Hillman says Shealy, Ka’aihue will share time at first base (Gload regulated to outfield)
The good news? Hillman goes on record saying they're going to platoon first base between Shealy and Ka'aihue.
The bad news? Hillman said this means more Ross Gload at the corner outfield spots, in right and left.
The funny news? Hillman felt the need to make sure everyone knew he had already run this idea past Gload first. Seriously, why does Trey think it even matters if Gload is ok with the switch?
I can just see Hillman putting his arm around Gload's shoulder, consoling him Ross that it's going to be ok, that he still has a chance to play if "he turns up his work in the outfield — in left and right."
Poor Gload.

Maybe he wants to show that he treats veteran players with respect. Perhaps this is relevant to FA’s. I’m just guessing here. But I don’t have a problem with him trying to smooth things over with players. It’s Hillman’s job to do what is best for the team and hopefully keep players from being pissed. You can’t always do that, but it is worth a try.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
Probably true
After the way Guillen and Olivo bitched about playing time and position switches, he probably didn’t want Ross to become the next malcontent.

Further good news
…is that in the new scenario, apparently Gload isn’t going to be playing everyday. He hasn’t played at all this month. He will be competing for playing time in the OF with DeJesus, Guillen, Teahen and German. Apparently he won’t be starting against any LHP.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
that's definitely a good thing. it is a beautiful thing to see a lineup free of the TPJ and Gload shackles
…also, I realize I’m only three weeks into the school year so far, so I may be a bit rusty….but what exactly is being “regulated” to the outfield? Isn’t it “relegated?” Please don’t take this as a grammar police violation….I’m actually very curious, because I would love to know what type of regulating Warren G and Nate Dogg could do to our boy Gloadie. Tell me you wouldn’t want to see Gangsta Gload?!!! That would be great. I might actually not get sick to my stomach when I saw him on the field.

The apparent hatred
toward Ross Gload is SOOOOOO misguided IMO.
Don’t Hate Ross Gload for being the player that he is, hate GMDM/TH for thinking he is an everyday 1B.
I don’t think Gload will make one peep about not being an everyday player. I think he is the type that realizes that if he is an everyday 1B, the team is no good. But if he is on a team where he is a 4th OF/Backup 1B/PH type, the team has a chance to be OK (ala the Sox in ’05)
I’m not sure why a lot of you pee & moan when he hits his $50K performance bonuses either. It’s not your $$. It’s not costing us a Free Agent, or a Draft Pick. It’s just giving a average ball player more $$ in his pocket. Good for him. Congrats. Now sit on the bench and watch for a month, and good luck next spring in your quest to be a 5th IF, 4th OF on this team.

We are just giving credit where credit is due
It is Moore’s job to put together a good team. With regard to first base, he failed this year. It is Hillman’s job to put together a good lineup. With regard to first base, he failed this year. It is Gload’s job to perform well on the field. With regard to hitting, he failed this year. Moore, Hillman and Gload all deserve blame.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.
by Scott McKinney on Sep 5, 2008 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions
Yea but
Gload is what he is.
Just b/c He isn’t a power hitter, and couldn’t become one overnight when GMDM forgot to get a power hitter, doesn’t mean Gload is the root of all evil, or for that matter, deserves one iota of ‘blame’
I don't hate G-Load
I just think he sucks. Sorry Russ, put on a happy face! There, I knew you could do it.
I’m frustrated with Moore’s seeming non-plan on offense (“power on the corners, defense up the middle,” Brilliant!). He’s had an understandable mulligan so far. But if Gload ends up being the primary 1B all year next year while Kila is raking in AAA, or Shealy could be platooning with him, or other DHs or platoons or passed up, well, then we’re going to have to go to the mattresses with DMGM.

God, this debate again
Everybody deserves the credit/blame for their performance, both good and bad. Why does Moore get the blame for his poor performance in this regard but Gload gets none? Moore “is what he is” right?
No, Gload is not the root of all evil. He’s a shitty baseball player, period. That’s what we’re giving him credit for. It isn’t personal.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

I'll be brief
The issue here is not whether Ross Gload sucks or Dayton Moore is an idiot. They both are.
But you can’t hold a organization responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the entire league? And if the entire leagueis guilty, then isn’t this an indictment of our sports in general? I put it to you, NYRoyal- isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to Ross Gload, but we’re not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America.

I think he
“Sucks” as an everyday 1B, yes, but that is because he is miscast.
I think he is just fine as a 4th/5th OF/IF type.
I have no hatred or anger toward Gload at all.
He sucks because he plays poorly
Is a .658 OPS just fine for a bench player who can only play LF, 1B and DH (with good defense at 1B and horrible defense in the OF)?
I don’t have hatred or anger at any player, coach, manager or general manager because of their performance. But we hold them accountable for their performance. That goes for Gload, Hillman, Moor and Glass (and everyone else in the organization). When they suck, it’s ok for us to say that they suck. And when they suck, they are going to be ridiculed, and rightly so.
This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

what I want to know is
can your girlfriend really transform herself into looking like Jessica Alba?
If I had a girlfriend
That couldn’t transform herself into looking like Jessica Alba…
Because, mucho kudos if so!
You know, your argument doesn’t actually fly. Ross is pretty good defensively at 1B. Alba is pretty. Ross sucks at everything else. Alba is merely OK as an actress, and she may not be a nice person at all. So while she looks good (Ross’ D), she just might not be all that elsewhere (everything else for Ross).
Although, Ms. Alba does give decent interviews and is involved in many charities… so maybe she’s the total package. Anyway, Ross sucks and he should be gone.
Don't Stop Believing!
Also
Alba actually looks good pregnant. No way Gload could pull that off.

You know Ross Gload hates penguins. Not Jessica.
Don't Stop Believing!
We are
Never going to have a roster filled with .800 OPS guys. Any anger or calling out of Ross Gload is misguided IMO.
Once again, refer to my personal policy of not booing players. I’ll only get on guys if they give the appearance of not caring or trying. Gload is the complete opposite of that. The guy played out the string last year with a torn quad for gods sake.
I’m not a Gload apologist, he should be on the bench for the last month of the season, no doubt. He should have been on the bench in June for that matter, and Bam Bam or Shealy should have taken 9/10 starts @ 1B.
And his OPS would (or at least in theory SHOULD) be much higher if he was used correctly as a spot starter, platoon type, not everyday. See Utility players we’ve made into everyday players in the past for precedent (Desi comes to mind w/o research)
For the record, I never boo players either.
I’m with you 100% that Gload is not who we should be directing our ire at on this. I agree Billy Bombs should have been at 1st some, and Wheelies should have been up. I’m 16,947% sure that GMDM and Hillman are at fault on this.
But Gload would still have poor numbers if he only hit once a week. Whether facing lefties (OPS of .586) or righties (OPS of .673). Hey got his fewest at bats per month during May, and had his worst month by far. How many plate appearances do you think he should have had? Again, I realize you don’t think he should be out there either, but I contend that he’s not even good enought to be a backup.
Don't Stop Believing!
It will be hard for the Royals to have a roster full of .800 OPS players
I would think that having a .800 OPS 1B isn’t much to ask. Hell, .788 is the league average. Ross isn’t within 40 points of that for his career, even against righties. This season, he’s 130 points off…
even if his defense is as good as Hillman/Moore say it is, it’s at the least important defensive position.
of the 24 Royals who have batted this year, Ross Gload currently has the second lowest Value Over Replacement Player (Teahen [ugh!] and TPJ are lower). That’s right. Noted mashers Joey Gathright, John BUck, Jason Smith, Kyle Davies, and Gil Meche have all contributed more on offense this season.
He’s 32 years old, he isn’t going to be better. So saying he sucks and doesn’t have a place on the team he more than fair. He might have a place on a contending team that needs a 1B off the bench — maybe in the NL, where he could pinch hit. But Hillman keeps running him out there (blame), and DMGM signed him for two years (blame).
He might be a great guy. And I’m happy he’s made good money in baseball. But he sucks at it.

First of all
Everyone should thank me for bringing up Jessica Alba, which led to the eye candy.
2nd of all, I gues my major major beef with the way that Gload is being portrayed stems from the comments inferring that Gload will complain about losing starting 1B duties. I think that is wholy untrue, and there is nothing to back it up, I think Gload realizes that he is a U at most. We have been using him as ManCaveItch.
We haven’t heard a peep from G-Load in 2 years. Maybe I am giving him too much credit, but I think he realizes what he is as a ball player, and what he is isn’t an everyday player.
Complaining
I gues my major major beef with the way that Gload is being portrayed stems from the comments inferring that Gload will complain about losing starting 1B duties.
I don’t think anyone said that he would complain. I know I didn’t. What I said was that Hillman talked to him about changing and decreasing his role in September first because part of his job is to try to prevent and avoid players getting pissed, resentful and feeling disrespected and marginalized. So it was wise to talk to Gload about this, not because he’s a hothead who is going to flip out, but because it is a smart way to handle vets, period.

With the contract he got and the playing time he’s had since coming to the Royals, he should be the happiest man in baseball. He’s had absolutely nothing to complain about. For some reason that didn’t keep him from being a jerk at the fan fest (according to multiple attendees).
