OT: What did you get for Christmas?

Did Santa come through for you this Christmas?  Did that special someone in your life deliver with presents?  Or, did you end up with a tie, sweater, or socks?

Santa (me) splurged this Christmas and replaced my computer, stove, and refridgerator.  They said consumers should spend and I took advantage of some very good sale prices.  My kids and grandkids surprised me with upgrades to my newly purchased computer.  I now have an huge flat screen monitor to save my aging eyes and the maximum memory to let me make mistakes at warped speed.  Oh, and I now have a turtle compliments of my 6 year old grandson.  We named him Buddy, because he eats things one at a time just like his namesake Mr. Bell.  I think there is a strong family resemblance.

Nice.

My grandma gave my wife and I 390 shares of Merck stock. Her and my (passed away) grandpa worked there for 50 years each and got stock options. It’s now up $7.00 since the transfer making me a lot of cash! :)

Thanks grandma!

I bought Merck a long time ago, sold it when it went below 35

good for you to get in at a low point ( let’s hope so, at least!).

Weekend in Vegas

… wife got me tickets to the Vegas Bowl to watch the Arizona. Every bowl game should be in Vegas. The only problem is we played BYU and they just aren’t into getting the most out of Sin City.

Agreed

Only three cities should ever host bowl games/Super Bowl – New Orleans, Las Vegas and Miami.

I got a couple geeky baseball presents

“The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball,” by Tango, Lichtman and Dolphin
“Fielding Bible – Volume II,” by Dewan (pre-ordered)

Other than that, I got less interesting stuff. For both me and my wife, most of our Christmas list to other people was stuff for our impending baby.

We don't know if it is going to be a boy or girl yet (should know in a couple weeks)

But I’ve decided to name the kid “Coco” regardless.

Well, the baby isn't due until June

Maybe Farnsy can blow me away in the first two months with his dominance and I can name my child “Kylie” or “Douchebag” in his honor.

Congrats on the forthcoming wee one

There’s nothing wrong with giving your kids sports names. Of course, if I ever have daughters, they will hate me for giving them boy names, but whatever.

WTF, self?

Thanks to everyone for the congratulations

I’m definitely going to teach him/her all about advanced baseball metrics. I predict s/he will hate me by age 3. BTW, my wife is pushing back on “Coco,” so we might have some name drama. Maybe Zack, Joakim, or Gil (or the feminine versions thereof).

For our son

I did push for “Amos Otis” and I was only half-kidding.

This is a long story,

but good. I met one of my ex-girlfriend’s dad’s friends (while we were dating…don’t really care about her dad’s friends anymore…)

Anyways, he introduced my to his boy, whose middle name was George…after George Brett. It was a nice gesture to tell me this as I was a known Royals fans in Cards country. So, the first thing that pops into my head is that my mom had told me a couple weeks earlier that her friend dated Brett (in the 70’s), and that he was, well, Callaspo like? Shall we say?

So, I forced myself to think, do not say this, do not say this, do not say this.

So I said it. Yeah.

A laptop!

My old computer died in October, and my rockstar family decided to band together and surprise me with a laptop. And they let me start using it in November instead of waiting until Christmas, which was also nice. We don’t usually do big presents, so the computer was a huge surprise.

Also, a fancy rosary. Not that I was coveting my neighbors’ rosaries or anything, but I had noticed that I didn’t have a nice one. [/Catholic geekiness]

And possibly a new job…* fingers crossed *

Just two gifts

My family did “Secret Santa”, and I got a gift certificate to Borders Bookstore, which is just what I wanted.

My wife got me “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, “Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Vol.3” and “The KU 2008 Championship DVD”, which were all on my Amazon wish list, so she is one smart cookie.

And a very quick read. I don’t think Gladlwell is any kind of serious sociologist, but his books are amusing, interesting and at least get the conversation started.

Great Christmas

The wife and I splurged and bought each other half season tickets!! We cannot wait! Section 234 just to the first base side of home plate. Then, Santa surprised us (me) with a legacy brick for the wife and I to be placed at the newly renovated statium! Pretty clever inscription too, I think… “Believing since 1979.” I cannot wait for opening day 2009… hell, I can’t wait for spring training 2009…

If I wasn’t so shitty at computer stuff, I’d post a picture of it here.

No, no , no I, am the most tech challenged on this site

I still write letters on my Royal typewriter and play LP’s on a turntable. I’ve actually wanted to do a FANSHOT but have failed am afraid of the repercussions in the cyberworld if I f*ck it up. I admire the sh*t out of you guys who find this so easy.

by Steve Hovley on Jan 5, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

It's all trial and error

You wade in (or dive in), make some mistakes, learn from them and eventually you can use the piece of technology. Fanshots aren’t too tough. I’ve made my share of formatting errors, but such is life.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Jan 5, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah Steve, you can do it.

People mess up formatting all the time when trying to post pics, quote other people, etc. We all do it, so we forgive, instruct if necessary, and move on.

WTF, self?

you can also edit it again

after it’s posted if you need to.

I AM intangible!

by kabrink on Jan 5, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Although I've found that editing sometimes screw up the format even more

Just getting into the edit mode often adds hard returns between paragraphs and changes some other formatting. But it’s still worth a shot, and most of the odd formatting changes can be overcome.
