Game 140 Open Thread - Indians (67-71) at Royals (60-79)

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals, Sep 5, 2008 8:10 PM EDT

Thanks to a three game sweep of the A's the Royals have mostly put to rest our fears of a surprising 100-loss season. As for not finishing in last place or even improving on last season's win total? Well, not so much. To do either, the Royals need to start with winning this weekend's series against the Indians, who went 18-10 in August and are 26-18 since the All-Star Break.

Your pitching matchup is Anthoy Reyes (2.93 ERA) versus Ducky (4.91 ERA). Tonight's start will be Ducky's 80th as a Big Leaguer and his 14th as a Royal.

Kila's in the lineup, playing 1B and batting 9th

I assume everyone is having a moment alone to, erm, celebrate?

Why not?

Where should this rookie be in the lineup in his first major league at bat?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

maybe you guys/gals were going to already

could you update each play that Kila is remotely involved in? (not being sarcastic)

what i mean is, Kila is our final hope for something good to come out of September.

for instance i saw a single to right by Cabrera, but was there any way Kila could have gotten to it (or would G-Load have had a chance)? i need to know these things.

he just got a ground ball, turned it into an out.

Lowery looked ok. Seemed a bit nervous.

Didn’t throw terrible. Slider wasn’t super sharp. Fastball wasn’t bad. Had late run. Didn’t look like he had a MLB out pitch tonight but he did well. I think he’ll be ok. Does he start in MLB or Omaha next year?

Really think he'll start at Omaha in 09

Without the crystal ball prediction on trades, etc, the bullpen has Soria, R. Ramirez, Nunez, Mahay and Bale

That leaves all the rest of pitchers to sort out 2 spots. Some won’t return like Gobble but the competition will be stiff. As we have seen in 08, pitching staff depth is NEVER deep enough. Who would have thought in spring training that the pen would have Kip Wells, Josh Newman, Robinson Tejeda, Brandon Duckworth, and Jeff Fulchino. Let’s hope in 09 some of the Royals farm hands like Carlos Rosa, Chris Hayes, Chris Nicoll and Devon Lowery will take some of those innings.

by daveyork on Sep 5, 2008 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point - I do think using him in a bullpen role is where he is best

Having Bale in the rotation to start the season was a mistake that cost the Royals. I see Bale as being 2nd lefty in the pen along with Mahay. Don’t see Gobble coming back as a LOOGY and the Royals don’t seem to have much faith in Musser. Newman is only a patch – insurance policy. Right now, Bale is the 2nd best LH KC has even though 08 season has been a lost one.

by daveyork on Sep 5, 2008 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bale

if Hillman didn’t use Gobble as a Loogy what makes you think he will use Bale that way? I don’t know if that other man in the bullpen is on the roster right now, I doubt if GMDM is done tinkering with the pitching roster.

that's a good point.

Gobble had good numbers against lefties all year.

Righties were just brutal to him.

NW Ark got beat.... must win three straight to stay alive. They are now hosting so they should be ok.

We hope.
