The Arbitration Guys: Greinke, Teahen, Jacobs, Etc.
I didn't see a post on this:
KANSAS CITY -- Seven Royals, including 13-game winner Zack Greinke and newly acquired slugger Mike Jacobs, filed for salary arbitration on Thursday.
Also filing were pitchers Brian Bannister, Joel Peralta and Jimmy Gobble, catcher John Buck, and outfielder Mark Teahen.
I'm surprised this many guys had to file (i.e. didn't sign before hand). I think the Major League average is about three per team, so this is a pretty hefty total.
I can't wait to see how low Greinke's payout is because he only had 13 pitcher wins!

I don’t think that is a good thing. The last thing the Royals want to do with Zack is get in a courtroom like hearing with him and state why his value is lower than he and his agent believe.

what could possibly go wrong with that scenario?

I never noticed the resemblance Zack has to Jack Nicholson before.
No… really, he does… or maybe YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH.

They likely won't actually go to an arbitration hearing
They are just exchanging numbers and most, if not all, will come to an agreement beforehand for a compromise amount, which is what happened last year. I think the average is more than three per major league team.

Most of the time, the teams seem to settle these
contracts before arbitration. So Yep.

My estimates
Greinke 5M
Jacobs 3.5M
Teahen 3.25M
Buck 3.25M
Gobble 1.75M
Peralta 1M

Greinke 5M – I think it will be more like $7, or these talks will lead to an extension
Jacobs 3.5M
Teahen 3.25M – more like $4 based on non-production #‘s (AB’s, GP) and versatility
Buck 3.25M – I’d think it would be a little lower than that, like 2.5
Gobble 1.75M – OMG, I fuggin hope not, but that is probably a pretty accurate #
Peralta 1M – needs to be released

I don't think 1M is actually that bad for Peralta
but if he can be released and resigned to an MiLB or split-deal, so be it.

That's a great value for Peralta
He’s a pretty good reliever, period.

I think that's about right
I’m not sure I want to live in a world where Jimmy Gobble makes $1.75 million, but we’ll see if he actually ends up making a Major League roster by April.

In order to save money and pay him only 1/6th of that, they'll have to cut him well before April
I don’t know the deadline, but it is something like 30 or 45 days before opening day, I think.

Unfortunately, it is usage based
Gobble only struggled last year against righties. He dominated lefties yet again. If Hillman would use him as a LOOGY, he’d be an asset and flippable in July.

Yes, I know.
Though LOOGYs aren’t worth much anyway, Hillman certainly nerfed what value Gobble had last year.

might as well just say fuck it now and DFA him....
hillman is going to cost us games by not knowing how to use gobble….even fucking buddy bell could figure that out…hell, if i printed the stats out and gave my mom 5 mins to look at them she could see how to use him

The rumours are are $15-17m being Howards proposal
according to Stark. And another Arb year next year… He might up end up taking a BIG paycut when he hits Free Agency, the way his salary is ramping up.

heh
if howard gets 20M, it may be the first time a player straight up get overpaid in arb. vs. the FA market. Wouldn’t it? I mean, based on what we expect form him, not counting guys who got hurt, or mysteriously just started to suck

Great point.
Bill James in his abstracts used to wonder if teams wouldn’t just use their potential free agents like disposable labor and not care if they blew up their arms. Instead, most teams have babied their pitchers along as if they still own them forever. Maybe the cynical but efficient way to operate is the Billy Martin A’s of the 100 complete games a year.

that seems like a good way to get scott boras to take...
