I hope Dutton gets to the bottom of this
And airs out alllll the filthy details in tomorrow’s Star. It’s been way too long since our last player/Hillman bitchfight…oh wait.
Dutton never gets to the bottom of anything
The KC Star sports writers don’t do investigative journalism. If the organization doesn’t want something to come out, it won’t come out. Dutton, Mellinger and co. don’t rock the boat.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

He must be T-Bones won the Northern League
It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.
Unfortunately, they'll do exactly as much hard-hitting stuff as Kaegel
Zero.

I don't really see investigative journalism as a requisite for sports writing
Perhaps I am underselling the position a bit, but even still, I don’t think the KC Star is behind their peers on this one.
But to compare Dutton or Mellinger to Kaegel is laughable - that guy is a mouthpiece for the organization.
This space intentionally left blank.
Agreed
On the other hand, Mellinger did call the Guillen signing “great” and asked where the Royals woud be without him.
Well, they might have won one less game, and they’d be $36 million richer, and able to sign 2 free agent hitters next season, instead of one.

I don’t really see investigative journalism as a requisite for sports writing
It is a requisite for good sports journalism. In short you can either just report what the organization gives you or try to find out what is really going on. The KC Star does only the former and none of the latter.
Perhaps I am underselling the position a bit, but even still, I don’t think the KC Star is behind their peers on this one.
No, I think they are just as bad as their peers on this one. Beat writers almost always just go with the flow and work with the organization. They don’t dig. They don’t rock the boat.
But to compare Dutton or Mellinger to Kaegel is laughable – that guy is a mouthpiece for the organization.
To imply that the journalism that any of those three men practice is anything other than being a mouthpiece for the organization is laughable.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

For comparison's sake
Here is Mellinger’s article on the how the Royals short- and long-term chances of contention are viewed inside and outside of he organization (contains photo of Dayton Moore looking about 55).
There there is his blog about the HIllman-Guillen “sickness” mystery.

Interesting blog entry
“Well, in the last few weeks, maybe longer, Hillman has been a different guy. As Poz wrote in the column linked above, he’s been closer to the star manager with enormous potential that Dayton Moore saw and loved and hired in Japan.”
Good to hear. Wonder what spurred the change. Perhaps Pos calling him out in his column?
If we can dump Guillen this winter, and maybe shake up this roster a bit, perhaps Trey can win a second chance to win back this clubhouse. I’d like to see it happen.

The problem
Trey left the wrong brand of chocolates by JoGui’s locker. And JoGui likes roses, but NOT yellow roses. Dammit Trey, it’s been almost 6 months, if you don’t know him by now…

Why the heck didn't Hillman just say that?
This is all because Dayton gave in to fan pressure and called Kila up…

Hosey had been too quiet?
Seems like Hillman is kicking a sleeping dog. Not sure why he felt the need to generate a drama when Guillen is apparently content to cover whatever happened. If you are going to handle it “in house” then do so. Otherwise, you’re just grandstanding.
I expect that Guillen will be back next year, so we might as well come to grips with that now. I know you guys aren’t into counting stats, but 20+HRs and 100 RBI do mean something. And both are something the Royals haven’t had in years. If they were out there and willing to come to the Royals, Moore would have spent more than the 12M he gave Guillen to get them here.
My bad
By that 20/100 standard, he’s a poor man’s (well, a poor man with $36 million burning a hole in his pocket) 2004 Tony Batista.
Here’s another counting stat for you on Jose’s indispensability. Through sheer effort and grit, he is more than half as valuable as Mark Grudzelaniak this yaer, in only 215 more plate appearances!

Looks like this "big spat" is about as big as the last one
Guillen back in the lineup tonight, per the Royals website
DeJesus CF
Aviles SS
Guillen RF
Shealy 1B
Butler DH
Teahen 3B
Buck C
Callaspo 2B
German LF

I don't think that necessarily means
All is well.

No it doesn't necessarily mean that
The benching also doesn’t necessarily mean that there is a huge problem in the clubhouse which is tearing this team apart. Rumors are fun. They snowball because they are interesting. They feed on themselves. Many fans don’t like Guillen, so they are eager to believe that he is always causing big problems and destroying the team.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

to be fair
Although there aren’t specifics on what they are, the “special treatment” stuff does come from people like Mellinger whom you earlier characterized as never putting out anything the organization doesn’t want to get out. Posnanski has also made comments about this, I believe.
that doesn’t mean he’s “destroying the clubhouse,” but it does seem that there are people within the organization — not just the fans — who see Guillen as getting away with stuff others wouldn’t.

Sure, I buy that
So it appears that some people don’t like Guillen getting special treatment. Is that a problem? Is it a big problem? Is it even significant? I’ve had jobs where I and others thought that some favorites of the boss got special treatment. We didn’t like it, but it didn’t tear the organization apart. It didn’t keep us from doing out jobs well.
There is some dissatisfaction in every major league clubhouse. I see a lot of fans assuming that Guillen is a major source of dissension, distraction and more that is hurting the team. I just don’t see the evidence of that. Guillen’s $12M salary, .740 OPS and poor defense is hurting the team. The rest is much ado about the kind of pointless bullshit that fans love to obsess over.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 18, 2008 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I mostly agree
and you’re right (elsewhere), I’ve been harping on this a bit lately. Performance/salary are the main problems and dwarf the other. I do think that there is some reason to be frustrated by Guillen’s special treatment, but I’ve been beating the Guillen train into the ground lately, so maybe another time?
In short, my concern is that a bad clubhouse environment in general (whoever is responsible) might make it harder to extend the younger players, and that the word getting out might also make is harder to sign free agents in the future. But I did say I would drop it for now…
So I’m dropping it.
Now.
For real.
