Francoeur rumors remain, I like this line mlbtraderumors.com

Another potential factor favoring Francoeur in KC: though the right fielder has never managed to walk a lot in the big leagues (.312 OBP), the Royals don’t seem to value walks at all, anyway.

I’d only be interested if all they had to give up was Bannister

It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.

by kcscoliny on Sep 20, 2008 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

I wonder why people assume that Moore doesn't value walks

Because TPJ and Guillen don’t draw walks? TPJ was brought in for his defense and Guillen was one of few second tier OF options out there. He also acquired Callaspo the OBP machine. I don’t know that he’s done enough on the offensive side to have a reputation yet. Certainly the performance of guys who were here before he got here doesn’t say much about what he values.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I guess I know that Shealy is hot

But aren’t the Royals really depending on Butler next year, at least?

If Dayton wants to showcase him for another go at Yuniesky Betancourt, seems like now is the time…

The Royals can't afford to let him go

He might hit 60 HRs next year.

dude is so unpredictable from season to season (in all cateogries) I have not idea what to expect. One year he’s hitting ofr power. THe next he just gets on base with very little power. Now he’s not getting on base, but he’s got twice as many home runs.

Maybe he’s his own grandfather:

Also, one of the best stories in Moneyball
The scouts were already sharing their favorite Swisher stories. The Indians’ GM, Mark Shapiro, goes to see Swisher play, and instead of sticking to his assigned role of intimidated young player under inspection by the big league big shot, Swisher marches right up to Shapiro and says, “So what the hell’s up with Finley’s old lady?” (Chuck Finley is an Indians pitcher who filed assault charges against his wife.) Great story! The kid has an attitude.

you let him go hit 40 homers in Omaha and sell him high to someone who wants him. Win-win.

If he has a .900+ OPS in Omaha on July 1 and hasn’t yet been called up to be the everyday (or almost everyday) 1B/DH for the Royals, I’m going to hunt down Dayton Moore and slash both of his achilles tendons.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, I guess there are exceptions to every threat

And if Shealy has an OPS over .900 on July 1 next year in near-regular playing time, I’ll walk around Harlem ass naked at high noon on the Fourth of July.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it's important to rememebr there is no book out on him in the majors

I’m sure in AA and AAA they were all trying to pitch him the same way, up here I doubt there is any specified approach to “get him out”. Maybe I’m wrong and their advance scouting really is that good. I think if he started every game for the rest of the season we’d get a better idea

realistically speaking

by slayor on Sep 20, 2008 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

realistically speaking

by slayor on Sep 20, 2008 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

I have a Kyle Davies question (two actually)

He’s got really good stuff. So, 1) why is he not getting more K’s for the Royals this season, and 2) how is he being so successful without the K’s?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

1) pitch selection
2) luck

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Sep 20, 2008 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Question

He’s not getting K’s because of the pitches he’s choosing to throw? Does this mean you think he’s trying to pitch to contact?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

He's my problem with that

If he were effective at inducing weak contact, shouldn’t his LD% be low? Actually, it is very high.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He hasn't been doing it all season

Just 5 innings of this start, his last start, and 3 innings of his start before that

Hmmmm

I don’t know if he’s been inducing a lot of weak line drives. I’m hesitant to say that his LD% is deceptive.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

he's been a totally different pitcher this start and his last start

compared to the rest of the season….go check out the pitch f/x data

he’s not throwing the slider neearly as much, fastball has gained velocity, he’s throwing 2 different curveballs for strikes

realistically speaking

by slayor on Sep 20, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Luck

I’m saying, he’s actually pitching well now.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it has - can he maintain it?

I don’t know. But if you go look at the pitch f/x gameday data for this start, and his last start compared to his previous starts + video, you will see a totally different pitcher.

realistically speaking

by slayor on Sep 20, 2008 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not.

I’m not offering an absolute answer here. I just think that may be a component of his luck, is all.

And, of course, he’s been effective precisely DUE to luck.

The pitch selection thing, I think is more that he was using his out pitch early, rather than setting it up. Now he’s attacking.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Sep 20, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't feel like I have any answers here

Just a lot of questions and concerns. I’m hoping it isn’t all luck. Most of the peripherals look pretty bad. Or, pretty good for a #5 SP.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

What you both said.

I hope he’s glommed onto something. If he’s capable of pitching the way he’s pitched his last 17 innings, he’s no longer a #5.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Sep 20, 2008 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be refreshing and surprising

He’s still my leading contender for next year’s Andy Sisco Award, though.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I want to add, this is the best stretch in Davies career

Easily, there is NO question about it. Nothing even remotely CLOSE to what he’s been doing in these last few games. Up until last start, he had started ONE GAME in 3 years that he had not allowed a walk in, and he got bombed in that game. This is the absolute, hands down, bar none he has ever pitched in the major leagues.

realistically speaking

by slayor on Sep 20, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

More stats that make it look like he hasn't been inducing weak contact

GB% 37.9% (that’s very low)
IF FB% 9% (that’s pretty low)

And then the line drives are at 22.1% which is quite high. I don’t see it.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

So, we the Royals put Greinke back in the bullpen and signed K-Rod

that means they could get outscored by 100 runs next year and still win the division?

That is the sound of the 25 year old Davies pitching to his potential. God that sounds good. Hopefully Banni can hear it too and step up his game.
