Game 153 Open Thread - Mariners (57-94) at Royals (68-84)

Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals, Sep 18, 2008 2:10 PM EDT

The Royals go for the sweep this afternoon against the Mariners, and couldn't have a more favorable pitching matchup with which to do so.

It's Greinke (3.73 ERA) versus Fieierabend (5.79 ERA) with near total dominance of Wyoming on the line.

Seriously, if the Royals sweep Seattle

Would they also have Colorado, in addition to Wyoming? After all, the Royals did sweep the Rockies in June.

Go Greinke, pump up that trade value!

And if he’s going to be traded, don’t shut him down after this. Get this counting stats up as high as possible.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Sell high!

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 18, 2008 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm confused on what to cheer for

If he isn’t going to resign, then I want them to leave him out there for 138 pitches or so (just don’t get him hurt).

If they are going to try to resign him, pull him now. No, wait, better yet, start Teahen at third, german at 2nd, and Butler at first. Make sure Hoagy is playing the field. More runs that way. Let him get smoked.

Then pull lhim early, shut him down. Then the next day start the negotiations.

re-signing

it’s not so much that he won’t re-sign, i think. It’s more that we need dramatic improvements on offense and selling a hot player on a high might be the best way to retool the O for next season… i bet Zack would re-sign if we gave him a reasonable offer.

by CollininCalifornia on Sep 18, 2008 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We really don't know what he would consider a "reasonable offer"

We also don’t know that he’d rather re-sign than test the FA market where he could likely get more money.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 18, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think he's only arbitration eligable right now

he’s not a true free agent for another year or two (or three?)… the Royals retain the rights to him, but have to offer him arbitration — just like Beltran in his last year… ended up making $9 Million. He has no leverage right now… but will in a few more years.

by CollininCalifornia on Sep 18, 2008 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm talking about a long-term extension

I assumed that is what we were all talking about

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

What else could "Giving Greinke an extension" possibly mean?

by devil_fingers on Sep 18, 2008 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see your point

Arbitration may produce a lower salary than what he is really worth. Could we re-sign for lower than market value and then trade him? Kind of like flipping houses eh?

-You play to win the game - Herm Edwards

by truebluetradition on Sep 18, 2008 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

trading zack

just the fact that he’s still only an arbitration guy makes him extremely valuable to a big market team (or the Royals for that matter) b/c they can lock him up long-term for under market value (see Kazmir with the Rays) The talk about Zack, prior to this trade talk, was that the Royals should sign him to a 3 year deal with 3 more years of options… that would keep him with the Royals well in to his free-agency years

So trading him to a team like Boston would net a HUGE return b/c they have the chance to get a premium starter for a long time. (b/c they’d have the same chance we have to lock him up)

by CollininCalifornia on Sep 18, 2008 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I was thinking

If they locked him into a lower than market value deal now, his trade value should be even greater

Like Soria, who, if he isn’t going to be tried in the rotation, should be shipped off ASAP for good, young hitters

by devil_fingers on Sep 18, 2008 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea......maybe

I really do think Soria should be tried in the rotation as well. He simply has too many tools to keep at a closer. Although, that position is very important and something that Royals lacked for a few years prior to getting him

-You play to win the game - Herm Edwards

by truebluetradition on Sep 18, 2008 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah...

i guess your theory is good, i just assume trade him and let the other team worry about making the long term deal… make it their problem instead of doing all the work for them.

by CollininCalifornia on Sep 18, 2008 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Royals should definitely work on a long-term deal with him

As long as the deal doesn’t include too much risk, it increases his market value. That way, the Royals could either keep him or trade him, whether they extend him or not.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Lots of options

And I haven’t dug through the top prospects of every possible team who might be interested in him (there are many possibilities). But I would think the Red Sox for two of Lowrie/Anderson/Buckholz plus a one or two other decent prospects/players. Yankees for Hughes, Jackson and another good prospect. Texas for Davis, Ramirez, Hurley and another prospect. That’s just off the top of my head. Each of those deals could stand some tweaking.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 18, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think that's enough from the Yankees

Heck, I’m not sure they have a third prospect good enough.

Hughes has injujry issues. As much as I like DDJ, Austin Jackson looks (from what little I can see) like that is his upside, with a rich man’s Melky being the downside.

I know you’re just speculating. It’s just that I’ve been thinking about the Yanks, too, and can’t see how it will happen right for the Royals.

Now, Joba + Jackson + another prospect might peek my interest.

I'm not

speaking to this situation in particular…

But when pitchers less thatn 2 decades ago were pitching for 25+ years of 250-300 innings w/o the medical advancements, and now they struggle to get 200 IP it speaks to the general sisification of the position.

Granted, the problem stems from childhood. 30 years ago, kids were outside every day from May-October, playing catch, or doing SOMETHING outside, building up the arm muscles. Now, with technology advances, they pitch & throw @ practice, & are on the couch or in front of the computer much more. It saddens me, becuase even if there was someone whose arm was able to pitch 300 innings, the team would be called abusive if they allow him to do it (see Halladay, Roy)

by GoBabies!! on Sep 18, 2008 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt that

If a pitcher were able to throw 33 complete games without ever breaking 110 pitches, nobody would say a word about him racking up 297 innings.

The bigger issue, really, is that a pitcher only GETS 33 or 34 starts, whereas 2 decades ago they got 40-41. That’s 40-50 innings lost right there.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
