So, remember how earlier in the year we were saying Greinke could outhit TPJ?
The Reds just pinch hit pitcher Micah Owings for SS Paul Janish. True story.

Oh, and he hit a 2 out 2 run single off CC Sabathia to give the reds the lead

Francoeur rumors remain, I like this line mlbtraderumors.com
Another potential factor favoring Francoeur in KC: though the right fielder has never managed to walk a lot in the big leagues (.312 OBP), the Royals don’t seem to value walks at all, anyway.
I’d only be interested if all they had to give up was Bannister
It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.
I wonder why people assume that Moore doesn't value walks
Because TPJ and Guillen don’t draw walks? TPJ was brought in for his defense and Guillen was one of few second tier OF options out there. He also acquired Callaspo the OBP machine. I don’t know that he’s done enough on the offensive side to have a reputation yet. Certainly the performance of guys who were here before he got here doesn’t say much about what he values.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Can someone explain to me why the hell Butler isn't in the game?

yah, he is our right fielder for next year
Go Royals!
I guess I know that Shealy is hot
But aren’t the Royals really depending on Butler next year, at least?

Mark Teahen = Mark Teasin'?
realistically speaking
The Royals can't afford to let him go
He might hit 60 HRs next year.
dude is so unpredictable from season to season (in all cateogries) I have not idea what to expect. One year he’s hitting ofr power. THe next he just gets on base with very little power. Now he’s not getting on base, but he’s got twice as many home runs.
Maybe he’s his own grandfather:

Go Royals!
Also, one of the best stories in Moneyball
The scouts were already sharing their favorite Swisher stories. The Indians’ GM, Mark Shapiro, goes to see Swisher play, and instead of sticking to his assigned role of intimidated young player under inspection by the big league big shot, Swisher marches right up to Shapiro and says, “So what the hell’s up with Finley’s old lady?” (Chuck Finley is an Indians pitcher who filed assault charges against his wife.) Great story! The kid has an attitude.

Since when does Kyle Davies throw 94
He’s been up that high in his last couple starts, rest of year 89-92 tops. Where’d he find the juice end of season?
realistically speaking
he remembered that he was 24 and not 32, and zing 2 more mph but it goes down 4 mph in the 4th-5th
Go Royals!
It's funny, 2MPH extra doesn't sound like that much
But when you’re Davies, behind 3-1 in the count, have to lay one right down the pipe, that extra 2mph can be the difference between a line drive and a late weak fly ball

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Floyd is a house of cards
His ERA looks good and his record looks good because of his run support, but it is very flukey. His FIP is very Kyle Davies-like.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

…but from our scouting eyes, does it look like Kila is ready for the majors at this point? My amateur scouting opinion is no.

I dunno.
Of course, even if he’s “ready” I want him to start in Omaha next year, but he doesn’t seem overmatched. Just not “awesome.”
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
He doesn't seem entirely overmatched
But he does seem like he’s not yet ready to handle major league pitching.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I'll say this much
I don’t want him in KC unless he’s going to play, no matter what. He’s got too much raw talent to sit on the bench.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Agreed, he needs to be playing almost everyday somewhere
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions
If you're management and you don't want him playing
you let him go hit 40 homers in Omaha and sell him high to someone who wants him. Win-win.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
If he has a .900+ OPS in Omaha on July 1 and hasn’t yet been called up to be the everyday (or almost everyday) 1B/DH for the Royals, I’m going to hunt down Dayton Moore and slash both of his achilles tendons.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Well, it's important to rememebr there is no book out on him in the majors
I’m sure in AA and AAA they were all trying to pitch him the same way, up here I doubt there is any specified approach to “get him out”. Maybe I’m wrong and their advance scouting really is that good. I think if he started every game for the rest of the season we’d get a better idea
realistically speaking
And if the pitchers don't know how to pitch him, shouldn't he be hitting better?
It seems that the fact that they don’t have a book on him would be in his favor.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions
He's beating himself on some pitches, and just missing the ones to hit
Also seems a little prone to expand the zone vertically from what I’ve seen, which is what, 12 AB’s?

Kyle Davies, 15 batters, 10 first pitch strikes
whoaaaaaaaaaa
realistically speaking
I have a Kyle Davies question (two actually)
He’s got really good stuff. So, 1) why is he not getting more K’s for the Royals this season, and 2) how is he being so successful without the K’s?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
Question
He’s not getting K’s because of the pitches he’s choosing to throw? Does this mean you think he’s trying to pitch to contact?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions
He's my problem with that
If he were effective at inducing weak contact, shouldn’t his LD% be low? Actually, it is very high.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
He hasn't been doing it all season
Just 5 innings of this start, his last start, and 3 innings of his start before that
For the majority of this season his curveball has been nonexistent / worthless
realistically speaking
just threw a 3-2 changeup to swisher on the black after being ahead 0-2
That’s how you induce weak contact….
realistically speaking
Hmmmm
I don’t know if he’s been inducing a lot of weak line drives. I’m hesitant to say that his LD% is deceptive.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions
he's been a totally different pitcher this start and his last start
compared to the rest of the season….go check out the pitch f/x data
he’s not throwing the slider neearly as much, fastball has gained velocity, he’s throwing 2 different curveballs for strikes
realistically speaking
Ok, but how did he manage to be effective in the other starts?
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Luck
I’m saying, he’s actually pitching well now.
realistically speaking
Ok
I hope something has really changed which will be meaningful going forward.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, it has - can he maintain it?
I don’t know. But if you go look at the pitch f/x gameday data for this start, and his last start compared to his previous starts + video, you will see a totally different pitcher.
realistically speaking
It's not.
I’m not offering an absolute answer here. I just think that may be a component of his luck, is all.
And, of course, he’s been effective precisely DUE to luck.
The pitch selection thing, I think is more that he was using his out pitch early, rather than setting it up. Now he’s attacking.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
I don't feel like I have any answers here
Just a lot of questions and concerns. I’m hoping it isn’t all luck. Most of the peripherals look pretty bad. Or, pretty good for a #5 SP.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions
What you both said.
I hope he’s glommed onto something. If he’s capable of pitching the way he’s pitched his last 17 innings, he’s no longer a #5.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
That would be refreshing and surprising
He’s still my leading contender for next year’s Andy Sisco Award, though.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 20, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I want to add, this is the best stretch in Davies career
Easily, there is NO question about it. Nothing even remotely CLOSE to what he’s been doing in these last few games. Up until last start, he had started ONE GAME in 3 years that he had not allowed a walk in, and he got bombed in that game. This is the absolute, hands down, bar none he has ever pitched in the major leagues.
realistically speaking
More stats that make it look like he hasn't been inducing weak contact
GB% 37.9% (that’s very low)
IF FB% 9% (that’s pretty low)
And then the line drives are at 22.1% which is quite high. I don’t see it.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Not Olivo
It’s a lefty, the Royals are up… he’s going to hit it about 550 feet. Followed by a 4 year extension.

Wow
Swisher was safe, but Hawk’s not even whining about it. “Play that close, really can’t argue.”
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Swish doesn't play the right way

Hawk is a homer, but when it's a tough call for the umpires he's usually pretty fair
He’s a reasonable guy.
realistically speaking
So, you're saying he only whines
when the play’s OBVIOUSLY wrong, or the play’s OBVIOUSLY right? ;)
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
why doesn't the original post make it?

The world is unfair
And my search didn’t include the word “rumour”? I dunno.
But I’ll fix it by cloning http://www.billybutler.com/ to make Sweepy a website.
That would pretty much be the greatest thing ever
Did you guys order a customized “McBroomerton” Royals jersey yet?

Speaking of shirts
I realize he was messing with the rookies, but there needs to be some sort of Brett “I shit my pants all the time” t-shirt…

lol
I’ll check with Minda about that, but I’m pretty sure she’s never again doing business with the place where she got her Banny jersey. Or rather, the place that eventually allowed her to give them lots of money for the product she actually wanted.
Can't you just get stuff like that from the Royals' website?
An O-Royals shirt would be even better

Late to the party here, because I was AT the game
but YES YES YES on the McBroomerton shirts! I’d be honored.
Well, my wife would kill me for spending that money
but I hope you or someone does it and takes a picture…

I couldn't justify getting a JERSEY,
but a t-shirt is probably do-able…if I ever get paid. (ahhh, writing. how NOT to have money)

I’m on Gameday, but I’m pretty sure that’s the first time this season that I’ve “seen” Soria walk someone.

just leave your pet at home for the weekend and you’ll know what I mean.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Man, I'm really out of it
I thought he hadn’t pitched since before the Seattle series.
Last time I left my pet at home he died. That was about 4 weeks ago.

I thought I read somewhere in the archives that you had 73
Maybe I"m mixing that up with Rany. You might have had 72-76.

Is the team still +3 vs. Pythag after this game?

Probably
Makes sense too, as teams with good bullpens usually outperform their Pythag.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

So, we the Royals put Greinke back in the bullpen and signed K-Rod
that means they could get outscored by 100 runs next year and still win the division?
:P

Does everyone hear that?
That is the sound of the 25 year old Davies pitching to his potential. God that sounds good. Hopefully Banni can hear it too and step up his game.
It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.
