Were We Just Not Trying Hard Enough?
The Royals all got the message loud and clear from general manager Dayton Moore: Change is coming.
There was Moore’s public pronouncement Sept. 2 in The Star. And there was the more private meeting, shortly thereafter, in which he bluntly informed the players that (a) he was coming back; (b) manager Trey Hillman was coming back; and (c) not all of them were coming back.
Those paragraphs open a piece by Bob Dutton in today's Star. And it gets you wondering, given the timing of both the private meeting in question and the beginning of the team's recent tear.

The Royals were floundering, having stumbled along, sleepwalking as it were, through a 7-20 August and beginning September 4-4. Nothing was going right, and while it seemed that 100 losses was still off the table, the mid-90s were beckoning with the skeletal hand of the anthropomorphized version of Death Incarnate.
But suddenly, Dayton Moore steps into the clubhouse and informs the team that jobs are on the line -- and since then, virtually every member of this team has suddenly begun to Not Suck. Over the last fourteen days, the team OPS is .877. That's right, the TEAM. Let's look at the lineup over the last two weeks, by OPS:
C Buck: .406/.481/ .888
1B Shealy: .364/.620/ .984 (with 5 HR)
2B Callaspo: .436/.543/ .979 (.543 SLG? CALLASPO?)
3B Gordon: .391/.595/ .987
SS Aviles: .375/.566/ .941
LF Guillen: .370/.388/ .758
CF DeJesus: .500/.703/1.203
RF Teahen: .314/.429/ .742
DH Butler: .385/.458/ .843 (1.489 OPS over the last week)
Gathright: .750/.667/1.417 (only 8 PA)
Ka'aihue: .400/.538/ .938 (only 15 PA)
Maier has 24 PA with a .573 OPS. Olivo: 20 PA, .500; Pena: 13 PA, .558; German: 17 PA, .527. Gload has had 2 PA, and who cares.
Does this tell us anything? Well, small sample sizes hardly ever do, but I think we can at least tell who's decided to fight for their jobs, and who just doesn't give a damn. Guillen and Teahen have failed to step up. Of course, we're pretty much stuck with one of those unless Dayton finds a sucker. Everyone else in the starting lineup, though, grabbed their bootstraps and hauled. This streak has been a total team effort on the part of the offense (which, not coincidentally has scored a ridiculous 81 runs in two weeks).
On the mound, meanwhile, the staff has compiled a combined 2.31 ERA in the last fourteen days. That's just sick. Young Hiram has, of course, been a key to this, going 3-0 over that span, averaging exactly 7 IP per start, and coughing up all of 2 ER. Meche has provided 19 IP, going 3-0, 2.37, while Zack's gone 2-0, throwing 14 innings of shutout baseball. That's 1-1-2 performance right there. Duckworth went 1-1, 3.75, which isn't bad at all but doesn't matter in the scheme of things.
Bannister, on the other hand... well, he DID provide two wins, but that's 2-1 5.29 for our boy genius. He'll be around next year, but he needs to figure out what he's doing.
Soria's thrown five scoreless innings and picked up five saves. Ram-Ram's tossed 3.2 innings at 2.45. Nunez, 6 scoreless. Peralta's pitched in with two scoreless. Yabuta, 3.1 scoreless. Jimmy Gobble has provided four scoreless innings. Bale's tacked on another five.
Indeed, the only problems in the bullpen have been Wells and Lowery each throwing one inning and allowing 1 ER (9.00 ERA, but nothing to sweat over really), Robinson Tejeda allowing 2 ER in 1.2 IP, and... Mahay, whose three-run inning the other night sums up his contribution over the last two weeks. (He did have another 1/3 inning appearance last week, scoreless.)
I don't think we learn much from the pitching staff, except perhaps that Dayton's meeting had some impact on Davies. The relievers simply didn't get enough innings to determine whether they've stepped it up; any one of them could have had a balloonish ERA by coughing up a two-run homer.
“We should have been playing this way all year long,” pitcher Zack Greinke said. “We’ve just underachieved. I guess by the end of the year, the numbers aren’t terrible. But we expected more than this.”
Yeah, Zack... that's exactly right. With the screws put onto them, almost every member of this team stepped it up, which means they could have done better the entire season. (You, however, get a pass, my young friend, as you have done everything asked of you and more.)
Small sample size... doesn't mean much, but when the boss is looking to slice fat off the payroll in order to go all-in on the next set of building blocks, tanking the last two weeks of the season after being told the layoffs are coming? Bad plan. Teahen, Maier, Olivo, German... you've probably written your tickets out of here. Guillen's probably put himself on the trading block (if that's even possible). Butler's actually done well over the last two weeks, but in comparison with his own teammates he's not made a big impression, and may find himself as trade bait.
But Buck may have saved his job. Gathright certainly hasn't hurt his cause, although 8 PA isn't enough to put any weight on even if you're deliberately considering small sample size. In the pen, Gobble and Bale have asserted themselves, while Davies has probably earned his spot in next year's rotation, while Bannister's put himself at risk of a visit to Omaha.
But I don't see a big trade. The only real chips are true keepers: Grienke (Dayton's allegedly in the hunt for a starter as it is), Soria, and DeJesus. DeJesus isn't the chip he could be, either, because his injury situation severely decreases his value.
And now, we prepare for game 162, and a crucial off-season. It'll be interesting to see what Dayton does -- and whether the team's performance (good or bad) truly influences his decision-making. If Teahen's not wearing Royal Blue next year, you'll know the answer.
And on that note, after today's game, I bid you all adieu for a few days, as I load up the truck and move to... well, not Beverly Hills. Grapevine, TX, where I'll be forced to endure the Texas Rangers as my local team. It's okay; I've done it before, for almost 8 years. But, you know, the Royals were actually still very good then, so it wasn't quite so painful.

Does this tell us anything?
No and if the Royals front office is judging personnel by one month performances — whether September or April or spring training — then the future is bleak.

Every month tells us something
It tells us at least as much as August did (or July, or June, or…). What has happened both with the individual players and the team as a whole over the course of the year is more telling.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Good luck on your trip, morse, and be safe
Not sure what I think about this yet.
Be careful, get rest when you need it, and relax as much as you can. Moving is stressful, don’t make it worse than it is.

Good luck with the move
The moving process absolutely sucks. At least it will be over soon.

"At least is will be over soon???"
What the hell kind of loser attitude is that?
I think Dayton Moore needs to have a sit-down with you so that you will think about how you go about your posts.
Pick up your chair, NYRoyal.

Grapevine aye, My birth place. Its nice, you'll enjoy it.
I think this offseason is gunna be huge for Dayton, i think he is going to do some good things. I’d really hate to see Zack be traded, but obviously he is the best trading chip and could really bring back a haul.. I think i’ve grown to attached haha. But GMDM will do what is necessary and only if the deal is worth it. I trust him.

All about the (absence of) Gload
I think Dayton’s ultimatum is all well and good, but I think the real change was an acceptance of Hillman by the team, predicated on playing the best players, not the “veteran” or the preferred starter.
The month started with Olivo’s tantrum and subsequent increase in playing time. Gload sat the bench in favor of Shealy/Kaiahuie and Butler. The 1B postion suddenly was producing and Buck responded to Olivo’s promotion. And really, it doesn’t take that much to get a team going offensively.
This game is based on production. Players know who isn’t performing and if that guy is still in the lineup, they become comfortable with their own lesser production. When that guy gets replaced, they understand that the bar has been raised.
The only problem I see with your assessment of the players is Teahen. His performance over the last month was not inconsistent with what the rest of the team did. He’s not a starting COF; we shouldn’t put him there next year; he shouldn’t be paid like it. But, he’s a far better Gload than Gload (more power, plays third too, plus OF arm, better baserunner) and I think getting rid of him would be silly. I know Gload has a contract for next year, but his couple $M isn’t going to keep us from signing anyone else. Resign Teahen in a backup role.

Offseason changes
I’d like to see the Royals trade for a corner OF (Francoeur or Hermida come to mind) and sign an OF like Burrell or middle infielder like Hudson or Furcal. If resources (either cash or talent) are spent on improving the team, I’d rather see it go to the lineup than the rotation. Believe that KC’s pitching is solid. If Davies improve in September isn’t fool’s good in September, he’ll make a strong #3 behind Meche and Greinke. If Bannister could be packaged with a minor leaguer or tradeable piece like Teahen, Gathright, German or a reliever, he could possibly bring a hitter that is needed.
One area that must be improved is the bench – KC has got to have more pop than Gathright, TPJ, and Gload. German is passable but wouldn’t miss him if was gone.

You want KC to sign two corner OFs?
Francoeur and Hermida…that would assume that either Guillen or DDJ becomes your 4th outfielder. Guillen is way to expensive to be a 4th OFer, and DDJ is too good.
Davies probably won’t become a #3 starter. Remember, he got his shit tossed on a pretty regular basis last year. He has probably turned a small corner, but he has also gotten quite lucky. Best case scenario, he’s a serviceable #4 starter. Worst case scenario, we can make him our long reliever/mop-up guy. With guys like Rosa and Cortes waiting in the minors, I am fine with either scenario. But thinking Davies can be a “strong #3” starter is almost certainly a pipe dream.
I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that a package of Bannister and Gathright/German could bring any remotely decent talent in a trade. We would be selling low with Banny (and to some degree, Teahen), plus both Gathright and German (and again, to some degree, Teahen) are basically spare parts (Gathright probably isn’t even that). You can’t expect to trade a career bench player and a #5 starter and get a decent hitter in return.
I do think next year’s bench will have some better hitters—Kila and Shealy both stand a chance of making the 2009 opening day roster (but only one of them will probably be on it as long as Gload is around). Shealy probably guaranteed himself one more year with the tear he has been on since being called up.

I think it says something
I have a bit of a theory about this…
The Royals players have gone for years without any sort of expectation put on them. The only teams in recent memory that had any resemblance of expectation were that epic 2004 team, and I believe the ’00 team (It was either ’00 or ’01, the year after the offense was top notch, we just had no pitching). Those efforts of course went poorly (but I still say that it Tony Pena Sr had gotten in the shower with the guys naked as opposed to fully grown, the season would have turned around), and the organization recoiled from it.
What a lot of people view as a meeting where GMDM was ‘calling out’ his team, I think he was beginning the process of expecting expectations (!?) from this squad, to see who could hack it.
People throw around terms like grit, & Play the game the right way when referring to other small market darlings, the Twins, and to a degree Marlins. I think it is much simpler than that. I think they are EXPECTED to win, day in & day out. From the ticket takers, to the fans, to the GM, to the manager, to the scouting department, to the teammates, EVERYONE in their organization EXPECTS them to win. Now, expectations aren’t the only thing, they also have some talent, don’t get me wrong.
Expectations can lead to puckered ass holes a lot of times, but it doesn’t seem to in those organizations. THAT is what makes me happy about the last month. The guys weren’t tight, they played some of their loosest & free flowing ball of the season. They acted more like a team than they had all season. Everyone (even JoGui) seemed to enjoy being around eachother (granted, I’m watching on TV, and am not in the clubhouse, I could be wrong), and the results speak from themselves.
The real test will come this offseason & next spring. I don’t want to hear the same company line when GMDM or Trey is posed with… Q – “What expectations do you have as far as a win total for the ’09 squad? Can they challenge .500 or better?” A – “We don’t want to put a number on it, because we don’t want to set a ceiling. We just want to see improvement.” Bull Shit. The Organization needs to put either a Win # out there for those players to stare at all winter.

Hank to Yanks: “The problem wasn’t your injured pitching, it’s just that Yankeees management and fans don’t have high enough expectations.”

completely
totally, pointless to invoke an injury riddled yankee team to the point that I was trying to make. If you disagree with everything I say, or think everything I say is stupid, then just don’t read it. Don’t feel the need to post an argumentative response everytime, it gets old

No, no, no
I’m fairly certain that neither he nor anyone else disagrees with everything you say or thinks everything you say is stupid. But we are entitled to disagree with each other from time to time (and even frequently). Sometimes this includes poking a bit of fun, and even snarkiness. At worst, I think the above was good natured snarkiness. We all post our opinions freely, sometimes people agree, often they disagree. I think if you are posting any comments on any open internet forum, you need to expect that and be prepared for it. And also, not take it personally.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

If there is any validity to the idea the Royals weren't trying hard enough
then that’s a pretty big indictment of Hillman’s motivational abilities.

As far as our outfield
next year, I think they will acquire one corner outfieder and reatain Maier because of the frequent injuries to Dejuses. Maier would make a better choice that Gathwright.
