A Series of Unfortunate Events

I've been reading, and watching, and pondering the fallout from yesterday's little fracas with some level of detached bemusement.  A lot of things have been said, and very few of them actually make any sense.  Some of them got covered in the post-mortem thread, but let's try and break this down piece-by-piece.

Star-divide

First, let's cover the main point of contention from His Craziness, Ozzie Guillen.  Guillen was furious that his pitcher got the thumb without any warning having been issued.  I'm going to be fair to Ozzie and agree that this was probably a bit harsh.  The problem here is, there should have already been a warning issued.  Carrasco had already nearly decapitated Olivo twice.  Bill James once argued convincingly that umpires should have the authority to run a guy just for being dangerously wild; his point was that it's not a punitive measure, but a safety measure.  Gary Cederstrom should have pointed at Carrasco after the pitch which wasn't a HBP but could have been and said "That's it, one more and you're gone."  His failure to do so directly contributed to the situation.  I understand that doing so would have been somewhat extraordinary, but it's the umpire's responsibility to both recognize a potential threat and to protect the players on the field where possible.  I do not for the life of me comprehend how, after already having thrown two pitches in the vicinity of a batter's head, an umpire could not at least consider the possibility the pitcher's gunning for him.  It is beyond all rational belief.

Cederstrom, for his part, exacerbated this situation post-game by apologizing to Guillen.  He apologized for the wrong thing, however; he should have apologized for not issuing the warning a pitch earlier, not for running Carrasco without the issuance of a warning.  Of course, even then, this misses the point; Carrasco took a swing at Olivo while he was being held.  Never mind that it was a embarrassing and ineffective swipe; it was enough justification to get ejected regardless of his intent with the pitch.

Guillen then went on to argue that there's no way he would have instructed a pitcher to throw at a guy with the bases loaded, and the talking heads parroted this line as if it were the true gospel of Alexander Cartwright himself.  The talking heads neglected to consider one thing, that being that Guillen was being mendacious in saying it:  the game was essentially already over at this point.  Giving up another run?  Big deal.  Does anyone really believe that Ozzie's not crazy enough to give up a run deliberately when the game's already lost just to get a little revenge?  In fact, is there really anyone who in retrospect doesn't think that's the perfect time for Ozzie to headhunt someone and then look innocent and claim he wouldn't do it in that situation?  Everyone knows Ozzie is an insane genius, but this thought never occurred to the experts employed by the Worldwide Leader?

Yes, perhaps it's true; perhaps Carrasco was just wild.  I know that when I see a pitcher who's lost control, it's completely common to see them basically hit the exact same spot with three straight pitches.  Please.  Greg Maddux would have had a hard time throwing those three consecutive pitches with such superrnaturally consistent accuracy.

And then we have John Kruk, whining like a wounded boar about how unfair it is that good teams can't retaliate in these situations while "last place" teams have nothing to lose.  John, perhaps you want to rethink that (as well as taking a look at the standings, which you, being an expert, should be presumed to be familiar with before going on the air).  Considering what the Royals have done to the White Sox over the last two weeks, it's arguable which one of these two teams is the "good team" anyway, but that's neither here nor there.  The "good team" in your eyes is not the team that was prevented from retaliating.  To "retaliate" is to "requite or make return for a wrong or injury with the like."  Was Kruk really suggesting that, in the wake of the Royals retaliating for Carrasco's "lack of control", the White Sox should then have been allowed to retaliate right back simply because they're in a pennant race?  What asinine logic.

Oh, and John?  I like how you completely missed the distinction between Zack Greinke laying a pitch into the well-padded ass of Nick Swisher vs. DJ Carrasco aiming at Miguel Olivo's head.  Well played.

Obviously, I'm biased in this, being a Royals fan and considering the White Sox to be an organization roughly equivalent to E. coli.  But all this requires is some rational thought.  I just wish the national media were more capable of same as we basement-dwelling nobodies without journalism degrees.

It is unfair

Maybe the White Sox can lose a few more games and fall out of contention so they can retaliate against us.

I would've settled for Olivo

giving Carrasco or Pierzynski a fistful of noogies, Nolan Ryan style, but watching Carrasco pretend to take a swing at Olivo was hilarious.

John Kruk is an idiot.

And when these two teams play again next week, it will be very interesting to see how the Sox pitchers act. Too bad Yorvit Torrealba doesn’t play for the Sox, or else I’m sure RamRam would be more than happy to take up the cause for the Royals.

Olivo should have

left the attacking to drunks in the stands bashing the Sox’s first base coach. That’s the way a top team properly retaliates.

I am very glad that Zack did retaliate. That is the first time I’ve ever seen some balls from that guy. That I can remember. Maybe ZG is starting to grow up!?

What was JoGui doing playing peacemaker yesterday? Doesn’t he normally love stirring things up? Why would he go take AJ out of the fight. AJ is hated by the Royals and we’d all love to take a shot on him. (We being everyone from this blog) It may be clear, when bullies are faced with tough situations, they run or fold. And JoGui folded yesterday. He should have gone in there throwing haymakers. Maybe he would have pulled a groin muscle?

I’d be scared of Miguel Olivo. That guy could be the strongest guy in the clubhouse.

I agree with the statement that OzGui was going after Olivo. Ex-ChiSox, catcher, toughest guy on the field. Perfect target for a bases loaded jam. Not to mention Dotel lit him up the series before and he mouthed off the AJ and Dotel. Maybe OzGui didn’t call the pitch, maybe it was the guy behind the plate? AJ? Yes, Pierzinski is now the perfect genius and Oz Gui is just a little whiner baby….. Hmmm…..

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what the ChiSox do next time we play them… do they go after our CF like we went after theirs in what they see as a bad retaliation? This just adds fuel to our distane of the ChiSox.

Maybe we owe Olivo an apology for hoping he’d be traded…. He stood up for his franchise in the heat of battle.

I'm pretty sure Olivo's charging...

the mound had nothing to do with standing up for the franchise. He was pissed because HE was being thrown at.

Maybe he has split personality?

Happy Josie. He’s a clown, a great guy, and your best friend.

Down in the Dumps Jose. The booing hurts his feeling. Kansas City is a living hell.

MAD JOSE! JOSE BREAK THINGS! JOSE NOT RESPECT CLUBHOUSE!

This would also explain why one Jose personality could leak to Enrique Rojas that he wants out of KC, while the other Jose personality could plausibly deny he wants out!

Think about it!

but he’s a Royal so it stands that he is sticking up for the Royals because he is one… I know he was mad that HE got hit, but now that ZG retaliated FOR him, he is more apt to stand up for the team….

i think greinke has been known as the only royals pitcher who does retaliate for some time

i remember an article from his rookie year about how he was willing to do it, so yesterday was nothing new.

thats kinda surprising

he looks like he would get crushed in a fight.

Unless Zack knows Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I don't think it matters

Dude is weighin like a buck 60 so unless he is Ed Norton in fight club and likes to get hit he’ll probably crumble like a piece of paper.

One might get the impression you've never been

in a brawl in the parking lot of a bar. Trust me, I’ve seen scrawny-looking 5’6” clowns be the last guy standing while 6’4” Bubbas are laying on the ground moaning. Wiry guys fight dirty.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

Oh I've been in a few fights some

I would like to remember and some I would like to forget. That reminds me of a fight my buddy was in. We were in a bar in Ames, IA(ISU) my friend was the 126 pounder on the wrestling team. This huge dude bumps into our other friend, the wrestler tells the big guy to apologize the big guy tells him to screw off. Wrestler asks him to go outside big guy agrees. They go out back within two seconds my buddy the wrestler takes his legs out from under him gets on top of him and pounds his face into a bloody mess. It was hilarious.

Loved it

I’ve been in Vegas all weekend and got to see the brawl in Ceasers Palace sportsbook. There were guys with White Sox hats around and me and my buddies cheered like crazy during the highlights of it. Here is my take:

1. I don’t give a crap if it was intentional or not, 3 pitches high and tight, Olivo had every right to run out there.
2. I’m just glad A.J got hit with a punch out there.
3. My favorite part of everything was Zack nailing Swisher in the hip with a fastball. That was beautiful, Zack just stared at him on the mound with this little smirk on his face.

As if I didn’t hate the White Sox enough, here we go some more. 6 more games against these guys, things could be interesting.

And by the way, 2 of 3 from the Red Sox and who is going to start getting overly optimistic for next year? I know I will!

It's great to see some fight in the Royals

I was worried we wouldn’t see anything positive from the second half, they have me impressed.

Great series

They opened a can of whoop ass on the White Sox both literally and figuratively. Just Sat and Sunday alone, they scored 25 runs, which makes for a great weekend of baseball. They knocked Chicago out of first place, always a great thing. The glass is definitely half full, when it comes to optimism for next year.
