Benny Santiago was a Royal Five Years Ago

He hit .274/.312/.434 in 49 games in 2004 as a 39 year old catcher. In what would turn out to be his final game, he went 1-2 with a three-run homer in the first inning. The Royals won the game 10-1 behind Chris George.

After the season, he was traded to the Pirates for Leo Nunez.

He should unretire

That line would make him a star in the current cesspit that is Major League Catching.

Fondly remembered out here for his Giants years.

Any regular listener of KNBR in San Francisco over the first half of this decade has no doubt heard Duane Kuiper’s call of his homerun in this game over and over and over again. A home run call that people still blog about, years afterward.

So we traded Santiago for Jacobs?

This offseason just keeps getting worse!!!

essentially

we got 159 innings of slightly below average pitching and whatever Jacobs does for nothing besides their salaries.

I’d take that trade again.

Pecota, watch over us.

Well, that is the oddest justification I've ever read for the Jacobs trade.

When Nunez pitched for us in his first two years, he was clearly poor because he was rushed up to the big leagues. He had really rounded into form in these last two years. So to look at what he did give us and not what he will probably do for the rest of his career to justify the awful Jacobs trade is kind of silly.

I never thought it was a great acquisition

and the steroids allegations didn’t help. I think Jacobs for Santiago is a good tradeoff.

Now if we could just get a decent reliever out of the deal...

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

I followed the mlb.com Royals board at the time

and a large subset absolutely hated him because he wouldn’t put up a target for the pitcher to throw to. As if that would magically solve all of the pitching woes.

Pitchers need a good target to throw to

They taught me that in little league, so it must be true.
