Standing Royals Fan Fest Invitation
Just a quick reminder and a request from the sprawling Royals Review headquarters: to anyone attending this weekend's Royals Fan Fest (FanFest?) I'd love for you to share your stories/pictures/links to your own blog/ etc.
Thank you and have fun.

This is somewhat related
…and, yes, somewhat unrelated. But I attended the Royals Awards Banquet this evening, and it was a very well organized event. I received autographs from (I’ll just list them)
Joakim Soria, Kevin Seitzer, Trey Hillman, Dayton Moore, Zack Greinke, Frank White, Mike Aviles, Jeff Bianchi, Daniel Cortes, Toby Cook
…on one baseball. Not to gloat, haha. I’m offering it for $10,000 to any Royals Review poster who will take it.
I had extended conversations with 610 Sports analyst Greg Schaum (I sat next to him). I also discussed the team at some length with Dayton Moore, and said a few (considerate!) words to Hillman, Greinke, and Daniel Cortes. More on that to come.
I’m looking forward to FanFest tomorrow and Sunday, as I plan on attending both days. I’ll be helping Schaum out for his radio program the day after tomorrow. Yeah, ummm….be there?

I'll just post them here (rather than create an entire FanPost)
Here are some other notes from the event:
To expand upon the above comments, I discussed the Bloomquist signing, a possible push toward signing Andruw Jones, and a couple other topics with Dayton Moore this evening.
- He claims that Bloomquist’s clubhouse character played a significant portion of his acquisition of the former Seattle player. He says that the character will rub off positively on Alex Gordon. Say what you will, folks….., I’m just relaying the information.
I also asked him about a possible pursuit of Andruw Jones, and he said they were comfortable with the current outfield.
I told him I’m excited about players within our farm system on the verge of MLB status, such as Kila Ka’aihue and Carlos Rosa. He agreed with me when I stated Rosa could be a top-flight setup man but admitted health was a concern (“he needs to stay healthy”)
He also seemed positive about his acquisitions Mike Jacobs and Coco Crisp, going out of his way to mention them.
Also, I was holding an autographed baseball, and asked him to sign the baseball. I said that I had been waiting and my fingers were getting tired trying to avoid the ink placed on the now ultra-valuable baseball (because of the players he acquired). He smiled and patted me on the shoulder. That was my comic relief for the evening.
(I wonder if he recognized me as that blogger on Royals Nation and the Royals blogosphere who has practically obsessed over every one of his personnel decisions? Something in me felt that he did…..)
- Also, I received Zack Greinke’s autograph, and mentioned the high tension from his mid-to-late inning outings in 2007. He didn’t really say a word, but just nodded in agreement to what I was saying. (I mentioned that it felt odd asking for an autograph of a player approximately two years older than me).
- I met and talked with Daniel Cortes (Royals #3 Prospect) for awhile. We discussed somewhat briefly his Red Bull commitment from several years ago, and he asked me where I played, or used to play. I told him that I was a pitcher, but nowhere near his caliber (which is why he’s playing for the NWA Naturals and I have a part-time computer hobby).
- Zack Greinke’s girlfriend. Kila Ka’aihue’s wife. Mike Aviles’ fiancee. Wooooowwww.
- Greg Schaum sat next to me the entire evening. We discussed many things at great length. That’s a fairly broad statement, but we made notes throughout the event, talking about the singing (which I felt was unnecessary) and just the event in general.
- I got Trey Hillman’s autograph. He told me that he kept his facial hair the entire offseason. I just wished him a general ‘good luck’ on next season.
- When Soria was signing my autograph, I asked him to write “Joakim. Soria” on the baseball. My obvious (funny) joke of the evening….he laughed.
- I told Frank White “it must be a hard life” after he had continuously tried to leave the building but kept getting hounded for autographs and talking. What a classy guy.
- I met Steve Stewart, Ryan LeFebvre, and saw Mike Sweeney up close at the event, as well. Steve Stewart actually went out of his way to shake my hand.
- I also got Jeff Bianchi’s autograph, and we exchanged a few words. He seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Anyway, those are my (brief) notes from the event.

I think you should
make this a separate FanPost. These are good pieces of information, and more people would probably see them all if this were its own post…

I took the wife and kid on Satureday
I was very dissappointed in Alex Gordon’s attitude. Here is a direct quote:
“I was looking forward to having a relaxing day, until they told me I’d be mic’d up. So now I feel like I have to talk”
Why are the “cornerstones” of the franchise (Gordon, Butler, Greinke) so completely void of an personality what so ever? It’s painful to watch. Butler actually seems like a nice guy, but he is EXTREMELY nervous with a mic in his hand, to the point where he can hardly compose a complete sentence.
I’m only troubled by this, because a great player (the building block of a franchise) is not only a great athlete, but also a relativley well spoken and intelligent person, who can handle themselves in front of the media, and be the face of the franchise.
…unless he hits like Manny or Bonds…
no outs to go!

Obviously
I wasn’t there so you have much better context than I do.
But, a couple of observations.
1. Gordon’s statement you highlight above could simply be him trying to make a little joke but not pulling it off very well. Was it clearly not that way?
2. I wouldn’t fault Butler (as a player) just because he’s nervous to speak in front of a crowd. This is one of the most common and largest fears of many people. I would think performing in front of huge crowds would sort of inoculate a person, but it is actually a different skill.

I agree with #2
I played in front of HUGE crowds (10,000+) but I suck at the spotlight.

keep in mind these guys are jocks, some of whom, like Butler, didn’t even go to university. They can’t all be Brain Bannister.

Agreed
His general attitude was not very good overall. I talked to a couple of people who went through the autograph lines, and they all made comments as to how “annoyed” he seemed that he had to be there. Other players, from KC veterans to the new guys all seemed excited to be there, but Gordon just didn’t look happy at all. Kinda disappointed as well by that, I’m just saying.

Gordon...yeah, I'm pretty sure he hates these things.
I’ve heard many, many stories of him being outright rude to fans, especially people who have Husker stuff they want him to sign.

oh man, I don't want to hear this
not that it’s a big deal. He might just be a shy guy, I dunno
I mean, not that it matters for his future as a player, but I’m still a fan, and want my players to be cool
on the other hand, some people can be really pushy and obnoxious with going for autographs (like the following into the stall thing), so who knows.

maybe they signed Willie B. to fix that

fanfest sucked compared to last year.
oh well, here are the pictures I took:

I hated that each player only signed once. & that they only had 3 people signing at one session. They should of kept it the way it was last year.

I was at FanFest again this year
and I completely agree with kcdoc85’s post. I was watching Gordon on stage when he made that comment and he always seems uninterested in everything. He could barely even find the desire to listen to a 10 second question from the kids who idolize him. I know this sounds like a rip job on Alex but he seems to embody every dumb jock stereotype that exists (which would help explain the Dayton Moore observation found above in a Royals Nation post). The more I see of Alex, the less impressed I become.
Other FanFest nuggets:
1. I think I could take Willie Bloomquist in a fight.
2. Denny Matthews told a fan that Mrs. Kauffman designed the 1985 World Series ring because “she knew a little something about jewelry”.
3. Couldn’t help but notice the smoking hot blond by the batting cage with legs that went on forever. Saw her again later that day…she was Joe Randa’s wife. You still got it, Joker.
I hope to post some pictures from the event soon.

I took my
5 year old, my wife and her sister. We drove up Friday from Tulsa. We were probably one of the first 30 or so in once it opened. I got seperated from my wife and her sister. They went to one autograph area and I said I would go to the other. We never made it. Jupiter Jumps are like crack for my son so we stopped and he bounced around for a while. I noticed a couple of fellows in the road to the show area. Once my son came out we went over and spoke with Cortes and Bianchi. Both were very nice and took a couple of pics with my son and signed his hat. Later in the day we went back over to that area. Teaford and Robinson were over there not really doing to much so we went and took some pics with them, signed the hat,etc.. We didn’t stand in any monster lines as my son didn’t feel like it so we just kind of did all the little kid stuff-wild pitch, tball, etc. We did stand in line once at the picture station-duck,soria and davies were there and they were all really nice with my son. We had a great time. Only went on Saturday but we will come back again next year. Oh my wife one a game used signed Olivo bat!!!

I'll defend him
I’ve heard the “he’s a jerk” thing many times about Gordon but I just don’t think that’s the case. I went to Fanfest last year plus 4 Caravan stops he was at (I’m not a stalker, really :) ). This year I saw him at Hy-Vee in Omaha (an unscheduled appearance for him) as well as at the Omaha Royals luncheon. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to observe his demeanor. He is absolutely golden around people he knows. If you played against him in high school or know somebody he knows he sits there attentively and genuinely seems interested in what you have to say (for the record, neither of those apply to me). His natural inclination is to be shy. He has a really dry sense of humor. When he was being interviewed by Lefebvre at the luncheon he kept looking at his feet while he talked. He’s not comfortable at all speaking in front of a crowd. He said in his interview with Lefebvre that his favorite part of the trip was speaking to kids at schools. Probably the most alarming thing about Gordon is his response to a question posed by a man from Lincoln. He asked if Alex still had trouble with his back since he’d had some problems in high school. Alex responded that most of the strain was caused by playing too many sports without letting his body rest but that he’d learned at UNL the proper ways to strengthen his core. He then said “I still have stress fractures in my back but I feel fine now.” stress fractures, back, Don Mattingly, uh oh
