In defense of Gordon...

Even though it was far below zero, I decided to go down to Des Moines and see the Royals Caravan when it was at the West Des Moines HyVee.  It was cold as hell out but that didn't stop some diehard Royals fans from coming out to see the players.  It was not a big turnout and I thought it would be canceled.  For some unknown reason HyVee stuck the Royal's table up front of the store by the doors so everytime they opened the Royals got a blast of Iowa winter in their faces.  I was in line about 20 minutes and got Gordon's signature and even got to talk to him for a litte while.  He was pleasant enough and we talked about Nebraska and the College World Series.  He said he felt better about this year's team but said that the division improved and would be tougher this year.  After that I went into the cafe for coffee.  When I came out Gordon was laughing and joking with three boys about 9 or 10 years old and their dad.  He signed each kids poster, their hats, and the one kid's Gordon jersey.  About 30 minutes later they packed up and headed south.

From what I saw if he were going to be the usual jock asshole that would have been the perfect time to do it.  Anyone who travels in weather like that and gets blasted by the cold for several hours to sign a few autographs is okay in my book.

it is ok with me if he doesn’t glad hand that much. I think it can be a skill that can be developed.

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.

The TV station said that it looked like about 200 people

went by the table in the four hours that the Royals were here. I think that is pretty good considering the weather that day. I think there are quite a few Royal fans in Des Moines and into Southwestern Iowa. There probably would be more if we got the games on FSN instead of the Cards. Des Moines is about halfway between the Royals and the Twins. I see a lot of Royal stuff at the ICUBS games. Go figure…only in Iowa.
