2009 FanFest

Who is headed to FanFest this weekend? I wasn't able to make it last year, but since I am moving back to KC (and got a 21 game pack for this season), I am flying back from LA for it. Anyone who went last year have any suggestions for those of us who want to make the most of the weekend and see/hear everything? I am betting with everything expanded from last year, it would be smart to get there as early as possible.

yeah

We went the first day last year and it was pretty packed. I took the wife and kids (7 and 5) and there was a lot to do, but there was also a wait for most things.
I think we are going to go on Saturday, I don’t think it will be nearly as packed.

In the Royals game of life, Neifi Perez is the rake.

Some MLB teams' fanfests include a Q&A session with the GM

I don’t think the Royals did that last year. Boy it would be fun to have one of those this year.

I was there the 2nd day last year

and I could swear there was at least an abbreviated Q&A with Moore after he finished his talk with the announcers.

Yeah, but the Royals know

that your average 12 year old fan will ak more incisve questions than Dick “grit” Kaegel. So obviously, they try and avoid that scenario happening.

Sounds pretty painful

There is a Q&A

with Dayton and with some players.
The trick is… I think only kids are really allowed to ask questions.

The fun part is manipulating your kids into asking what you want to ask. Have fun!

It would be hard to coach a little kid into asking a good question

I think a 7-year-old could manage “Why did you pay so much for replacement level players?” Now I just have to fly to KC and rent a 7-year-old.

That's just the Kids Only Press Conference

There will be a separate Q&A for Dayton and Trey where anyone can ask a question. It’s on the schedule:

http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/kc/fan_forum/fanfest.jsp#details

on that page you need to follow the link for Main Stage activities

"MAIN STAGE
The Main Stage at the 2009 Royals FanFest will include several insightful and entertaining programs for fans including Q&A sessions with General Manager Dayton Moore and Manager Trey Hillman as well as Royals players and coaches. The Royals will also host the popular Kids’ Only Press Conference and other special sessions throughout the two-day fan extravaganza. "

If you think that will be...

anything more than interns from the Royals’ PR department lofting anything but pre-screened, softball questions at them, then I’ve got some collateralized mortgage obligations I’d love to sell you.

Also, I wish that Hal was still managing...

if for no other reason than the mere possibility that he might put one of these sorts of rants during the kids’ press conference.

“I’m sick and tired up putting up with all these stupidass questions from you kids at these Fanfests!”

"I am sick and tired of [unintelligible] up with every [BLEEP]ing thing. No [BLEEP] from you guys, no [BLEEP] from you [BLEEP]ing players. And they can do any [BLEEP]ing thing they want to do. I’m sick and tired of all this bull[BLEEP]. Now…put that in your [BLEEP]ing pipe and smoke it."

That's surprising...

maybe I WILL end up going just to try to stir up some good responses from Dayton and Trey.

I went last year

Really seems to be geared more for the kiddies, and since my kid is too young to really understand what is going on, I probably won’t be going. Maybe in a few years.

I'd love a detailed report from someone on one of these things

sounds kinda fun. Chilling with Teahen, stalking Alex Gordon into the bathroom (as described in a Star story a while back)…

I dunno… seems like a pretty good idea to get the kids in the tank, but the adults are the ones with the money (insert line about the New Great Depression).

From last year

I browsed the exhibits which were pretty cool. You can see the 1985 World Series trophy, and they had a few exhibits from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. They also brought in all the division title flags. There was a mini-field kids could play on and a batting cage and a pitching cage with a radar gun. There was a Q&A session with former players, and then Trey Hillman.

There were also tons of lines to get autographs and pictures taken. I didn’t wait in any of the lines.

The OP CC actually seemed too small for the event, I really hope they move it to Bartle Hall soon. It was way too packed last year.

2008 Fan Fest

Was immediately followed by the Bret Tomko signing. I wonder what exciting free agent we’ll bring in after this year’s Fan Fest? Kip Wells? Josh Fogg? Livan Hernandez? An anxious Royals Nation awaits!

I'm going again.

It was pretty cool last year. I mainly am trying to meet Gil Meche this year, lol! & my friend (who is a new Royals fan!) really wanted to go, so that’s another reason I’m going.

I plan on attending on Saturday

Did we perform a photo montage, last year? We should do this again. I’ll provide Royals Review with the always necessary photos from the event.

Considering I’m a Jackson County taxpayer, I’m a little miffed about the 35-minute drive (and additional 15 minutes needed for parking, walking, and waiting in line to attend the event). Oh, well. For what it’s worth, I plan on attending the Friday banquet downtown that is available (I think) to season ticket holders. I’m not a ticketholder myself, but my dad is, so I’m mooching off of him. Aren’t dads great?

well here they are...

FanFest is just four days away, and we have big news to report! You can meet the newest members of the team this weekend at the Overland Park Convention Center. It was just announced that Willie Bloomquist, Coco Crisp, Kyle Farnsworth, and Mike Jacobs will all be in attendance!

They will be selling commemorative little Royals tupperware-type containers. You can just follow Willie around and catch whatever grit falls off of him. He may even autograph them.

I went last year.

It was great and I am going again on Saturday. They are supposed to be doubling the floor space so there might be more to see and do. Got a few autographs last year including Butler, Teahen, and DMGM (who may not be tall enough to ride the ride). It’s a socially acceptable regression into childhood. I think Dayton will be available for questions including…

“Dayton, do you think David Glass will fire you and hire Scott Pioli as your replacement?”

“Dayton, who will the organization designate as the Roving Instructor of Grit for the farm system in 2009?”

“Dayton, about Willie Bloomquist…WTF?” (Get a kid to ask that one)

Feel free to submit your sample questions as well.

instead of a Q&A session, Gload and TPJ get 10 minutes to plead their cases as to why they should be allowed to keep playing baseball?
