Moore interviewed on 810 this morning
GMDM was interviewed on 810 this morning. I didn't catch the whole interview, but I assume it'll be up on 810's website.
He stated that he was expecting between 78 and 82 wins this year, so we were only slightly off in reality. He pointed to May and August, and said we're not giving young guys free passes anymore just because they're young guys. Expects to be better and expects to compete.
Most impactful move he's made since becoming GM is hiring Hillman. Said he was "disappointed" in Posnanski's "sensationalized" article on Hillman losing the clubhouse... "someone with his reputation..." I believe he threw "irresponsible" in there somewhere also. Basically said every clubhouse has 2-3 guys who will say whatever to air their beef regardless of truth.
Didn't specifically mention any position players that I remember... might have come later in the interview.
Said Davies is a hot topic for almost all MLB scouts right now. Said he pitched better than anytime since DM's been watching him (since 17 years old).
There were some other tidbits, but I had to tune out. So someone please fill in what I've missed, and Hillman will be giving a year end press conference today.

Sounds to me like
he has put Gordon and Butler on alert that there are absolutely no more excuses for them to underperform. Also people like Teabag, Gload, and Buck will most likely be gone as the have underperformed for too long. He is looking at the whole picture and not really taking any performances (except Hiram’s) into account.
His comments regarding players not getting along with Hillman suggests that he will be looking to get rid of those players who have shaken up the clubhouse, except JoGui, who Moore thinks the “reward outweighed the risk”

Retro = irrresponsible
Like well-known muckracker Joe Posnanski
Let me add Butler to the list. Seems to be a real Hillman/Moore ’"favorite."
I’d be surprised if Gordon was on the list, but not totally surprised. Maybe Dayton didn’t have time to read my “top five second-half hitters” hist from last night, but he might have noticed that Gordon and Butler actually played pretty well over the second half.
Seriously, I live in Ontario, and would like to hear the playback. Link?

I always say anyone should be available for the right deal
(some really original insight there)
But I’m pretty sure this would be selling low on Butler.
I’m going to risk getting reamed out, let me say that, in my humble opinion, Yuniesky Betancourt would not be a sufficient return.
But that’s just me, taklng a rumor from well known irresponsible journalist Sam Mellinger.

Gordon's 104 OPS+ is not hurting us
Just like I said last year, I think now is the time to lock up Gordon. At worst he’s an average 3B with defensive skills. Get him locked up before he truly does breakout and will cost us a ton more.

I was going to do a long fanpost about why the Royals should lock up Gordon
Part of it is based on my lame-ass opinion that he will break out next year, and so a resigning now is “buying low.”
Still, let’s say he just stays at 104 OPS+. At worst, let’s say he “has” to move to 1B. That would suck, but when is the last time the Royals had a 1B who was an above average hitter."? There are worse players like that traded every day. If he moves to the OF, once again, I think it’s been just as long or longer since the Royals had a 104 OPS+ outfielder. And remember, Gordon’s heavy on OBP side that OPS doesn’t do justice to.
Like I said, I think he should stay at 3B at least through next year. I also think he will starting hitting at least in the low 800s OPS range (around 110-115 OPS+ this year). That hitting will play decently anywhere, and the Royals need help in the corners anyway (Butler’s the closest thing to a sure thing at 1B [I like Kila, but he’s hardly a sure thing]).
I don’t know much about negotiating, but I can’t help but wonder how much the Royals would ave by signing him now, after a .785 OPS season with 16 home runs, then after next year, when he goes .830 OPS with 23 home runs (off-the-cuff conservative projection).

He also said
That in order to entertain the thought of trading Greinke away, they’d have to be floored by an offer. He didn’t however, seem like extending him was a huge priority. It was his tag line about if the player shows interest, they’ll explore the possibilities…
I still say that one of those 2 things HAS to happen this offseason
by GoBabies!! on Sep 30, 2008 12:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think it may have not
seemed like a “huge priority” because, I think he wanted to cover his ass in case they didn’t get to resign him. To my ears, his words about Greinke made it seem like that was definitely a priority, just no promises.

I don't think
it is a matter of a guy flipping a switch when he is all of a sudden expected to do so, and I don’t think any one person did that.
I was speaking more of locker room talk, moral, and focus issues that come with a team where everyone expects to win, as oppoosed to occaissonally hope to win.
And look, I don’t mind at all being disagreed with, and I’m not some message board newbie. I get that everyone to some degree or another thinks their views are right, and person x’s views are wrong. The bigger picture is, look, everyone on here wants the R’s to do things to get better. Nobody on here has all the answers, and nobody is all wet either.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I would rather have GWB as the the owner over Glass.
Believe it or not, I actually think he’d be a better manager than Hillman. No politics, but policies aside, I think his personality wasn’t right for the job. He never seemed like he wanted to do it all that bad. I can see him betting along well in the locker room.

injury clause
I hope that if they sign Furcal, which seems to be the wish of DM, that they protect us big time against chronic injury. We should not be signing any guy that has developed BACK problems. Haven’t we learned anything? If we sign Furcal, it better be based SOLELY on performance measures. If the guy can’t play, we shouldn’t pay. If he won’t sign with us on those kind of conditions then we should be happy to say sayonara.

BS
DM is saying the right things about wanting to bring up Shealy but couldn’t and therefore brought up Aviles. Unfortunately, I don’t believe any of this and think it’s revisionist history. They’ve been cold on Shealy and they were cold on Aviles. When I hear him talk about Aviles it sounds to me that he’s STILL cold on Aviles. What the hell is his problem? I also think he’s a non-believer in Shealy too. Although, frankly, I don’t know if I’m a true believer in Shealy yet either. However, I do have complete faith in knowing that he is and always has been and will be a better option than Gloady. There is simply no excuse and no revisionist history possible to cover for the stupidity of DM apparently thinking that Gload was the answer at 1st.
