Hardcore Fan Test

In an idle moment, I decided to put together a test to see how hardcore of a fan you are.  This is designed to be a generic test, which can be used for your favorite teams of any sport (although it takes some tweaking for college sports).  I want to be clear that this test is for entertainment purposes only.  It isn’t intended to truly show who “real” fans are or to rank people; it's just for fun.  So if you feel like it, take the test and report your score for the Royals and/or any other of your favorite teams.

Star-divide

1.      How often do you watch/listen to/follow online gamecasts of  your favorite team’s games?

a.      Just about every game that I don’t actually go to (15 pts)

b.      Around ¾ of their games (10 pts)

c.      About ½ of their games (7 pts)

d.      Maybe ¼ of their games (5 pts)

e.      Rarely (1 pt)

f.        Never (0 pts)

2.      How often do you read about or vist internet sites about your favorite team?

a.      Multiple times a day (10 pts)

b.      Daily (8 pts)

c.      Semi-daily (6 pts)

d.      Weekly (4 pts)

e.      Monthly (2 pts)

f.        Rarely (1 pt)

g.      Never (0 pts)

3.      How often do you actually post something (article, comment, etc.) on an internet fan site or blog about your favorite team?

a.      Multiple times a day (10 pts)

b.      Daily (8 pts)

c.      Semi-daily (6 pts)

d.      Weekly (4 pts)

e.      Monthly (2 pts)

f.        Rarely (1 pt)

g.      Never (0 pts)

4.      How often do you yell or make similar loud, obnoxious noises while watching one of your favorite team’s games?

a.      3 or more times (5 pts)

b.      1-2 times (3 pts)

c.      Rarely (1 pt)

d.      Never (0 pts)

5.      Have you ever gotten into a heated argument with someone about your favorite team?

a.      Yes, often (5 pts)

b.      Yes, but rarely (3 pts)

c.      No, I control my feelings and don’t let it turn into a heated argument (1 pt)

d.      No, I’m an adult and wouldn’t argue about such things (0 pts)

6.      Do you have intense, negative feelings about one or more of your favorite team’s rivals?

a.      Yes, I hate them (5 pts)

b.      Yes, I don’t like them (3 pts)

c.      Not really.  Mild negative feelings maybe.  (1 pt)

d.      Rivalries are silly.  Can’t we all just enjoy a nice game? (-2 pts)

7.      Do you follow your favorite team’s draft (or recruiting for college teams)?

a.      Yes, I research prospective players and follow closely on draft day (signing deadline) (10 pts)

b.      Yes, pay attention on draft day and make sure I find out who my team drafted (5 pts)

c.      I try to read an article after the draft to see who my team picked up (2 pts)

d.      Not really (0 pts)

e.      Draft?  Is there a draft in here?  Somebody close the window (-2 pts)

8.      If your team trades a key player (or kicks a key player off the team for college teams), how long does it take you to find out?

a.      Within hours (10 pts)

b.      Same day (7 pts)

c.      The next day or two (3 pts)

d.      I’d probably eventually find out (1 pt)

e.      I really don’t pay much attention to individual players.  These are team sports after all. (-2 pts)

9.      How much apparel or merchandise do you own which has your favorite team’s logo or name on it?

a.      7 or more items (10 pts)

b.      5-6 items (8 pts)

d.      50% (3 pts)

e.      25% (1 pt)

f.        I told you it wasn’t about players; it’s about the team, man. (-2 pts)

11. Has your favorite team ever brought you to tears (either from joy, sorrow or both)?

a.      Many times (10 pts)

b.      Once or twice (5 pts)

c.      Never (0 pts)

12. If you had to choose between your team winning a championship or having “relations” with your favorite fantasy woman/man, which would you pick?

a.      Championship, baby! (10 pts)

b.      Gotta go with the hottie (0 pts)

Bonus Points

  • If you have ever named a pet after your team or a player or coach on your team, give yourself 5 points.
  • If you have ever named a child after your team or a player or coach on your team, give yourself 10 points.
  • If you
    • attend some games every year, give yourself 5 points
    • attend about ¼ of their games, give yourself 10 points
    • attend about ½ of their games, give yourself 15 points
    • attend about ¾ of their games, give yourself 20 points
    • attend every single game, give yourself 30 points
  • (you only get one, not cumulative points here)
  • Give yourself 10 points for every trip of more than 50 miles you have taken to see your team play anywhere in the most recent season.
  • Give yourself 3 points for every autograph of a current or former player or coach on your favorite team that you’ve ever gotten or purchased.

And now for the totals:

85 or higher – You’re not just hardcore, you’re obsessed.  Your devotion and intensity is admirable, but this may not be healthy.  It might not be a bad idea to talk to a mental health professional.

65-84 – You’re definitely a hardcore fan, but you still have a grasp on reality and some semblance of a real life.  It’s time for you to ignore those other things and focus more on your favorite team.  Sack up and take it to the next level.

30-64 – You’re a true fan, but you’re about as hardcore as the Jonas Brothers.  Sure you like this team and want them to win, but it’s time to go to more games, watch them on TV more and spend more time on the internet.  Being a hardcore fan involves a lot of focused sitting.  If your butt isn’t getting bigger and your eyes aren’t getting worse, you just don’t care enough.

0-29 – I’m not sure you’re really a fan of this team at all.  I guess you’d rather they win than lose, but if they won a championship, are you sure you’d even notice?

Here’s how I did:

Royals – 108

Chiefs – 59

K-State basketball – 78

K-State football - 64

Cubs – 15 + 10 + 10 + 3 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 10 + 2 + 3 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 10 = 103
Chiefs – 5 + 8 + 0 + 3 + 3 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 36
Bears – 15 + 8 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 5 +7 + 0 + 3 + 5 + 0 = 48
Mizzou basketball – 7 + 8 + 0 + 3 + 3 + 5 + 0 + 7 + 2 + 1 + 10 + 0 = 46
Mizzou football – 7 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 1 + 5 + 0 + 7 + 2 + 3 + 0 + 0 = 33

Suggestion: You should maybe amend question #2 to ask about visiting newspaper sites to read about your team.

Otherwise, great poll! Man, do I need to give up something. My big problem is following sports sites to keep up with stories on all 6. Then again, reading the Chicago Tribune and KC Star (aside from RR and BCB) give me a great deal information about them all. – TL

Thanks and that's a good idea

I made that edit. So the Cubs are your favorite team?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Only by a hair---for now.

I’m ashamed to reveal which question separated my scores! Let’s just say that 1908 is a longer drought than 1985. Actually, even though I scored higher for the Cubs, I’d say that the Royals are my true, first love. – TL

There should be something on there about digging into minor league games.

Or going to them just so you can see the future. Kind of like going to a HS game to see a kid that’s signed with your college team.

Hawkeyes 15+2+0+3+1+3+5+3+10+3+10+0=55

Not really shocked by the results. Brady’s injury has at least let me tone it down a bit.

Ya right

I wish it was only that long sometime. Unfortunately I was a fan during the Hugh Millen days. Back then actually seeing the Pats on TV consisted of seeing the Broncos play them.

by I need more Esteban on Sep 21, 2008 11:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Being from IA my team choices sucked

The first super bowl i watched was the ’85 superbowl. i liked the bears until Payton retired plus Andre Tippett (IA) was a stud for the Pats.

I really like Emmitt Smith and the Gator uniforms (kids stuff) then when Spurrier came I loved his offense. Plus I lived in Iowa but closer to Omaha than Iowa City so anytime you cheer for anyone other than Nebraska especially a Florida team people freak out. I always thought it was funny to poke at them. I never understood their hatred for Florida, I can understand FSU but not Florida the only time they ever played they crushed us.

I’ve been pretty lucky with the Gators the only time they really weren’t pretty good was when they were under suspension but the Pats on the other hand were bad for a long time with a couple decent years mixed in until the Krafts took over. They IMO are the best ownership group in the NFL.

Royals - 86

That’s the only team that really registers a score for me. Well, I watch or listen to most KU and MU football/basketball games, but the fact that I root for these rivals about equally is probably worth negative -90 points.

Actually

when I did this exercise, I followed the old purity test rule: “technicalities count.”

For instance, I consider checking my RSS feeds to be “visiting an internet site.” If I check a feed and there’s no news, and thus don’t actually go TO the site, that’s no different than going to the site to discover there is no news. The intent, on my part, is the same; I’m checking for news. Since I scan through all my RSS feeds a few times a day…

Honestly, that’s the only “time-consuming” part of the test, other than actually watching the games. ;)

Sarcasmâ„¢. It's the new gravy.

Bonus: 10 + 10 + exorbitant amount (I have received dozens upon dozens of autographs)

KU Basketball — 105 Points
Chiefs — 90 Points
Royals — 73 Points

Pretty accurate as to my actual fanhood. I love the Royals, but not nearly as much as the other three, as is noted.

Not counting the autograph question

I had a 99 for the Royals. You add in the autographed baseball of the ‘79 team (I’m not counting the one with “reproduced” signagtures of the ‘84 team—this one had everyone’s signature in REAL INK) and other personal ones as great as George Brett’s and as not great as Mike Kingery’s would push me into the 180 range. I don’t know if that’s really cool or really sad.

Sometimes you just gotta roll the potato.

Surprised I'm still married

I only did this for the Royals – but came up with a pre-bonus score of 99.

Thankfully, I don’t collect autographs, so that keeps my post-bonus score down.

If I get to count 14 different trips to the K to work (13 weekends + opening day), then post-bonus = 244.

If you exclude my working trips, and thus bonus for attending 1/2 the games, then post-bonus total is only 109 (one very enjoyable trip to STL with loyal2theroyals).

I’m such a baseball freak, I should really post something sometime about all the purely baseball vacations I’ve been on with another peanut vendor friend of mine. Two MAJOR trips with him entailing multiple cities/ballparks/halls of fame.

Those didn’t always set too well with loyal2smom – especially once we had two kids at home, so those trips abruptly stopped.

My results for the Royals would be pretty badly

skewed by the fact I can’t make the K easily. It’s my goal to make it down this April Break. I figure it’ll be good timing given A) I’ll REALLY want something to do that isn’t school by then and B) April’s a good time to go see a team play. Optimism abounds and all that.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

I was wondering about that

I scored pretty high, not super-duper, but high enough that I’m embarrassed. My fandom is, um, a subject I’d rather not discuss. If the airport MLB store in Jamaica had had a Royals “Respect Mon” shirt like they did for the other teams, though, I’d have that and a hat.

This is an interesting study in psychology

Those who score low seem to feel embarrassed for not having the devotion of others, while those who score high seem to be embarrassed by the amount of time they spend on sports. Both sides are understandable and suggest some balance in the posters: There are some really important issues out in the world, not to mention the simple idea of providing for one’s self/family, that no one likes admitting neglecting such things, but we do all the same. This is how professional sports has become such a capitally beneficient undertaking.

is the percentage of games, home games?

also in many ways the numbers will favor football. All home games is much easier for isu football than the royals.

anyways i got
102 royals
100 iowa state.

But i am a much much bigger royals fan. But as an isu student it is damn near impossible to not go to all the games, not know the players, and not travel to iowa city or lincoln every year for a road game to see friends.

p.s. i said no to the hottie for the royals, but bring on natalie portman over the clones.

At least Wally Joyner's not on the team....
