From the Anti-"Mother's Basement" Royals Blog, now less than 24 hours old ~RN
http://haplessroyals.blogspot.com/
--------------
But there is a dark side. The side of the internet I want to systematically destroy. The holier than thou, I know everything about baseball, Baseball Prospectus followers (otherwise known as "Mom's Basement"). Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the website. Why is that you ask? Because they fucking charge for it! And I'm not about to pay for some shit that their mindless lemmings will post REPEATEDLY on every blog, forum and whatnot on the internet. You know who you are. The guy that goes into the forum and posts EVERY made up stat known to nerdly mankind. WARP, VORP, WHIP, BABIP, and every other weirdo stat that website has brainwashed into your daily lexicon. I don't even know what half of that shit means. But here's what I do know. YOU, yes YOU, Mom's Basement, are NOT Royals fans. You're not even baseball fans. You're STAT fans. You don't care if Jose Guillen hit 20 hrs and 90 rbis last year, something that no other Royals had done in longer that most people care to admit. All you care about is that his FRUP isn't up to VORP standards. You don't care that Mark Teahen gives more to the community of Kansas City than anyone else not named Frank White. All you care about is that he isn't the moneyball fanboy you all pegged him to be after reading that ridiculous book a few years ago. And so on and so on.
My point is, give it up. Stop pushing your stupid fucking opinions on everyone else. Just because you're a moderator or administrator of a fucking Royals website does not mean you're not a scrawny little man in real life. Everyone hates you, both on the interwebs and in real life, although you hardly notice in real life because for that to happen, you know, you'd have to put on some clothes and leave your fucking desk. But make sure you ask Mom for permission to leave the house. She still worries about you even though you're 30 and still living at home. Oops, I'm sorry I forgot, you moved into your own apartment. But, uh, guy, your Mom's basement, even if it has its own entrance is still Mom's house.

Actually
given the Guillen’s “quality,” as well as human interest references, and, above all, the Mom’s Basement thing, I’d say the most likely culprit is a bitter, unemployed Jeffrey Flanagan.

I had the same exact thought about five minutes into reading his more recent posts. I’m still honestly trying to figure out if this guy is for real. I have no doubt there are people out there that are this obscene, thickheaded, and overall ridiculous, but it just seems so over-the-top and forced that I’m tempted to think he’s doing it all on purpose just get under people’s skin.

Wow, insecure, much?
It really pisses me off when people try to tell me that I must hate baseball because I happen to like numbers. I happen to LOVE baseball very much. I get very emotional about it; the Royals’ performance dictates my mood, I get attached to players for all kinds of reasons – statistical or personal or whatever. Just because I occasionally descend from that cloud of emotion for my team does not mean I have no heart.
This guy’s own ignorance and insecurity must be terribly hard to live with.
WTF, self?

Although I would disagree with much of the content
I find this blog hilarious and entertaining. Differing opinions can be so, which is why I watch Bill O’Reilly from time to time.
I actually kind of hope this blog lasts longer than my notoriously short-lived “Retaining The Core” blog, which lasted but several weeks. (Revisionist history —→ I quickly realized that Dayton Moore was not and would never read my blog, hence the fact that 6 months later, not one Royal has been ‘retained.’ ……….sigh)

Question:
Is the Royals fan internet community more stat-oriented than other teams?
It kind of seems that way to me, but I don’t really have a good gauge for it.
by raefzilla on Jan 17, 2009 5:26 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I don't know, I don't follow much else
my general impression is that the SBNation boards are pretty stat-oriented in general
The Mariners internet people are very informed, and out of that group came Stat Corner
Athletics Nation is pretty stat-oriented, as you’d expect
but I don’t follow that stuff much
I think Halos Heaven might stand out as pretty anti-sabermetric, although, ironically, Seean “CHONE” Smith is an Angels fan…

I think the Royals internet community is fairly small
and by coincidence many of the big sites/blogs/people leaned staty
I think overall, most fans online are fairly similar I’d say
by royalsreview on Jan 17, 2009 7:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
There is quite a polarization in the Royals fanbase, it seems
Internet community (10-15) = largely sabermetric, pro-stat
General/casual fanbase (85-90) = rigidly blue-collar (anti-sabermetric or apathetic to advanced stats)
Franchises like the Mariners, Red Sox, and A’s would probably hold a larger saber-influenced fanbase, b/c of the way their franchises are run. I’m probably generalizing, here, but coastal cities, I think, would be more saber….while midwestern or blue collar regions (Midwest, Great Lakes) would be more traditional. I dunno.
by Royals Nation on Jan 18, 2009 11:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I have a question
Why is anyone “anti-sabermetric”? I guess I can understand apathy to advanced stats, sabermetrics, new research and questioning traditional baseball orthodoxy. But why be against those things? That’s what I don’t get about his “hapless” guy. He isn’t just a traditionalist who isn’t interested in looking into VORP and other advanced metrics, which would be fine. He thinks that these things are awful, hurting baseball and those who know them are not real baseball fans. What is the source of this oddly intense negative sentiment? I wish he explained it on his blog. Instead, he basically said, “I don’t like those people; they suck.”

But he’s for real. There are sooooooooooo many fans that think that way. “Don’t bother me with your new, made up stats like WHIP. That’s stupid. All you need to know is Avg, BA, HR and RBI. The rest is just nerdy bullshit.” I will guarantee you that this guy is 100% the genuine article. And, for some reason, many of them hate fans who talk about stats they don’t understand or look at the game in a somewhat different way. This guy just took it one step further and created his own blog to celebrate his ignorance and hatred. Actually, I guess that’s pretty common on the internet.

Something very stupid and I'm sure unsabermetric but just a quick look at RBI conversions
HR-RBi / Actual Runners on Base
DDJ 61 / 284 21.5%
JoGui 77 / 438 17.6%
BamBam 44 / 275 16%
Aviles 41 / 265 15.5%
Buck 39 / 274 14.2%
Olivo 29 / 210 13.8%
Alex 43 /340 12.6%
Callaspo 16 /129 12.4%
Teahen 44 /380 11.6%
Grudz 21 / 189 11.1%
Obviously this doesn’t show a big picture of who was up with the most guys on second and third increasing their probability of scoring. Just thought it was interesting to look at.
Form of reference
ManRam 17.9%
Teix 17.5%
Jeter 15.3%
Dunn 14.7%
Eckstein 11.3%

Right, but...
Does this “context-sensitive hitting” analysis look at multiple years? Because if one sees that Player X was great at context-sensitive hitting in 2008, that could easily lead one to conclude that Player X has a certain repeatable skill with regard to hitting in certain contexts.

Re: success with ROB
Power, it seems, obviously helps. Didn’t Guillen have a .180 or so ISO last year? Well, that’s probably not too far from average, but considering his OBP was around .300….
Still, and admittedly negating RISP…..438 runners on base in front of him for the year? It makes those RBI arguments even more unbased and ridiculous.

Scouting, traditional principles, stats, sabermetrics, games theory, econometrics and much more. Acting like any of them is valueless, pointless, stupid or hurt the game is the real stupidity.

As the poet said, challenging someone's fundamental assumptions and beliefs is "a walk on a slippery rock"
Most people don’t like what they’ve long believed in to be challenged. They’ve been told from youth that a good hitter has a .300 BA and 100 RBI, and that a leadoff hitter has to be speedy and a good pitcher needs a low ERA. They’ve been told that a smart team sac bunts and sacrifices runs, and that veteran leadership wins championships. Challenging that is challenging their fundamental understanding of the game they love.
Some historians and sociologists have argued that in the 20th (and now 21st century) organized sports took over many of the social, spiritual and personal functions of organized religion. This is true at least to some degree. And you don’t go telling a Christian that Jesus didn’t really die for their sins. It isn’t up for debate. And you can’t tell some people that knocking in 100 runs doesn’t tell you much at all about how good of a hitter a player is.

Willfully ignorant people make me sad
Strive to be a better fan. I know you can do it.

I can be whatever kind of fan I choose to be
Whether you like it or not, I CHOOSE to disagree with your way of looking at baseball.
Maybe you should re-read my blog starting with this sentance:

Disagreeing with me is cool
Yeah, I read that "sentance" and many others. Does knowing stats make me scrawny? That seems like particularly odd illogic. Apparently you can be whatever kind of fan you choose to be, but if I choose to be the kind of fan that knows advanced stats, then I’m not a really a baseball fan at all. Actually, knowing more about baseball is a good thing. You should look into it, but I know you won’t. And then you’ll insult those who do. Very odd.

Knowing
every possible baseball stat does not make you a fan. What makes a fan is Loving your team through thick and thin, crying when they lose a heartbreaking extra innings affair, flying halfway across the country just to see them, talking about hem to total strangers who couldn’t care any less, and enjoying it for what it is. Not overanalyzing every move they make, acting like you’re smarter than the front office, and being generally annoying to all around you.

No, knowing stats doesn’t make you a fan. But you can be a fan and also know stats. And I do live and die with the Royals. People who know advanced stats are fans too. They love their team and hope for the best and bad losses feel like a gut shot to them, just as they do to you. And I think it is pretty common for fans who really love their team and desperately want them to do well to analyze and perhaps even overanalyze their team, their players, their manager, their GM and their team’s various transactions.
Do you think that “real fans” don’t analyze their team and critique their players, managers and front office? Because if doing that makes you not a fan, then that excludes about 95% of sports fans across the country.
So you can be a fan who knows a little, or a lot, or who knows about traditional baseball principles, or new research, or stats or whatever. All of those things can be a part of what fans know, or not. The amount, degree and nature of the knowledge you have isn’t what makes you a fan or not. In short, your way of being a fan isn’t the only way to be a fan.

And neither is yours. I choose to rant about people like you because your kind chooses to talk down to people. 99% of the time on any baseball website I go to, if someone happens to not know what EQA or BABIP is, they are mocked and made to feel inferior. So I’m simply switching gears and turning the tables. You can ban me from here all you want and give me your little warnings, but it’ll only fuel my fire on my blog. Enjoy!

Unlike you, I don’t claim that fans who are different from me “aren’t even baseball fans.” I don’t delegitimize them. I discuss and debate with them.

That’s unfortunate, if true. If I’m talking about a stat and someone isn’t familiar with it, I’m happy to explain it. Ten years ago I didn’t know more than the stats on the back of a baseball card. And right now there are many advanced metrics I’m not familiar with and would have to have explained to me. I think part of what we do here is learn from each other. I learn from the statheads and the more traditional tools-based fans, and the prospect guys on a regular basis.
Is that what this is really about? You were on some website and you felt inferior because people were talking about stats you didn’t understand and now you’re lashing out against those who know more than you? Is that what all of these hate-filled rants come from? Could it really be that sad?
And, by the way, my little warnings are about your little insults. On your blog, you can be as offensive as you want. More power to you. But around here, you play by our rules or you don’t play at all.
