Another great one, recent release

Underrated 1980 band. Colaiuta’s last tour. Ray and Ike on vocals. Steve Vai’s first tour. Frank mainly plays that sweet cherry sunburst job (with Dimarzios, I think) on this your (before he discovered Floyd Roses…). Awesome drumming and vocals, of course. Best version of “Keep it Greasey” ever.
Unbelievable soloing on “Chungas Revenge,” “The Torture Never Stops,” (trademark wide-open flanger), “Pick Me, I’m Clean” (the “Inca Roads” progression), and the “Secret Carlos Santana Progression” thing on “City of Tiny Lites” starts out with an so-Godzilla-its-scary octave-divider/envelope filter tone.

Don't knock it!

Actually, Joe’s Garage (which she ‘guests’ on) is of the same general era as The Wall and 2112, ’cept Zappa made it up over a weekend as a joke. And, of course, it blows both of them away.
Dale got to know Frank through her then husband, Vinnie’s predecessor and fellow godlike drummer (and Zappa personal favorite) Terry Bozzio. Along with former Zappa sidemen Patrick O’Hearn (great bassist, later a sadly cheesy New Age artist) and the insane guitarist Warren Curruccurlo (Vai’s predecessor — the first Italian virtuoso, later Duran Duran guitarist), they formed Missing Persons.

Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Napolean Murphy Brock was right
After listening to Zappa for a while, even the stuff that sounds “normal,” it takes a while to listen to other stuff. And i think it works the other way, too. I go through phases where I listen to absolutely no Frank, then that’s the only thing, but I have a hard time mixing. I think it’s because even his “standard” progressions are warped —instead of I-IV-V, he’ll use I-II-IV, and stuff like that.

because I am all about melody. Even though my “roots” are firmly in prog, if your twisted time signatures and bizarre progressions aren’t “catchy” I can’t hang. Which is to say, I also can’t listen to Gong or Soft Machine, and have difficulty with Gentle Giant and sometimes even Camel.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
I'm actually not that much of a prog guy
A bit — I know the more mainstream side — the popualr Kansas and Yes tunes. But I was more into metal, and, through my guitar teacher, got into jazz. The Zappa thing became a side obsession through Vai. Got me into free jazz and avant-garde “art” music.

Yep.
Like I said, all three. The first one (Wetton/Jobson/Holdsworth/Bruford), and Danger Money and Night After Night (Wetton/Jobson/Bozzio).
Eddie Jobson deserved a better fate than writing commercial jingles. His first “solo” record (Zinc) was a really incredibly interesting thing.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
I think he might have gotten a certain "rap" with musicians he worked with
Of course, Zappa tended to have a different perspective on things.
he never said directly what the problem was with Jobson, but Eddie didn’t last long. Zappa seemed to go out of his way in interviews to not rip him (unlike, say, Jean-Luc Ponty)

Eddie never lasted long with anyone
UK was his longest association, and Wetton and Bozzio both say he killed that one.
Jobson was rumoured to join Yes, in the 90125 era. Nobody talks about why that didn’t happen, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he managed to piss them off during the first meeting. ;)
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
I think it was the barbershop hat

He’s really writing jingles? I figured he’d at least be doing soundtracks like every other 1970s synthesizer guy.

That's what he was doing in the late 80s/early 90s
In the late 90s, he was trying to put together a new UK project, and Wetton and Bruford were on board.
They never recorded a track.
Sarcasm™. It's the new gravy.
Was he just hard to work with?
Or was it more “personal issues” a la Alberto Callaspo/Keith Moon.

I Saw Holdsworth
With Alan Heisman’s Tempest opening for Fleetwood Mac at the Free State Opera House in Lawrence in the early middle 70’s. Mac was touring on “Penguin” and “Mystery to Me”, and Bob Welch and some guy who played flute were the front men. Christine Perfect was playing keyboards and singing a little.
Holdsworth was the fastest thing I’d ever seen, but I didn’t care for the material they did. I was impressed, though. Mac brought the house down. There wasn’t a pitcher in the place after we got ours, literally the last one they had; we guarded it with our lives. They did five encores, and they had to turn up the lights and run us out at midnight.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Wow!
That’s REALLY early Holdsworth — I always thought that was his first recorded band, and that he didn’t last long in it.
(Pretty sure Allan likes his pints a wee bit too much, given that it comes up in every interview. Then again. all the interviews are the same — “I wanted to play saxophone, not guitar,” “I suck, it’s terrible,” “They only gave me a 15,000 dollar advance and six months to make the album” blah blah blah… I used to feel sorry for him until I met real some jazz guys in new York you would get 2,000 dollars to records an album in two days.)

I have the second Gong album on vinyl, too
In the late 80s one could pick up all that shit for 3-6 dollars, wish I had done more
Have all the good Al DiMeola albums (the first 4) o vinyl. Got ’em all unscratched and used. Well, maybe not the first one back then… A lot of early Holdsworth.
A friend gave me the UK one as well.
Soft Machine keeps changing, right? Was Elton Dean in before or After Holdsworth?
Allan was in a LOTS of groups

Clapton was too emo, couldn't decide who he wanted to be
left the yardbirds cause they were too “pop,” left Cream because he wanted to be in The Band — a “Pop” (ular) band.
the other "Bird, Page, was, I must admit, brilliant in the studio, even if the clams can’t all be attributed to drugs… drugs didn’t help…

The best kind of failure!
My impression fro reading Jim Marshall interviews is that Hendrix had already recorded this album when he came in and asked for the big stacks from Jim.
Personally, I think people misunderstand what was great about Hendrix. His solos and fuzztone are overrated. His songwriting, awesomely funky rhythm playing (and accompanying Fendery clean tones) are underrated.

Yup, that's the original cover idea.
You can see Hendrix on the far right — he used to come see the Mothers before he was anyone — probably heard a wah wah for the first time when Frank was using it.
The “anti-capitalist” Beatles (or their reps) held this album up for over a year because of the cover. This cover only came out later, or was on the fold. It came out later on the CD.
Here’s what they had to put out.

The music is what really undermines the Beatles. The lyrics not only rips the Sgt. Pepper’s/Haight-Asbury thing to shreds, but the musical parody and virtuosic composition accomplishments (particularly on “The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny”) show up “classic” tunes like “A Day in the Life” as child’s play compared to Zappa’s blend of R & B, Varese, and Stravinksy.

Every 0fer that Pena puts up from here on out is a good thing
Decreases the chances that he’ll be back next year as an “indispensable defensive replacement.”

Gathright at least provides genuinely good, reliable defense
(and is a good pinch runner). There still isn’t enough there to really like, but at least he provides something. Pena makes some spectacular out of zone plays, but he’s just not sufficiently reliable to even be a good defensive replacement.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

Speaking of OF defense
What do you make of Teahen’s +5 UZR last year? I know that doesn’t exactlly make him Tris Speaker, but might that indicate anything (combined with what you see — I don’t get to watch games) about his ability to play a relatively competent CF? I don’t mean as the starter, but as “the” 4th OF who can cover all the spots… I don’t mean he has to be awesome, but that he’d would be a CF version of Adam Dunn’s defense (or, for that matter, Jose Guillen’s OF defense, which is just slightly better, from the sounds of things)

Teahen's defense
Would I be comfortable with Teahen being the backup CFer? Definitely. His lack of progress this season defensively means that he would make a well below average CFer. But I think he’d be sufficient as DeJesus’s backup. And if DeJesus goes on the DL, you call up Maier. But I doubt Dayton Moore shares my opinion on this.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
