Sigh

Shealy & Butler is OK, I guess – at least he is sticking to his “no Gload” promise.

Very disappointed to see Callaspo is sitting. That’s quite a hitting streak he has going, including one game where he had to get a pinch-hit or lose it, and he came thru.

I know in the big picture hitting streaks are sorta meaningless – but I still think they are interesting.

Must win game for 4th place dreams.

by loyal2sdad on Sep 23, 2008 6:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes

No Callaspo is bizarre…he should clearly be playing, given the day off on Thursday. Hopefully, Pat Burrell will be occupying the LF slot next year, and not Mark Teabags.

I don't mind Hillman taking a precaution such as this

…..But find any alternative for Pena, PLEASE.

I’d a thousand times rather see Esteban German at second (with Mike Aviles). I’d rather see Jason Smith at shortstop or second, as well. For he can provide some isolated pop, unlike TP&J, who makes Zack Greinke from a terrific starter into a stupendous starter with his utterly Superhuman defense.

by Royals Nation on Sep 23, 2008 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Problem With

Putting TPJ in the pen is that he doesn’t hit well enough for a relief pitcher in the AL.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Quick question

How much does ending a season on a good note help next year. If it helps will it matter that we finished good if we blow up the team?

I'd 1000 times rather have Burrell this offseason

Use Aviles and Callaspo as they should be used….everyday players. Dump all of our offseason monopoly money on Burrell.

by slayor on Sep 23, 2008 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We need to actually spend money

….in an offseason, for once in almost two decades.

Offer almost all our money to Burrell. Would 4 Y/$60MM get it done? It would not be a good OF defensively, but let’s move the fences in. Might seem like a naive proposal, but I never thought moving them back out was a great idea, to begin with. It sounded like Baird & Co. was just trying to compensate for a horrific pitching staff (& horrific fly-ball pitching staff).

I’d rather fix a problem (corners) than mend something that isn’t a problem (2B & SS).

by Royals Nation on Sep 23, 2008 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anyone out there who has access to some of the "good" "run-scale" defensive metrics

I don’t want to cause a ruckus on the site. I know that Teahen has sucked at the plate this year. But looking at VORP and some other stuff, I’m just curious…

VORP and other metrics have Guillen about 10 offensive runs better on the year than our sweet Teabag… Yet everything else that slips through about JoGui is that his defense is Ibanez-level ugly. How big is the difference between them according to the different +/- systems? Might it be equal to, or greater than, the offensive difference?

by jonfmorse on Sep 23, 2008 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yikes!

Wasn’t Teahen good last year? Between him and Gordon, I’m beginning to think there’s something in the water this year.

Is that Dewan’s? I don’t understand it…. is it out, plays, runs?

In any case… I don’t want to get onto another “Guillen sucks” rant because, well, I hope everyone here already knows he sucks. It’s just interesting how much time we’ve talked about Teahen’s suckitude… when (unless I’m misreading the stats) they have had about equal “value” this year.

I’m not sure if this is a positive for anyone…

Anyway, thanks a lot, morse and babyblues… I’m finally go to spring for a BP sub., I just wish they had a better defensive stat (I’ve heard taht FRAA, etc. kinda blow compared to Dewans, UZR, etc.)

OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

by devil_fingers on Sep 23, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dewan's +/- is a zone play counting stat.

They divide the field up into zones, and determine where each ball was hit. Each zone has a % attached, and that % is “number of plays made overall in this zone.” Then they measure the number of plays a player makes in that zone, and +/- it. Lather rinse and repeat for each zone.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.

by jonfmorse on Sep 23, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I thought

its sounds like a cool way to do it. Not sure how to “meld” it with offensive performance, but that’s not their problem.

Isn’t this the one that has “over the head” zone? I can’t remember whether you said Aviles was good at it or not. I just thought it was funny… Billy Beane finding a market inefficiecy in 6 1/2 foot tall MIs…

They have Aviles as the best defensive player on the Royals, right? (Cf., Tallest Midget in the World)

Melding

Convert both offense and defense into runs created/runs saved. For Dewan’s system, 1 play = ~0.8 runs. Thus, Guillen would be about 7 runs worse than Teahen this year with the glove.

THT has a good Runs Created metric (which includes adjustments for park and leverage). VORP gets you most of the way there on offense (runs above replacement player), keeping in mind VORP undervalues walks, it is not park adjusted, and its positional adjustments are a little wonky.

by Gopherballs on Sep 23, 2008 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I get VORP OK,

but thanks. The Runs created I get, too….

But it’s sounding like, overall, Guillen and Teahen have had the same value this year. Not sure what to do with that info, but it’s really interesting.

Well, wait

I’m not “clued in” enough to critique stats.. VORP undervalues walks? I guess I’m surprised… definitely something to think about.

VORP

I forget the specifics but Tom Tango had an article awhile back on how VORP does not give appropriate weight to walks. I think the net result is not huge, maybe a few runs, but he had a good point that if BP is going to go through all of the trouble to make an advanced metric and then promote it as the real deal, they better at least get the metric right.
