitcher this year. This is also a good way to have some trade power when we do get some of our young arms closer to the big leauges, will give us the ability to deal Grinke if the right trade comes along. Also will allow us to retain Soria as a closer.

Omaha could use some more pitchers.

I suck at this`

I started out, long ago, as a “call Aviles up NOW!” guy, then got convinced that his AAA numbers just reflected repeating a level, so last time we did one of these, I totally lowballed his final OPS. I always overthink this, which is idiotic, considering this is a gauge of my “feelings” rather t han objective analysis. Oh well, I’ve been trying to project the Royals win total for next year in my usual half-asse fashion, and posting that woudl be much more embarassing than this.

Bonus questions (these have no bearing on the RCI):

A. Which positions do you think should be the Royals top three priorities for offseason acquisitions. (Please rank the top priority #1, the second #2 and the third #3).

1. OF
2. SP
3. HC (Hitting Coach). I know, I know…coaches at the big league level have very little impact on players’ performance, etc. I’d be the first to agree that Ross Gload isn’t going to start hitting 25 HRs a year with a better hitting coach. But I feel that with the lack of significant development from our young hitters (probably the single biggest factor in the team’s failure to improve) plus our overall track record of atrocious approaches to hitting, there is simply no justification for bringing Mike Barnett back.
4. Jettisoning unproductive players who have been plugged into the lineup way, way too often this year (I’m talking to you Gload, Teahen, Gathright and Pena). Let’s face it- the Royals need better hitters at most positions. They do have several in-house candidates who might fill a number of positions; depending on who they decide will be their 2B, SS 1B, DH, C, etc. However, it’s imperative that they find out as much as they can this month about guys like Kila Kaaihue, Callaspo, and friends. Once they decide who stays and who goes, they need to go get some hitters (almost regardless of position) to fill out the lineup. I can’t take this year’s lineup any more…it’s been absolutely awful.

B. How many plate appearances do you think Kila Kaaihue will have with the KC Royals in 2008? Zero

 C. How many plate appearances do you think Kaaihue will have with the KC Royals in 2009? 200

5.) 7
6.) 5
7.) 8
7.) 7

Biggest Needs:
1.) Corner OF’s – Both corners
2.) Middle Infielder with experience and solid D
3.) Mid Rotation Innings Eater

Kila Kiahue becomes the Royals starting 1B in September and never lets go. 600+ PA for 2008 and 2009. This effectively fills 1B, otherwise that is also on my offseason shopping list as well if he’s not ready.

Eric Hosmer’s contract will stand.

I goofed

unless Kila is our only batter for the Royals the rest of the season (which may actually be an improvement) is the only way he reaches 600 PA, so probably a more realistic 50 to 150 PA’s for best guess.

RCI assessment

1. 2 (given very little improvement, if any, in their record)
2. 5
3. 1
4. 3
5. 5 (choice of manager losing confidence; draft picks and minor league good;
stocking of bullpen with arms – good; trades this year – nothing)
6. 3 (failed in almost all his publicly stated goals – defense, manufacturing runs,
improvement in fundamentals, communication with players, motivating
the players to be competitive, establishing a winning "culture")
7. 7
8. 5 (next year more of the same unless we sign another outfielder that hits better
than Teahen, a 1st baseman, and another arm in the bullpen) …… (I have more
hope for 3 yrs down the road)

BONUS
A. #1 – Outfield (Teahen has had enough opportunity; we may need two outfielders if
Guillen doesn’t begin to grow up; hitting is still the teams major
                                      weakness)
        #2 – 1st base (Butler’s defense still isn’t adequate esp. given the team’s overall
defense and we need more offense than Gload has provided)
#3 – Starting Pitcher (Although we could use another experienced power arm in
the bullpen, we don’t really have a surplus of starters like
we thought we had last year. Meche and Grienke are
steady, Hochevar and Davies need continued improvement
to keep their jobs, and Bannister should be gone if he
                                                  doesn’t return to 2007 form)

B. ZERO plate appearances for Kaaihue, according to the media reports for 2008

C. I hope he gets at least 100 plate appearances in 2009 to show mgt. if he has
        what it takes.

D. Hosner’s contract won’t get voided – 0%

E. Biggest problem with the Royals in 2008 – they haven’t played competitively or
up to their potential as individuals or as a team

1.Center Fielder – Royals need a fast centerfielder that can hold thier own at the plate, so they can move DDJ to a corner OF postion and have a lot better defense.

3. Starting Pitcher – Our starting pitching is thin right now, I think that Cortez will not be ready next year, and we need to make sure that we have options in case starters go down or do not perform

B. How many plate appearances do you think Kila Kaaihue will have with the KC Royals in 2008?

C. How many plate appearances do you think Kaaihue will have with the KC Royals in 2009?
300 (May callup when Royals decide Shealy is not the answer)

D. What is the percentage chance that Eric Hosmer’s contract gets voided? (0-100)
3 – Since the players association, Royals, Hosmer and Boras don’t want it voided, I think that they will overpower the Pirates lashing out against the Royals, right or wrong.

Oh, the woe

1. 2 (positive on Meche, DDJ, RamRam, Soria, Greinke and Mahay—that’s just above 20%).

2. 6 (nearly everything that’s gone well for this team this year has been about the pitching, but Luke’s baptism by fire and the wheels falling off the Banny bus have hurt).

3. 1 (DDJ took the next step, Aviles can hopefully show up for season 2, Billy may be figuring things out, that Gordon kid’s got, uh, some potential, and, umm…..KILA NOW!)

4. 4 (still just too many silly mistakes)

5. 9 (in Dayton we still trust!)

6. 5 (looks like that “getting ready for 181-games” thing didn’t quite take, but he gets some slack for having to work with what he has)

7. 4 (2 more drafts like this one and this number should at least double)

8. 6 (boy, I’d like Gordon and Butler to start dominating soon, but 2012 is looking pretty nice right now).

A.
1: OF/1B (a big bat or 2—I can see getting rid of Guillen for the sake of doing that and seeing if Teahen has value as a 3B on the trade market),
2: SP (Greinke, Meche, Hoch, Rosa, and [insert FA here]),
3: I don’t know—while our talent may not be great, I wouldn’t mind letting 2009 be the year 2008 could not have been due to too many vets still being attached, a la Gruds, Gload—let the young guys play. I don’t have a problem with giving Aviles/Callaspo a real shot at the middle IF, letting Buck manage the staff for 1 more year, giving Shealy/Kila a chance to prove up at 1B, get Billy used to exclusively seeing “D” and “H” after his name so that he can simply work on raking, letting Maier see if he can at least hit one double as the 4th outfielder. There’s spots to fill—I cut bait with Gload, Gathright, Pena, and German, Olivo’s gone, Guillen and Teahen could go as well. We should probably fill those spots.

B. 11

C. 30 if 2008 was a fluke, 150 if it wasn’t

D. While Hosmer, KC, Boras, and the MLBPA don’t want it voided, MLB can be jerks, and this is a case where they’d love to stick it to Boras, so I’m going as high as 45%.

Sometimes you just gotta roll the potato.

I have never been this disappointed in the team

I am disappointed enough that I have strongly questioned my fanhood in recent weeks. I have had nightmares about this team, literally. I strongly feel this team will never contend.

2. Corner outfielder with power
3. Quality #2 or #3 starting pitcher

Most of all, just NO MORE of the following “players”: Martha Teahen, John Suck, Ross LOAD, Toilet Paper, Jr., Kip Wells, Jose Guillen, Yaz Yabuta….. This team needs a major overhaul. But we’ll never contend with this group, anyway.

I have been out of town and put that in before I realized

that he had been called up. I am surprised with that development, frankly. But, if I could change it, I would say around 35 at bats sounds about right. Besides, players being brought up and not played has happened before with this club (see Huber, Justin).
