Royals Fandom > Metallica Fandom
In the first few paragraphs of my column regarding Metallica's new album, I make reference to Royals fandom. I figured some people here might be able to appreciate the sentiments.

Far be it from me to take a shot at someone cool enough to write for Something Awful
But even if they had stopped in 1988, Metallica is the most overrated metal band ever.
Although Hammettt might be the most likable (least unlikable?) member of the group, he’s the most laughable player ever to be considered a “guitar god.” Naturally, Rolling Stone rated him about 50-60 spots above Eddie Van Halen recently. OK, so Rolling Stone is a far bigger piece of shit than Metallica (and almost as bad as R.E.M.), so what would you expect? I think Bonnie Riatt made it into the top 12 or so.
French toast, please.

I liked both REM and Metallica once.
Both bands have taken similar paths. Not everything gets better with age. Somethings just lose their nuts. And once they’re gone, it’s very hard to put them back.

Metallica is the most overrated metal band ever...
…but that’s mostly because most decent modern metal bands (Neurosis, Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me, Cult of Luna, Isis, etc., etc.) aren’t rated at all. I look at it this way: Metallica is like Derek Jeter, who is known to casual fans as baseball’s one and only shortstop. People who actually follow the game know Hanley Ramirez (I’ll make him Slayer) is far superior.

I'm not much of a metal guy
On Hanley and Jeter: It depends on how you look at it. They’re both “marginal” (generous) defensive SSs. Jeter’s 1999 is the best season either of them has had, although Hanley’s 2008 and 2007 are better than any other Jeter offesnive season (I’m using OPS+ here, it’s just easier — Jeter in his best years was probably a slightly better OBP guy, Hanley has more power, but OBP is more valuble than SLG, and as recently as 2006 Jeter busted out a .417 ). Clearly, Ramirez is clearly far superior the last couple years, as one wold expect given their respective ages. I don’t think it’s crazy to think Hanley will end up with the better career. At the moment, though, I’m going to say that, considered as a whole, Jeter’s still the “greater” player historically just for the numbers of seaons of outstanding offensive production from an SS. Let’s check back in 5 years though — if Ramirez keeps this up and sticks at SS, he’s the greatest hitting since, well, A-Rod.

Shit, that was supposed to be the end
I was writing about metal: I’m not much of a metal guy, anymore. I’m old. I was into Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and stuff. SO I’m no expert. I don’ t know much or anything about the band other than Metallica and Slayer you mention. Personally, I prefer Megadeth to either of those bands for the superior musicianship and arrangements. Mustaine can be a dork, but is also a funnier interview (when he’s on) than any of the guys in the other bands (not counting unintentional comedy — Ulrich and Hetfield are way ahead of the curve). Slayer gets points for not being as pretentious as Metallica, and having two of the few famous guitar players who definitely show a heavy K. K. Downing influence.
Jeter if overrated, but he has never out and out sucked, even in his worst offensive years.

I am a bad person
because I actually liked Load, Reload, and S&M. I know this, because I have been told this on many occasions.

Not understanding the Metallica hate here at RR
Not at all.
They haven’t exactly lost thatmuch prominence since their heyday.
The only difference, I believe, is that they wait forever in between album recordings. They still sell out arenas and have a devout, loyal following….ok, mostly among truckers and 50-something Harley drivers, but that’s a fairly significant group size.
I think Metallica are every bit of the talent they have ever been. And although I’m not exactly an ‘80s, pre-grunge metal follower, I’ll give them props where props are due. They are an excellent and supremely talented rock band, and enormously influential at that.

I just threw up in my mouth a little...
The only Metallica worth listening to, came before the black album.
I’m a 35 year old metal fan. Todays music ain’t got the same soul. Not much out there to get excited about. The latest Down album was pretty good I guess….and Machine-Head’s last album was not bad, provided you can overlook the liberal overtones. Megadeth and Slayer both had successful new albums…haven’t heard much from the new Testament yet….But I’m sick of cookie monster vocals in all the new metal…Todays music scene just sucks.

Metallica Sucks

My Friends And
I were into playing older hard rock and early metal, but we never thought any of it was particularly great misically, juast fun to do. Metallica was a bad joke to us. I didn’t realize until recently that people actually took them seriously. I found a CD of theirs, probably belongs tho one of our 30ish mechanics, and played it just out of curiosity. It sounded quaint.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Try listening to Pantera - "Vulger Display of Power" album.
Then tell me it’s quaint….You will “grow a bigger set of balls” listening to it.

Yup, that is a classic
Embarrassing to know I was really into that — seeing Pantera in OKC right before they got huge.
It is a bit quaint, though. Still 10 times better than anythign Metallica ever did. Sanctified by death in the memories of metalheads everywhere, though.
