Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

"They jumped in the hot tub and played ping pong and card games. They were here about 3 1/2 hours after the workout was over," Hillman said. "That's what I wanted it to be -- laid back -- and they felt comfortable being at our home and we got enough work in. And everybody seemed to enjoy themselves."

“They jumped in the hot tub and played beer pong and strip poker. They were here about 3 1/2 hours after the ass kissing was over,” Hillman said. “That’s what I wanted to be — laid back — and felt and comfortable. Being at our home and we got enough work in. And everybody seemed to enjoy themselves.”

That's disturbingly funny.

Trey also really liked the lower half body movement of Bloomy. Wonder who Kaegel thinks deserves the merit badges and what exactly for.

At worst, this was...

…perfectly harmless. At best, it could be a nice development in trust and communication—-the dreaded incalculable C-word. I think it’s great to see Hillman trying to develop more comraderie. I hope it translates into wins via better coaching and listening.

As for the homoerotic comments above, well, that says more about the commentators than the team. – TL

what I mean is we have gotten better

When GMDM took over we started improving… and we still are! He’s done his job so far so why are we complaining acting like we aren’t going to be decent….

How many of those picks were not reaches is a better question?

2000- Stodolka was a reach and picked for buget purposes
2001- Colt – Risky pick big upside low floor
2002- Greinke- Cha Ching
2003-Lubanski- See Stodolka
2004 Butler- It’s worked decent but he was a reach that they underpaid for the spot
2005 Gordon- There probably would’ve been a riot in the streets if Glass would’ve passed on Alex
2006- Hochevar- Paid good money to get a good talent
2007 Moose –
2008 Hosmer – Last four years paid good money to get talented players.

While Hoch and Gordon haven’t performed exactly how we wanted is more of a case of lofty expectations. For them to reach the bigs in less than two years and perform capably thus far is all that one can expect out of a first round pick.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

I never thought something like this would happen to me, but........

This sounds more homo erotic than Top Gun…….actually, glad to see the fellas doing a little team building. Wonder if Hillman put on the Grand Dragon garb and burned a flag? I suppose there are legit excuses for the Latinos not being in attendance, but the select attendance raises some questions about Hillmans ability to perceive clubhouse politics,,,,to whatever extent those are valid in the big scheme of things.

When the Camp Hillman idea...

…was initially reported, I recall that some of the Latin players were invited but declined. I mean, travel by itself is a pretty valid excuse for not coming when ST is only one month away. – TL

by timlacy on Jan 24, 2009 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

ture but most latin players isolate themselves

according to all my buddies who play pro ball (at various levels) most latin guys despise the us kids because they’ve had it “so easy” in life.

I love sweeping generalizations

I guess you also heard that Mark Teahen was a loner at this minicamp, cos he’s Canadian and we all know they don’t do fun.

I've witnessed it first hand

I’ve played with Latin guys, I said most do that.

Guys that have made it farther than me say the same.

If it's true that they "isolate" themselves

I would suspect it is simply the result of culture differences, being in a “strange land”, and gathering together with those similar to themselves. We all do that.

highlights of people

diving headfirst into bases and running into walls in the outfield. I’d imagine it is a whole lot of Pete Rose.

Holy crap

I can maybe see card games in the hot tub, but ping pong? I’m impressed. Maybe our defense really will improve this season.

ping pong is more an improver of offense than defense. Let’s hope!

PORCUS!

I guess someone from our family had to post while I abandoned the Internet. As for the winter… it was significantly warmer in DC, Pittsburgh, and Chicago the last 2 days than it was in Lincoln when I finally got back. I thought those were all supposed to be “cold” places?

WTF, self?

i was just thinking

seeing as Adam is a pretty decent player, and Andy was well…pretty bad last year. wouldn’t that just be really, really awkward for both of them? especially if Andy never really develops while he’s there?

Founder of the Johnny Giavotella fan club.

by doublestix on Jan 25, 2009 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

funny, that's actually gone through my head a couple times, too

I guess we should ask the Weaver brothers… didn’t Jeff get cut by the Angels because Jered made the rotation during the season?

And wasn’t that the year Jeff pitched for the Cards and they won the Series.

And what was going on with Andy in LA, anyway? Wouldn’t tjhey just call him up for a while and not play him.

I think Adam is a pretty decent player. Not a world-beater, but he’s about average as a hitter and defender for a 1B. I guess I always thought he would be a little more than that — not a star or anything, but more than just an average guy. I kinda think he represents Gordon’s reasonable downside (leaving unlikely nightmare scenarios out). Worthwhile average 1B. No great shakes, but you can wn with him.

do you think the rays were all gathering in joe maddon’s hot tub? red sox? twins? angels? yanks? braves? mets?

These are professionals, there should be absolutely no need to travel to texas to take ground balls

It wasn't about taking GB's

It was about learning to trust your teammates and getting to know everyone and share common goals and prepare for ST…. I love that they did this…

Its just like the chiefs, why have a mini-camp? It’s just running through plays….

(I know there is more than this, but this is the perfect example)

That's why we play the season on paper.

Talking to the brick wall

It’s a step that Trey took to make the team better.

Who are you to question a MLB manager? Who are you? (Just ask Pedro) You are a nobody when it comes to MLB and so am I. I didn’t make it. I got so close and now here I am a Royals fan who eats, lives, and breathes baseball. We are nobody’s even if we did make the show. Because we aren’t there now and Trey isn’t calling you to make the team better. So let’s just trust management that they are trying to take this team to a new level and when they feel this may help, who are you? Karim Garcia?

That's why we play the season on paper.

by 306008 on Jan 26, 2009 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

and if was really about trust and getting to know everyone...

and all that such nonsense, then where were the other 20 players?

Jogui’s got all that under control already?

I heard afterwards

They all got orange slices and Shasta! Then they drove on Trey’s go-kart track and played laser tag!
