Read all about it at Arrowhead Pride. Let's hope he runs the Chiefs as well as Dayton is running the Royals.

Clark must have finally caved on letting Herm go

Wow. I can actually start taking a legitimate interest in the Chiefs again. It’s like the whole Arrowhead complex has been given an enormous enema.

Good hire by the Chiefs

Hello Kirk Ferentz in KC now Iowa will have to look for a new coach

That seems like a solid choice

I really like Tennessee DC Jim Schwartz because I’ve read he’s a stats guy. Just hope they’re the right kind of stats.

Given this quote from Pioli...

courtesy of Upon Further Review (the Star’s newest sports blog), I doubt that Pioli cares much about stats:

“Not to get caught up in the numbers. The things like height, weight and speed. The test numbers. It’s not getting too caught up in numbers. I’ve made mistakes by getting caught up with the workouts. Tom Brady took some heat recently when they showed a video of his running a 40-yard dash. Tommy’s speed and running has nothing to do with his pocket presence. Here is a guy, he has vision. He has the feel. He has the sense. He knows when to step up, so his athleticism is due to his awareness. Ted Bruschi, his instincts are incredible. They’re rare. He plays a lot faster than what his numbers on paper would indicate. Ty Warren’s strength-I remember when Ty was coming out, his overall wasn’t great but he has this brute strength. Wes Welker is another guy. He has enough quickness to get away from folks.”

I personally think this is a great attitude and a good sign. Contrary to MLB, I think far too many front office guys get too caught up in a guy’s 40 time or height/weight as opposed to judging whether or not the guy can play football. So, in other words, when it comes to pro football, I’m more of a grit guy than a stats guy.

i don't disagree

that’s why Brandon Flowers fell to round 2 even though some guys (NFL network draft guy Mike Mayock for one) thought he was the best CB in the draft. Flowers ran his 40 in like 4.5 and he fell because of it.

Pioli and Ferentz have longtime ties

I would be surprised if it wasn’t Spagnola or Ferentz

I'm Hoping for Better

In line with NYRoyals’ recent post and Rany’s recent rant, I’m hoping and expecting Pioli to do better than Dayton.

I don't fight extra players.

that is a huge relief

it will be interesting to see how things shake out at Arrowhead now.

Stats in football doesn't mean nearly as much, IMO.

In baseball, stats can explain the vast, vast majority of everything. In football, with so many moving pieces at all times, and not-that-many one-on-one assignments, I think stats take a significant backseat.

With that said, I’ll take Spagnuolo.

by rockchalk on Jan 13, 2009 11:46 PM EST reply actions

I heard on either 810 or 610 this morning...

that the book on Spagnuolo is that he does NOT interview very well. Which is why he may have been passed over for a few opportunities the last couple years. I could really care less. I highly doubt that Belichick interviews well either. And the Belichick-Pioli combo worked out pretty well over the last several years.

And I don’t think Shanahan would want to get into a situation where the GM had absolute authority over him on personnel judgments. He would have to check some of his consideable ego at the Arrowhead door, and I just DON’T see a guy like The Rat doing that.

too bad

you’d know that KC would win at least 4 games a year against divisional opponents

maybe they should wait for the Chargers to hire and fire Shanahan, too

There's nothing official on Herm yet, which should be concerning

i don't think it'd be the worst thing in the world if Hermy stayed

either way, he has set the foundation for the franchise for a while, especially if Thigpen can be the real deal at QB. and that will be forgotten, which is kind of sad, when the Chiefs turn the ship around (if he’s fired).

They should hire Seitzer

Given Tom Brady and Matt Cassel...

I would say that there’s a 90% that Pioli doesn’t consider Thigpen to be his type of QB.

I also think there’s a 90% chance that Pioli has already made the decision to can Herm at the first opportunity—he’s just trying to be as diplomatic as he can with Clark (BIG Herm fan) to massage an agreement out of him (Clark has said that the only “joint” decision between he and Pioli will be on the hiring/firing of a head coach).

Dunno about Thigpen

I do know that Herm’s good at working with young players….and a terrible gameday manager. Not sure which is more important for the Chefs right now.
