OT: Best Steakhouse in KC
What's up royals fans! Question to all you steak eaters out there. Every year, my Dad, in Los Angeles, and Myself, in Tampa, fly into a different city to watch a Texas Rangers play a team. It allows us to check out different stadiums and cities.
Last year, for the yankees last year in the stadium, we went there and ate at a steakhouse called, Peter Lugers. This has been to date, the best we've been too in the country.
I've heard KC has some outstanding steakhouses, and would really appreciate any feedback you have on places within a 30 mile radius of the stadium that you recommend we try out this year, as we have chosen to come to a Royal game this year.
Thanks in advance!
-Mike

Personally,
I think you should alter your plans and eat at one of the fine BBQ establishments instead.
KC does have some good steakhouses, but is MUCH more famous for it’s BBQ than anything else. Only Memphis and some parts of Texas can match KC BBQ, IMHO.
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

KC’s steakhouses were among the best (jeez, I’m old), but BBQ has taken over this town.
I recommend: Gates, Oklahoma Joe’s, Arthur Bryant’s, in that order.

I like Hereford House
But the downtown one just burned down. I like Pierpont’s in Union Station too, and they’re owned by the same restaurant group.
Morton’s is pretty good, and they’re closing soon so you may want to get them while you can.
Plaza III and Capitol Grille are supposedly the best in KC, but I’ve never been to either. Benton’s in Crown Center has a great view, but I’ve never had their steak.

To PIerponts and Capitol Grille. Those are by far my favorite place to get a world class porterhouse steak if thats what you’re looking for.
as for bbq, my personal fav is jack steak in martin city, but all locations are good.

These are all great - Please keep them coming!
Gates sounds like it’ll be put on the menu for a dinner – and the steakhouse is still up in the air.
Plaza III – how far is this from the sadium?
Benton’s in the Westin – how far from the stadium as well?
Ya....That's Real Mature.

Plaza III
Is on the Country Club Plaza. So is Capitol Grille and Ruth Criss Steakhouse.
Benton’s Steakhouse is at Crown Center as is Morton’s and Pierpont’s.
All are about ten minutes west of the Stadiums.

You're not likely to top Peter Luger's
in this town, but Plaza III and the Capitol Grille are darn fine eateries.

You ever been to Jess & Jim's Steak House
In Martin City? They say they have a 30oz porterhouse…..damn!

jess & jim's is decent,
but Martin City is a dump and not worth the drive. You should go to the plaza area so you get a little more than just somewhere to eat. Plaza III is pretty good. Or head over to Pierponts; it’s really good as well. I dig the Majestic if you’re downtown – live jazz while you eat. The place is kind of rundown though. But you could then go to the Power & Light District. There are a few newer restaurants at the P&L that are pretty good.
I almost always stop and get some Arthur Bryants BBQ on the way to the stadium.
Enjoy your trip, that’s a cool thing to do with your pops!

Speaking of the Power and Light District
I’ve heard 801 Chophouse is really good. Its a Des Moines-based chain.

visiting KC pretty much requires a visit to BBQ
My recommendations: Gates, Hayward’s, Jack Stack, Arthur Bryant’s, in that order.
As far as steakhouses go, I really like J. Gilbert’s in Overland Park (partly out of convenience, since I grew up relatively nearby, but it is a bit of a drive down I-435 from the stadium), but Hereford House is really good too. Ruth Chris is good, but can be found many places outside of KC.

J. Gilbert's is pretty amazing
I just visited the Web site for the first time and was surprised to learn it’s a chain of sorts, albeit with only four locations.
Also, I’m really pleased with how Kansas City pizza has improved in quality recently, so I’ll recommend a few of my favorites in that department: Spin (Overland Park), Foundry (Westport), Grinder’s (downtown), Sutera’s (newish location at 47th and Rainbow, near midtown), D’Bronx (39th St, midtown).
by andrewmiller on Jan 23, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
I’ll add Pizza Bella (Crossroads), Waldo Pizza (65th and Wornall), Blue Grotto (Brookside)
Grinder’s is just about good for everything. Very cool place.

D'Bronx is great pizza
I was thrilled when they opened up a branch in Overland Park (I had moved away by that point, but it was pretty convenient when I was home for holidays). Spin is great as well.
Also in OP is George’s, which makes St. Louis-style pizza. And the only good thing I’ll ever say about St. Louis (aside from having some amazing Italian restaurants) is that they do know how to make pizza.
Retro is right on about Waldo Pizza, too.

I love me some Waldo's PIzza in addition
Haven’t had most of the others though, I’ll have to check them out.

what about the Golden Ox?
that’s still around, right? It used to be really good, I know. Also, it’s by the old stockyards, so there’s some history there (and the shell of Kemper Arena).
by mikewormdog on Jan 23, 2009 6:36 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
A shell of its former self.
My parents and grandparents reminisce about the old Golden Ox. It was apparently quite the place. (50s to 70s I’m guessing)
I really don’t like having to go to the West Bottoms for any reason whatsoever, although Blades games int he 90s were kinda charming in a run down way.

okay
Golden Ox is great, and a good location if you are staying downtown. Nothing else is near it though. Jess n Jims is awesome, but not near anything else you will probably be doing in KC. Any of the recommendations on the plaza are probably a pretty good bet, like Plaza III and Capitol/al Grille. I saw a special on Lugers, and I agree that I do not know if you will be able to beat that…..mmmmmmmmm aged steak.
Everyone else is correct though that you should really be getting bbq. Each person has their favorites, and will would be delighted to share, as they really are the best.
1. Gates. I grew up eating a lot of gates and it is still my favorite. Beef on Bun or Burnt End on Bun. They have the best sauce in the city. It is thin and very tasty. Some feel it is spicy, but what they mean to say is perfect. Good prices and good fries and beans. They have many locations, one on 40 highway near the stadium, as well as Linwood and Main. Ok, they also sell Gates at the Stadium which is convenient……BUT you must really go and get the experience at a real location. You really, really, should.
2. The Original Smokestack at 89th and Wornall. Not out of the way and simply unbelievable. The best burnt ends in the city. Top 2 beans in the city (they put chunks of burnt ends in their beans). My second favorite sauce, it is smooth and rich and tasty.
Those two are the best in my opinion. Other very good options are: LCs BBQ. It is on Blue Pkwy near the stadium. One of a kind. Expensive, but massive meals. Beef involves lots of meat and three slices of bread. Their sauce is kind of gritty, like Bryants. I also like Wyandot BBQ. They have a location in Wyandotte, but it is far away. Their other location at 75th and Metcalf is a better option. You get a lot for your money here. Cheap and really good. Arthur Bryants is also very good, I think it is around 13th and…..i don’t know. east side of downtown if i remember right.
I know this is more information than you needed, but I love kc food, specifically bbq, alot. I have lived here all my life and I moved in across the street from a bbq place that I eat at way too much. Go Royals.

Doesn't Bryant's still have a location
at the Ameristar? That’s only a few miles from the stadium. Not to mention, it’s at a casino.
I just got back from your mom's basement.

I love Wyandot BBQ
Best fries I’ve ever had anywhere. The beef is OK. MY PERSONAL all time favorite sauce is Wyandots. It is similar to Gates Spicy sauce. yum.

A couple other suggestions...
if you’re not necessarily looking for a great steak or BBQ, but just some of the best food that KC has to offer.
1. 1924 Main – It’s pretty easy to figure out where this is by the name. It’s a prix fixe (fixed price) restaurant with a menu that changes weekly. You get a three course dinner where you get to pick among 4-5 choices for each course…all for about $40. The food is absolutely amazing, and I have to say I’ve never gotten anything that I didn’t love. They often have some sort of steak as the main course. I just got back from dinner there tonight, actually (fiance’s birthday dinner). Ask for a Rieger cocktail (a signature drink named after the Hotel Rieger that used to occupy the space). Smoothest bourbon-based cocktail you’ll ever have.
2. Michael Smith – Newer place right at 19th and Main. Last time I went, I had the Eight-Hour Pork Roast. The most succulent, incredible meat (steak or otherwise) I’ve ever had in my life. You should not be disappointed. Very cool dining area, too.
"Now…put that in your [BLEEP]ing pipe and smoke it."
I'm puffing away, Hal.

Plaza III
seems to be the way I’m headed right now for a steak dinner. Gate’s BBQ at the stadium. Benton’s for the Sunday Brunch. And Bryants for another lunch….and some gambling, since you say its at a casino.
Thank you all for the help! If anyone needs advice on great places in Tampa, San Diego, Los Angeles, or Maryland – let me know. I travel a ton for business, and seek out only the best of each city.
Good luck this season guys! Go Rangers!

Plaza III is the best
as far as steakhouses go, & it is not close! BBQ is a personal taste thing-it is cool to try the different styles of sauces here and different styles of places.
Gates & Bryants offer a spicy slightly spicy sauce with alot of celery salt in it. It is a BBQ flavor that is unique to KC. They have a fairly unique inner city, yet down home atmosphere. Sandwiches at Bryants are an experience simply because of their size.
Oklahoma Joes has a variety of sauces & a country atmosphere.
If you are looking to give them an experience at a KC BBQ joint, I would choose Bryants. If you are looking to take them to a great BBQ restaurant -Sorry, guys, Jackstack is hands down the best. Hey the atmosphere isn’t what it was when I was a kid. (Since branching off and changing the name to Jackstack, he has gussied it up a bit ) But It is still the same great menu items they started with along with several fancier things that are a little unique. The beans are the best in the U.S.! The sauce is a little sweeter but still has some spice and that is where personal taste kicks in. I love the atmosphere at Gate’s and Bryants, but the sauce has too much celery and not enough molasses.
by KHAZAD on Jan 25, 2009 3:57 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
The best of both worlds
is the old Smokestack(precursor to Jackstack) on wornall and 89th. You can get the down home and the flavor!

I love almost all BBQ so maybe I'm not discerning enough, but
along with the places mentioned above I also like Danny Edward’s on the Boulevard. It was on Grand for years but was displaced by the P and L District development. It is very, very good. Also the BBQ and live Blues at BB’s Lawnside BBQ is worth the trip to 85th and Troost. IMHO……bon appetit.

Great Plains Cattle Co.
Anyone tried them out before? It’s also inside of ameristar casino, about 30 yards from Aurthur Bryants I believe. Amazing appetizers and entrees. Pretty pricey but a very tasty meal. As for BBQ Aurthur Bryants on Brooklyn I believe, and Gates are my personal favorites (this coming from a former Zarda BBQ employee)
