And some people said there'd never be another 30-game winner

Should we have another...
…Banny performance prediction contest? Okay, good. Here’s mine:
3 runs in 6 innings with 5 SOs and 1 intentional walk. The tie breaker is hits allowed: I’ll say 8 (3 solo homeruns for the runs). – TL
I'll play
6 2/3 ip, 4 er, 7 h, 2 bb, 5 k
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Bannister's line for tonight
I am predicting another tank job by the Tigers so I am going on the high side for Bannister:
7IP 8 H, 3 ER, 2BB 8 Ks
It will fuel the winter discussion of whether Bannister can be a reliable starter for 09. Winter dreams of Davies and Bannister splitting 30 wins will keep us going until February.

What about...
…HRs? …I must have a pretty good sense of Banny’s performance for us to be so close. – TL
Some HR's are possible
Banny throws strikes, but there are some things which could help him in this game: No Sheffield. No Guillen. Is Cabrera playing? He might be out. Comerica is a huge park. It is hard to get anything out from left center to right center
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Sure, it's a...
…big park, but remember how good hitters (i.e. Manny in Boston) tee off on Banny. When they get it, they get it all. – TL
Thankfully Bannister has handled the Tigers pretty well this year
Small sample size, 2 starts, 15 ip, 2.40 era
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Most likely, this will decide 4th place
Considering if the Royals lose tonight, they would probably have to win 2 of 3 against Minnesota, and doing that would probably mean Minny is out and the makeup game against Detroit Monday won’t be played, so Detroit would have to lose 3 of 4 to TB while we win only 1 of 3 against Minny, then Det would probably have to get swept by TB – and TB may not have anything to play for after they clinch their division.
Win tonight, on the other hand, and then win only 1 of 3 in Minny, and that means Detroit would have to win 3 of 4 against TB, and that probably isn’t happening.
4th place dreams depend on matchup of two pitchers with ERAs around 6. Seems sorta appropriate.
Can't believe I am fired up about this game?
Is it the sign of a Royals fan that the battle for 4th place has more significance to me than the Sox/Twins?
It is the same version of checking the standings from the bottom to the top
to check and see how many teams are worse than the Royals. This September I have had to write them down. Most years it is a short list.
If the Royals close hard and the Reds/Rockies/Tigers fade,
KC could be end up with 10th or 11th lowest record. I haven’t seen that in a long time – 2003 and then before that – I’d have to check the records.

The joys we find...
…as Royals fans are a bit sickening, yes? …But seriously, that really would be nice—-to not be in the bottom 5 for once. – TL
What is the rotation for the last series?
Is it Davies, Meche and Greinke?
This is an...
…excellent question because we have to line everything up just right for the playoffs. …Wait…That’s my other team. ;) – TL
And your other team needs to line up a good physician for the playoffs

You're right.
…I can’t dispute that. Let’s hope the Cubbies don’t face that Diamonbacks pitching Hydra again. Wow is that a tough threesome. But I think the Cubs are not merely satisfied to be there this time around. – TL
If they bench Fukudome, they have a chance
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 24, 2008 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions
One week ago, I would have...
…agreed with you. But this week Fukudome’s shown signs of coming out of his second-half slump. I think it’s the rest—-err benching—-that helped him out. – TL
He's been in free fall since the third week in June
Each month is worse than the one before it and his second half has been abysmal. A few good days (and that’s all it has been) doesn’t change that. Three good games doesn’t signal a turn around. He’s beyond awful at this point.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 24, 2008 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions
But his OBP and...
…first-rate defense kept him in there. So, a warming up bat with those two things will likely get him the start in right for game 1 of the playoffs. He’s a player who makes contributions beyond the prominent numbers. – TL
His post-ASB OBP has been .316, and with no power. Is his defense so great that it makes up for BA/OBP/SLG which are well below replacement level?
OBP by month
July 306
Aug 293
Sept 289
Is 3 good games “warming up” or are they just 3 good games? Considering how awful he’s been for 3 months, I’d hesitate to say that 3 games show that he’s turned it around.
Think his defense and baserunning make up for his “prominent numbers”? In reality, he’s horrendous.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Hoping Banny can
just not suck tonight. I’d honestly settle for 5 or 6 innings, with 4 runs allowed. Royals have hit lefties well all year, so we should be able to do some damage against Robertson.
Rotation
I haven’t heard if they are gonna skip Ducky or not. Knowing Trey, it probably depends on outcome of division race – if that is still going come Saturday, then he probably skips Ducky. Otherwise, he doesn’t, and it will be Davies, Ducky, Meche. (or Davies, Meche, Ducky)
Looking forward to a lineup with Butler, Shealy and Olivo
I hope that Teahen is resting on the bench and Gordon bats lower in the lineup. Aviles will have his usual 2 – 3 hits and 1 run scored.
Tonight's lineup
DeJesus RF
German LF
Aviles 2B
Guillen DH
Shealy 1B
Gordon 3B
Buck C
Pena SS
Maier CF
Bannister P
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
What, no Gload?
…Is Trey managing tonight? Is he sick? Oh wait, I see: you can’t have Gload AND TPJ in there at the same time. That’ll actually create that black hole they feared Switzerland last week. – TL
Maybe this will help?

Read some rumors that Magglio Ordonez might not be back with Tigers
who might be looking to shed some salary. Would KC look a big bat/big salary guy like him for a couple of years to get them over the hump of 70s win season?
Give up talent to add an expensive, aging bat?
If we’re going to have to pay big money, I’d rather do that on a FA, instead of paying a lot of money for a couple decline years AND giving up talent in return.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 24, 2008 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats a good pitcher. Plus they wish doom on us and know that Maggs will fall apart next year.

How much salary would Tigers have to eat in order to have it be a good deal?
Or in other words, how much will KC offer to Pat Burrell?
The Tigers would have to eat a lot of money and take little talent in trade
I’m sure they aren’t interested in doing that. If they have to eat millions, then they are going to want something meaningful in trade. Ordonez might be worth it to some contending team who he could help get over the top. For some teams, 4 more wins is a big deal (the difference between 87 and 91 wins, for instance). For the Royals, it wouldn’t be very valuable (the difference between 78 and 82 wins).
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

In my prediction for tonight, I forgot to remember the end of the Matt Millen reign
in Detroit is over. He kind of reminded me of Allard Baird. At least Baird had the excuse of lack of cash. NFL is based on everyone being even so his record is that much worse.
Saw the good news that Hosmer was clear to play
in the instructional league. Thought his role in Alvarez situation was minimal but good that it is over. I think Moustakas and Hosmer are going to be really good in a hurry. They just seem to have that little bit of something extra!

Why is Brian Kenny employed by ESPN?
I mean, I know they like him for boxing, but he’s currently on Sportscenter telling Kurkjian that Webb shouldn’t win the Cy Young because wins shouldn’t count for much, and then in a later segment he mentioned win shares for for an MVP talk! Why would they hire someone to talk such trash?

Callaspo has done a good job in September.
Even though he doesn’t have any power, he puts the ball in play and has a high average. Has he won the 09 job at 2B?

per the uber-reliable WikiAnswers, here are the highest run totals
pre 1900: Boston Beaneaters 1220 runs in 1894
***This was the first year pitchers had to use a mound, as well as pitch from 60.5 feet away. The previous distance was 55.5 feet. Somewhere I’m sure a distant relative of Dr. James Andrews made a fortune.
