Game 157 Open Thread - Royals (70-86) at Tigers (71-83)

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers, Sep 22, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

The Royals invade Detroit for a three-game series, their penultimate matchup of the season. With fourth place on the line, the Royals send Gil Meche (4.08 ERA) to the mound for his 33rd start of the season. Hopefully, it will also be his last. Knowing the Royals however, I'm not so sure.

The Tigers counter with Zach/Zack Miner/Minor (4.16 ERA).

We'll see

I’m sure a lot of people assume that Moore doesn’t like unathletic players, so he might be interested in moving Butler. But he did acquire Guillen (who definitely isn’t very athletic) and Callaspo (who is much slower than I thought he’d be). So he clearly doesn’t love athletic, speedy guys above all else.

Selling low on Butler would be idiotic. Starting him in Omaha isn’t what I’d do, but it wouldn’t be catastrophic. But again, I’m going to wait until something happens before giving Moore credit or blame for it.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I think GMDM needs to just let him be

he said he is dedicated to working out in the offseason. That would be enough if he can get stronger some of those opposite field flyballs will start hitting walls or flying out. Longterm he will be fine I hope GMDM can see it that way. Too early to trade him

It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.

by kcscoliny on Sep 22, 2008 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And, really, who is going to fill in?

DMGM clearly doesn’t think Kila should start next year in the majors. Does he really think the team is better off with a Shealy/Gload 1B/DH combo? Or that Guillen would be the full-time DH? If Butler needs to start the year in AAA to get his swing together or whatever, that’s fine.

Anyone should be available for a good deal. I don’t think Butler will be after this season. Even with Kila looking good, I stil think Butler is by far the best option for either 1B or DH next year.

I hope that this is just a commitment to get Shealy as much PT as possible

Clearly the downside is Butler getting less playing time. Hopefully the bright side is they are seriously considering Shealy for next year. Would that mean Shealy instead of Gload? Or Shealy as Gload’s platoon partner? If they have both Shealy and Gload on the 25-man roster, I don’t know if that leaves room for Butler.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Sep 22, 2008 6:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ugh I would rather have one more year of Butler

as opposed to Shealy. I know Ryan has flashed some power in September but Butler has the bigger upside.

It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird.

by kcscoliny on Sep 22, 2008 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The good news

…is that even if Butler started in Omaha, he’d eventually get called up. And a Shealy/Gload platoon is an upgrade over Gload alone. I just wish they’d get rid of Gload and then Shealy and Butler could hold down 1B/DH until Kila is ready.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

+1 on corner guy

I go back and forth on Furcal.

I think Aviles will be around a few years. However, I think his range of possible OPSes next year is more like .725-.775, rather than .750-.800. I know he’s hitting well today, and I still love the guy. His defensive numbers seem to be good across the board this year. I just don’t see him being able to to any better than .725 against righties, and he’s doing barely better than that with his incredibly lucky BABIP… Still, at league minimum for the next 6 you can’t go wrong (KC should have a replacement by then, anyway)

Because the Royals contract with MLB says they get a bonus every time Soria gets a save

In reality, the only thing pumping up Soria’s save total gets the Royals is increasing his trade value. And if they aren’t going to trade him, who cares.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

The prevailing moronocracy at Royals Corner hates Teahen for playing well in September. Apparently he’s just teasing us when the games are unimportant, that evil sonofabitch. Release his ass now!

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Hey, if the players think it works,

and therefore keep playing like this, the announcers can talk about it all they want. I like this winning business.

P.S. AGREED.
