Announcing the Kila Ka'aihue PA Prediction Contest

Kila sits at seventeen plate appearances as a Royal this season.

2008 - Kila Ka`aihue 9 15 4 5 0 0 1 1 2 1 0 0 .333 .412 .533

Inspired by Hillman's September love of playing our precious Jose Guillen at DH, I've decided to pay a Huberian homage to the Punch, with the Royals Review Official Kila PA Prediction Contest.

This is what you shall do:

  1. Guess how many PAs Kila will end up with at season's end and post it below.
  2. Additionally, post your guess as to Kila's final OPS. This will be the tiebreaker.
  3. Guesses go on a first come-first-come basis. If you guess 20, you claim 20 and no one else can snag it. The tiebreakers are used if no one makes an exact guess.
  4. Entries close at 5 PM Central today.
  5. The winner shall recieve a Royals Review T-Shirt.

I'll take 22, if no one else will.

And .900.

Hence my decision to call it "screwing around" as opposed to "in-depth study."

I'll take 33

I don’t think he’ll get that many, but all the lower numbers were already taken.

this sucks. The only numbers left are 15(current) and a rediculous 38(never).

If he plays every game and gets 4 AB in each, that’ll be 24 more ABs on the year. Total of 39. Not giong to happen…. I’m sticking with 25 but because I have to guess a higher number I’ll go with 38. BOoOoooo.. Let’s go Trey. EVERY game he MUST start!

he only set that rule because he picked the best number

I Bob Barker’d him with a better OPS.

I figured I got hosed out of one tshirt already why not two.

I'm not guessing,

but I do want to post and say that his HR Saturday produced one of the goosebump moments of this season – not sure why it was THAT cool, but the crowd REALLY reacted to that one with a lot more enthusiasm than one would have thought. I suppose it represents hope for the future, and that always seems to touch people more than one might logically think it should.

by loyal2sdad on Sep 22, 2008 3:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think people also like minor league callups

even if they don’t necessarily “represent hope” (although I think Kila does). It’s fun to cheer a guy’s first big moment in the big leagues.

I’ve beat it into the ground, but one of my favorite baseball memories was a Yankee Stadium during interleague play, I think in 2002. The Dbacks were in town. It was my last game before I moved away from MYC, and we were in the cleachers. Randy Johnson was pitching. Juan Rivera was getting ready to make his first start in the majors, but got hurt in BP that afternoon, so they called up Marcus Thames that very day. He got there and was in the lineup. In his first MLB at-bat, he jacked the first pitch his saw (a 95-100 MPH heater from the Unit that was up around his chin) into the bullpen right in front of us. The place went nuts — -It was awesome. Even if the guido right behind me who kept talking about how often Shane Spencer got laid kneed me in the back super hard when we all jumped up.

cut the emotion stuff - use statistics (what is the 2-sigma on that OPS?)

You've got to get away from your calculator for a minute

Baseball isn’t played on a calculator, in a computer or a in a stat book. Baseball is played on the field. And if you’ve ever actually Kila play, you’d know that he’s not a great hitter. He’s the greatest hitter. Even if he doesn’t get 100 PA’s, he’ll still get 10 HR’s, because he’s that good.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 22, 2008 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the Magic 8 Ball says

that Kila will have 37 PA’s (and still get 10 HR’s) – don’t be afraid of using the scientific method.
