Game 156 Open Thread - White Sox (84-68) at Royals (69-84)

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals, Sep 19, 2008 8:10 PM EDT

The Royals go for eight straight behind Brian Bannister (5.77 ERA) tonight at the K. Bannister has posted a 3.55 ERA at home this season, which is remarkable because nearly all of his other splits are terrible: 7.20 ERA in July, 7.76 in August, 5.94 in September, etc. etc.

The White Sox counter with Mark Buehrle (3.85 ERA). I am excited about not having to spell Buehrle again this season.

I'll be in NYC tonight for a bachelor party weekend.  (So much for that second post on Grass Creek, etc.) Have fun without me. All three game threads are ready to go...

I know the real reason behind your “weekend.” You don’t want to have to admit the success of the surge in the middle of a heated election campaign where you’re trying to cater to voters who want us to withdraw our forces from Wyoming. You can’t fool me.

The real questions for...

…tonight’s game are these: How many runs will Banny give up, and by what inning?

My vote is 7 runs in 5 innings. … And I hope I’m wrong. …Oh, and we win the game 9-7 in 9 innings because our stellar bullpen gives us the pschological confidence to come back after Banny’s pulled. – TL

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Sep 19, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He has been unlucky this year

.308 BABIP this year, and .311 BABIP the last 365 days. .327 BABIP this year against lefties. I’m starting to think that, this year, he overthinks his pitches and this has led to a disastrous result this season.

Bannister is clearly an MLB starting pitcher. Negate his high BABIP and his ERA is about 5….an acceptable #4 and an above average #5.

by Royals Nation on Sep 19, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Nonetheless, I agree with slayor

That Bannister doesn’t possess an ‘out’ pitch. It also frustrates me to no end how he has sacrificed more strikeouts for more walks. He is not the type of pitcher that can go deep in counts.

by Royals Nation on Sep 19, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, not having that out pitch will definitely hurt him if he's not on top of his game.

But, when he’s decent he has the ability to get 5 innings. Then, you have to lean on the bullpen.

by Warden11 on Sep 19, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

as much as babip can tell us....

when you dont have any good pitches, hitters are going to hit them hard more often.
