Christmas gifts II
So I'm Christmas shopping in PV and stop in the Kansas City Store and Denny Matthews is signing his Tales from the Royals Dugout so I decide to pick up a copy for my Dad. I strike up some small talk with him while he's signing the book and decide to ask him about the Farnsworth signing. The look on his face and roll of his eyes told me what he really thought, but he was quite diplomatic and only said that a red flag should go up when a player's resume shows a number of teams in succession and numerous quick deals involving the player occurs (Guillen anyone?). He cited the one exception as being Reggie Sanders. He said that Reggie was a true gentleman and a great clubhouse presence, always helpful and thoughtful to those around him ( a true mancrush?) Thought some of you would find this interesting, I did. Denny was a class act and very candid-----of course, I was buying his book.......

Denny is a glass act and has a good baseball mind
Of course his job prevents him from publicly speaking his mind very openly about the Royals. I think his comments were pretty much spot on. I don’t think Sanders was worth the money he signed for, but he was a decent player who was athletic enough to be productive deep into his career. Of course the injuries hit him, which completely screwed his last year with the Royals. But he was genuinely a nice guy and very professional from everything I’ve heard and read.

The Mystery of Reggie Sanders travels was a topic I remember reading qutie a bit about back in the day. Good player in the day. I know my OBP numbers are off (Databank doesn’t carry ROEs), but a career .267/.347/.487 hitters with decent power and speed (300+ career steals, 300+ career HRs, 300+ career doubles… not bad), and from what I remember and can find, decent defense… about 170 runs above average over his career, or 10 runs a year.
Good player in his day. Monster year in 1995 for the Reds… .306/.397.579, 28 HRs, 36 SB (12 CS). 41 runs above average, looking at some historical stats real quick, I’d guesstimate him at 6 WAR that year. Never came close to that again, of course

he is a "glass" act?
another typo or something deeper in your analysis?

A Couple of Things
I don’t know if you are new or if I haven’t been paying attention but I haven’t seen your screen name on here before. I love it. Steve Hovely is one of the first Royals I remember.
Also, I revere Denny and his opinions so I appreciate the insight even though it just confirms what I already knew and disliked greatly. I will attempt to speak of the matter no more.
I don't fight extra players.

I've been around, just don't comment much.
I’ve tried to do a Fanpost/Fanshot before but always screwed it up. New to the computer world. This one finally worked, kind of——don’t know how that spacing happened. Yeah, Hovley always intrigued me.

remembering reggie sanders
if only he’d stayed healthy that last year

When I was a very young girl,
I wanted to BE Denny. I’m glad that the mlb.com’s audio, along with XM Radio, have given people from all over the chance to listen to Denny. Sure, the Royals do a lot of dumb, embarrassing things, but we do have a lot we can be proud of, and Denny Matthews is very near the top of that list.

Yeah, I wanted to be a radio baseball guy for a while because of Denny
And I’ve listened to Denny do so many games on the radio that if I ever did it, I’d sound just like him. Well, I wouldn’t really sound like him because I wouldn’t be 1/10th as good as him, but I’d certainly use his phrasing, because to me, that is how it is supposed to be done.

When I was a kid
And went to Royals games, I’d do PBP quietly to myself, trying to emulate Denny. I was a nerd.

Are there any play-by-play women in MLB?
Seems like its about time there should be. What does Suzyn Waldman do for the Yanks, color analysis or PBP?

She used to do a bit of both for the YES Network
But last year she wasn’t in the booth for them, at least not on the TV side. I don’t know if she did any radio for them. I think she did some post-game interviews for YES. She’s a competent PBP and color commentator.

I think the Clemens thing might have put her on hold for a while

I think she was doing color for the radio side
although the yanks have one of those teams where there isn’t a clear PBP/color split

Yeah, Suzyn
was on the radio this year. My parents listen to games on XM, which always goes with the home crew, and they really liked listening to her when the Royals were in New York.

Denny's reason # 1
I became a Royals fan listening on the radio. (Thus the name)

I agree about Denny.
I think it’s indicative of his character, personality, and integrity that he’s lasted so long with the club and not become just a homer/sycophant or one of those bombastic/egomaniacal “it’s about me, not the game” broadcasters.

Very cool
I actually have been meaning to check Denny’s book out at the library.
