How bad was August 08?

I know RR has some issues with the arbitrary evaluation of using months as a timeframe; never-the-less:

August 08 was only tied for the 3rd worst month since 2004.

Read that again, and tell me how depressing that is!

Worse months since 2004:

August 05:  5-21

April 06: 5-17

July 04: 7-20

August 08: 7-20

A few weeks ago, somebody posted something about this being worse than the earlier 12 game losing streak, and I disagreed. Looks like I was dead wrong on that...

i said that about that run being worse than the 12 gamer

it was mostly on how the games were played more than just the record…i really couldn’t imagine worse baseball

Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

Duckworth could have won

August pitcher of the month, despite not being called up until the month was nearly over.

That’s just sad.

In all seriousness

I can’t take the Royals seriously for now. I stopped watching them in late July because I knew that they had no chance of making the second half interesting, albeit I did not expect them to completely collapse in August.

The Royals organization is in a painful rebuilding process, and until that process is complete as a fan I have lost interest in taking part. It would be an entirely different story, if say, I was working on the rebuilding project in the Royals front office, but for now consider me analogous to a formerly entrenched investor in a once great company that completely fell on its face in recent years due to mismanagement. I’ve sold most, but not all of, my stock in the Royals and won’t start investing again until I know I can get get the returns I want. Until then I will pause every few weeks to check the share price (win loss column) and glance at my quarterly returns (see how potentially promising assets like Butler, Gordon and prospects are performing).

To move away from the analogy, I haven’t hit the Rob Neyer point where I’ve given up on the Royals franchise entirely, but I really don’t see them seriously contending until 2011 or 2012 when, hopefully, the positive shift in organizational thinking reflected in the 2007 and 2008 drafts bear fruit. Until then, I’ll pay attention to teams worth watching.

Looking for a new team.

I'm kinda with you

I was optimistic mid-summer, but that optimism has disappeared. Dayton can revive it with a successful off-season, but if he uses all that time chasing after big ticket free agents, I’ll probably be disappointed. OTOH, if he makes a shrewd trade (like Chicago acquiring Carlos Quentin), I’ll be pretty pumped.

+1

This is why my posts and comments have virtually disappeared. I love the team, but the agony. I can still occasionally find some interest in individual stories and performances (the Hawaiian guy, Butler, Greinke, Soria, Aviles). But this hurts that much more because of the optimism out of the gate. They could’ve put us out of our misery by doing in April what they did in August. – TL

I’m not a big fan of fans losing interest and not following the team halfway through the season. But I guess there are all kinds of fans.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Somehow this reply...

…fits your profile picture, RR. Good one. For the record, it’s more that I lost energy to expend here, than that I lost interest in the team. You can’t just shed a 30-year affiliation because of one season. Although, to be fair to myself, this sucky-ness has lasted for nearly 1/2 my term. …Wow, we’ve stunk for almost 15 years. – TL

i don't think it's "Meh"

I can see how someone would need some sort of Royals Viagra right now to keep the interest up. The Royals just aren’t that sexy. They’re a little down in the dumps, which is always fun to be around. They’re a little tempermental. They don’t seem to want to be around us right now. Have faith, – TL. I think the younger version of your baseball mistress just might have what the doctor ordrered.

It's good to see that...

…the old “I probably disagree with you” NYRoyal hasn’t died! But what if your girlfriend just lies there—-and lies there, and lies there, and lies there. …Okay, that’s enough for a family friendly fan site. – TL

Thankfully being a fan of a team isn't like being in a romantic, intimate relationship

There are all kinds of fans, and that’s fine. There are casual, part-time fans who only pay attention to the Royals when they feel “excited” by the team. That’s cool. I just prefer fans who stick with their team and fall them all season and all year round. But it takes all kinds.

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Perhaps the relationship analogy...

…that fits my current situation best is that of a 30-year-old marriage that has settled into the empty-nest, you-do-your-thing-and-I’ll-do-mine phase. Until the Royals spruce things up or I buy new glasses, we’ll be comfortably numb together. – TL

Hey now

The Royals made $25 million this year. Or are rumored to have. That’s a great investment on stock.
