Sheehan Says Aviles May Deserve RoY
Hey, guys! Still busy moving, but saw this and nobody else has posted (probably because I think it's BP Premium content, so sorry about that).
American League Rookie of the Year
1. Evan Longoria
2. Mike Aviles
3. Joba Chamberlain
Longoria's VORP edge on Aviles is tiny, and what's surprising is that his defensive edge, at least in the plus-minus system, doesn't exist. Aviles was +15, Longoria +11. I had no idea Aviles had sustained his hot start, and there's a pretty strong case for him ahead of Longoria, based largely on him being a better defensive shortstop than was advertised. Chamberlain pitched very well in both his roles, and could have won had he stayed on the mound all year.
Sheehan gives the AL MVP and Cy Young to Cliff Lee (with honorable mention to the Mexicutioner for the latter), and AL MoY to Madden. NL, it's Pujols, Santana, Geovany Soto, and Fredi Gonzalez.
I'm not sure whether they're restricting the IBA to premium users, but if not be sure to vote when they go live in a few days. Maybe we can push Aviles over the top.
Nice to see the Tigers all alone in last place -- now go Twins!

I hope you aren’t typing this from your iPhone on the road. Keep the Greenies flowing!

I predict
Aviles doesn’t finish in the top three in voting.

Any chance
Aviles had at finishing in the top 3 ended on Monday night when Alexi Ramirez hit that HR. That put a bright enough spotlight on him to garner some more votes,…

Aviles will probably finish 3rd
but I don’t think he should be any lower than 2nd.
Voters for these type of awards, at least collectively, are still not all that hip on sabermetrics, IMHO.
Aviles actually ended up besting Longoria in VORP, for what it’s worth. I think the voters will give it to Longoria because his counting stats are far more impressive, and I think they will put A Ramirez 2nd. I can live with Longoria ahead of him, but A Ramirez ahead of him would be just plain wrong.

4 – Ellsbury
5 – Aviles

Ramirez over Longoria?
That’s pure silliness bro. It makes zero sense.
Longoria: .273/.343/.531, gold glove defense at 3B
Ramirez: .290/.317/.475, meh defense at 2B
also
Aviles: .325/.354/.480, good defense at SS

Might
be a bit of glass eye on that vote, I’ll admit.
Ramirez killed us this year, and was more or less as important to the Sox as Evan was to the Rays (I don’t recall the Rays exactly falling apart when Evan was gone for a month or so, is the only reason I say that).

There's
no real “reason”. Both players pass the ‘eye’ test for me. I didn’t look at the numbers at all before I typed my ballot. I’m a little surprised the SLG # is so different between Evan & Ramirez. I think both players will have really good careers. Longoria will win, and he is deserving of it….
From ArnchairGm.com..
Rookie of the Year:
For a while there it looked like Tampa Bay Rays’ Evan Longoria would win the thing easily, but he got hurt and missed some time, and in his absence, a few others had a chance to make some noise. Alexei Ramirez of the Chicago White Sox set a rookie record by hitting four grand slams this year, and will get some votes, but his lackluster .315 OBP (thanks to walking unintentionally only once every ten games or so) and ineffectiveness on the basepaths (13 for 22 in steals). Plus, his awful defense at second base (-12 FRAA) should keep him out of serious discussions for the RoY.
Jacoby Ellsbury led the AL with 50 steals, and led AL rookies with 98 runs scored, but he slowed down after the All-Star break, and didn’t hit for power or hit for much of anything away from Fenway Park, so he won’t get it either.
The Kansas City Royals’ shortstop Mike Aviles turned some heads by hitting .325 in about two-thirds of a season, but I just don’t think he played enough to get serious consideration.
What about pitchers? They can win this award, too, you know.
The Detroit Tigers’ Armando Galarraga won 13 games, pitching 179 innings with an impressive 3.73 ERA that ranks 15th in the AL. ( NOTE: His insanely low .239 BABIP likely means that he’s in for a rude awakening next year when Lady Luck catches up to him.)
Joba Chamberlain was even more valuable, in terms of VORP, but due to injuries, he pitched only 100 innings and will generally be viewed as a disappointment, at least for this season. LAnahfornia’s Jose Arredondo went 10-2 with a 1.62 ERA in 61 relief innings, but he probably won’t get much support. Glen Perkins of Minnesota went 12-4, but then a decade ago, El Duque did that too, with a better ERA, and he finished 4th in the voting.
Oakland Athletics’ Brad Ziegler started his career with a record 38 consecutive scoreless innings, and ended the season as the A’s closer, but nobody ever heard of giving an award to a guy who went 3-0 with 11 saves, even if he did post a Bob-Gibson-esque 1.06 ERA in 59 innings, so that’s not gonna happen. Besides, he might not have been the best rookie reliever in his own bullpen, as Joey Devine finished the year with a 0.59 ERA in 45 innings.
So we’re back to Longoria, which is where we should be. Not only did he lead all AL rookies in homers, RBI, slugging, and OPS, but he led the field in VORP and WARP as well, by a healthy margin, thanks to his excellent defense.
My votes would go for Longoria, Galaragga and Aviles, in that order.

Aviles got second on my ballot
Longoria gets credit for hitting like that for a longer period of time. Aviles had 4 months. Aviles deserves second. I’m not sure Ramirez is top 4.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

4 grand slams!!!11
you just can’t put a value on that! His contributions go beyond just the game!
Accidentally not thedude925 anymore. I do hate this new name.

Agreed
I find her pretty, not gorgeous. Just pretty. Maybe very pretty. If she weren’t a “tv star,” no one would think much of her beauty.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
