Interesting comp to Greinke contract- U. Jimenez signs
One day after the Royals signed Greinke, the Rockies locked up Ubaldo Jimenez to a 4 year deal of their own that:
"...guarantees $10 million, with club options for 2013 and '14 that could bring his total earnings to $22 million...He will receive $750,000 in 2009, $1.25 million in 2010, $2.8 million in 2011 and $4.2 million in 2012. The club options are for $5.75 million in 2013 and $8 million in 2014. There is a $1 million buyout on the options. "

Not bad
This would seem to be a pretty good gamble by the Rockies on a guy with what seems like a lot of upside (control issues aside). Nice deal.

without really knowing much about the player
committing 10 mil to young power pitchers with control issues is a concern, but this seems like it could have a huge payoff if he can maintain sub-4 ERAs in Coors. good deal for the rockies

looks fairly luck neutral
ground ball heavy should play well in Coors

he'd get $50 million on the open market
undoubtedly

ya because he compares to Greinke
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

But you fail to believe Greinke wouldn't even get 15 million
because he would get 20

He's five years from free agency?
The Rockies are taking a risk locking in early and only gaining one additional year of control, but overall looks like a steal at that price.

Only 1.1 years of service time (per Cot's)
Denver Post:
The deal buys out his first two arbitration years, and gives the Rockies a chance to control him in his final arbitration season and first year of free agency.

I heard a report that it
only gives them an option on one year of FA.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

He'll end up being a Kyle Farnsworth type. :)
That's why we play the season on paper.
