Around SBN: Upon Further Review: Bo Knows Longreads

Mike Sweeney said he hopes to sign with another club today after he clears waivers. The designated hitter, let go Tuesday, said his agents are hopeful that there will be interest, though there are just two weeks left in the season.

"Hopefully, I'll pack up again and go to a contender - or I'll go watch the sunset on the beach with my wife and kids," Sweeney said.

The designated hitter/first baseman said the A's, who needed a roster spot, gave him the option of taking his release or going on the 60-day disabled list, so he could continue to be paid.

"My response was, 'I'm not hurt,' " Sweeney said. "I know it might be better financially, but I couldn't look my teammates in the eyes and do that."

Sign him Dayton!

I hear we have two scrubs trying to play first base. We need a backup in case Gload goes down.

Yeah

that’ why I posted this. Although I was never a Sweeney hater or anything close, I feel like I didn’t really appreciate him when he was around. Predictably, all the talk about how he was “too nice” of a guy in the locker room, as opposed to Jose Guillen’s “fire,” made me rethink it (especially since Sweeney’s corpse was leading JoGui in VORP for most of the year, until fairly recently when JoGui went on his mediocre-lefty fueled hot streak). Aside from the fact that, over their careers, Sweeney, despite all the injuries, was a far superior hitter, that just boggles the mind. I mean, look, the “locker room” stuff is not all that important to me. I’d rather have a jerk with a 119 OPS+ and bad defense than a nice guy with a 100 OPS+ and bad defense at a slightly more important defensive position. But don’t turn a guy being a jerk into him being somehow superior and a “better guy for the team” into a good guy who is an important figure in the community — Especially when the “fire” somehow is supposed to make up for the fact that Mr. Burns (pun!111) is statistically far inferior player for their careers.

Oh, yeah

the main reason I posted this wasn’t that he still wants to play — it’s that he was willing to turn down the chance to stay on the payroll as not fair. It may not be purely motivated by respect for his teammates, but I bet there aren’t that many players who would do something like that.

I hope he lets the dream die

It’s great that he loves baseball and wants to keep playing. But his body gave up being able to play baseball for a significant stretch of time years ago. There was really no reason for him to come back this year. I hope he just ends it, retires and goes and spends time with his family. I love Sweeney. But this is starting to look desperate and sad, like one of those professional athletes who lives only for his sport and can’t let it go even after it has let him go.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Yeah

But I guess I’m one of those cheesy people who thinks that atheletes have to decide for themselves. It’s the GMs of baseball who will finally “let Sweeney know” that it’s time to retire by not offering him something he will take.

This is embarrassing, but I can’t remember if they do the “one-day contract to retire on team X” thing in baseball. Do they?

we could do it for the last two weeks.

Then he could retire a Royal.

He was a great hitter. He took what was given and took advantage. I bet if we signed him for next year at the minimum and played him every fifth day we’d get .333 and 40 RBI. That’s about 32 games. We could also use him to be a PH once a day.

Sweeney would have more value on our roster than TPJ and Jason Smith.

The problem is that Sweeney has made it clear that he doesn't want to just retire

He wants to sign a deal to go somewhere and play. He’s not looking for a way to retire as a Royal. He’s looking for a way to get playing time. And then he’s looking for some team who will pay him $450K next year to be on a major league roster.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 15, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know

I just think it would be cool if (hopefully) he doesn’t get any bites next spring, if he could do the facade contract thing, that’s all. I certainly don’t think the Royals should sign him to any sort of real contract.

If he doesn’t figure it out, teams will figure it out for him. It worked for Bernie Williams.

I think Bernie actually had offers

But I think his stance was “Yankees or bust”.

what a bastard

Probably an even bigger drag on the Yankees of the 90s than DDJ is on the Royals of the 000s.

Yeah.

In general, they’ll sign a guy a few days before the end of Spring Training, then release him as part of the final roster moves.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

Kinda sad....

I was one of those fans that was very frustrated with the Sweeney situation the past few years. However, when he left it just felt weird. I mean, it was time for him to go, but it still was weird to not have him in a Royals uniform, let alone see him in another one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see back in a Royals uni one of these days….as a coach.

No way

The Royals don’t need his milk-and-cookies, nice guy crap ruining their perfectly put together clubhouse chemistry.

I suggested that he become a hitting coach for the Royals last offseason

Either the MLB hitting coach, or a minor league hitting coach or instructor. He was a very good hitter, with good plate discipline, and he’s a great clubhouse presence. He gets along with everyone and even was learning Spanish last year so he could talk to the Latin American players.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I look forward

To SportsCenter continually covering the “Will Mike Sweeney retire or won’t he” saga this offseason.

If you’re familiar with baseball statistics, you’re probably having great difficulty swallowing the above numbers. If not, call your dad and ask him whether a .422 batting average is good. The reality is as follows:

Since 1941, when Ted Williams hit .406, no player has hit .400 or higher (achieved a base hit in 40% or more of his at-bats). Except for Mike Sweeney, who has done so twice.

“Tony, tonight we saw yet another amazing performance out of Mike. Do you feel that he’s being overlooked by the public?”

"Hell yes, I do. I mean, look at the guy. He might hit .400 this year. And all you guys care about is that clownshit Rodriguez getting his uniform dirty to make a catch that he has to take three steps for -

…I’m sorry. I’m not talking about you guys. You’re local guys, you’re here, you know how good Mike is. But the media outside of this city doesn’t care. A .400 hitter out of Kansas City isn’t exactly on Major League Baseball’s agenda, you know?"

“Are you suggesting that there is a conspiracy working against your players?”

“Yes! Yes I am! Mike has busted his ass for, what, five years now. He’s already one of the best players ever to step on the diamond. But the media doesn’t give a rat’s ass. They think they know what America wants to see, they think they want a bunch of drugged-up overrated shitheads who give each other hugs when one of them breaks a record. They think they want to hear about a team full of overpaid pussies winning World Series rings and getting paid more in one year than I will in my whole life. Baseball used to be about the underdog and the idea that playing your best would always guarantee you a shot at the big time. It’s not that way anymore, and that cocksucker Jeter gets more fame than Mike will ever get because he wears a uniform that my players would jump off a cliff before wearing, and I’m goddamned sick of it, and baseball is in a sorry state, and it’s the media’s fault, and Stuart Scott can go fuck himself.”

“Is this a response to his allegation that you were ‘Muser’ than the other side of the pillow?”

[laughter throughout the room]

“You know what? We’re through. This is over.”
