I Was Thinking

Ya know who would be a great pickup.. Trading for Giants LHP Noah Lowry.. Ive always liked this guy and I think when healthy can put up some good numbers.. He really doesnt fit in with them now, they have Lincecum, Cain, Johnson, Zito, and Sanchez.. They dont really have a good 1B situation and we have plenty of them.. and we dont have a Left handed starter.. So how would you feel about this trade 1B Ryan Shealy and RHP Julio Pimentel for LHP Noah Lowry.. How do you feel do you think its to much or not enough or do you say ah screw this trade

I wouldn't give up Pimintel also

The Giants have a need for a power hitting first baseman and Shealy might be enough to get Lowry closer to opening day.

I was thinking...

that Shealy might not be enough (just looking at his stats) until I did a little search about the specifics on Lowry’s injury. I’m still not sure what “exertional compartment syndrome” is, but anytime something is called an “unusual injury for a baseball player” to the point where the team is unable to find another player who has had the same surgery, and the prognosis is a “guess,” then that’s definitely a risky situation.

I’m still not one of those who think the Royals necessarily have a “logjam” at 1B, but this would be a decent option in removing one of the options. Only downside is that it might keep Gload on the roster (and thereby provide more incentive to keep Kila in Omaha until very late in the season).

I’d say this is the type of deal that teams like the Royals have to take a shot with from time to time. I would do it.

I mostly agree with you

I could be willing to do Shealy+ if need be, but probably not if the + is Pimentel.

they already have a Ryan Shealy

Lowry

I don’t know if I’d do it or not, but he is an interesting case study in ERA v. tRA…his ERA+ of 113 in 2007 must have been incredibly lucky considering his tRA+ of 85. He had a K/BB ratio of 1/1 for pete’s sake.

I wonder if his injury was apparent earlier, but he was “effective” so he kept on pitching.

We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.

It was luck, home park, team defense, and pitching in the NL

With a 19.5 LD, his BABIP should have been around .315, but was actually .288. His HR/FB was also unsustainably low at 6.9 —most starters regress to 10-11, while his previous career low was 8.8. His 74% strand rate was high as well for a pitcher with his peripherals. And with such a low swinging strike rate (6.3%), he was probably lucky with the number of strikeouts too.

His home park (whatever it is called now) also severely depresses HRs. The Giants rated as one of the better fielding teams in 2007. He also got the benefit of facing the NL hitters (pitchers in particular and the less talented hitters in general).

2004-2005 Lowry was a decent pitcher, but he was flat out terrible in 2006 and 2007.

I see Lowry as a not very talented pitcher with below average stuff who doesn't miss bats

He was pretty good once, but I think injuries have taken their toll on him. His injury risk going forward is significant, and I think it has hurt his stuff.

I advocated for Lowry a year ago

But his K-BB numbers were awful in 2007 and he has not proven he is healthy at all. Pass.

I'd love to have Lowry

We’ll give up Butler
