Mike Montgomery Tops Greg Schaum's KC Prospect List

Go check out the rankings, which include detailed comments. Schaum spends a ton of time on the minors and is one of the best sources, maybe the best, on this topic.

Random rankings of interest:

  • Mike Montgomery tops the list.
  • Wil Myers is ranked 3rd.
  • Chris Dwyer is ranked 6th.
  • John Lamb is ranked 9th.
  • Eric Basurto (Gload trade!) is 28th.

montgomery is awesome b/c of his demeanor, crow is awesome b/c of his moxie, duffy has tremendous ‘want’

i hope we have some players who will be awesome b/c of their talent…we have plenty of guys with moxie, want and a good demeanor already

I'm with you here

It’s great they are “gamers” or whatever. But it counts for absolutely nothing if they can’t play baseball very well.

good to know that catching is the organizations weakest position....

you’d think we’d be good when our weakest position is league averageish

Not surprising -

that’s what the Royals believe in, as well – potential over stats

Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

I guess

Some seem to rely a bit more on what the player has actually done though rather than “I think this guy will succeed under the tutelage of Royals coaching.” or “his stuff is good, it just hasn’t translated into results.”

And don't get me wrong

I think its a fine list, and Greg knows more about certain aspects of this organization than some writer for BA sitting in New York. I think he and I just differ a bit in player development philosophy.

Am I alone in being tremendously disappointed in Hoz/Moose?

Lough, Bianchi and Parraz all seem like safer bets (albeit with much less upside) at this point.

I agree, but would drop the trememdously...

This year will be a telling year for both. Moose moves to AA and that could be a killer. Hoz probably will be back at Wilmington and I question how good he will be. I still wish we would have drafted Smoak.

I am anxious to see Lough, Bianchi, Duffy and a few more in Omaha next season. The O’s may even have a decent team in 2010.

safer bets for what?

having two decent seasons in their late 20s and then being out of baseball?

probably yes, it all just depends on what your expectations are… there’s something to the scouting hype about Hosmer and Moose… they may never make it, but they still have a bigger chance of being a star player than Parraz

Yes.

More likely to make the majors, I guess. It is easy to forget how young those guys are, though. I should probably mitigate my disappointment for at least another year.

give moose and Hos 3 years and they'll be far better in AA than those guys....

sometimes we forget how much of an age difference there really is between those two groups of players

Just on numbers I would have put Duffy first on the list.

I think he could be in Omaha by the end of 2010.

Ok, unless I'm mistaken

Aren’t the top 12 guys all white?

by sterlingice on Oct 13, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

that is correct...

depending on your definition of white…i’ve heard some people say that they dont consider Greeks to be white…which would rule out Moose I believe.

thanks for including and reading my list

Thanks for adding my list to this site and for taking the time to read it…I was really torn this year in the direction I wanted this list to go…I definitely looked more at potential…as most of you know I am also heavily influenced on this list by baseball people I talk to throughout the season. I have learned (though) that some greatly exaggerate the potential of certain players. So, I have to be careful. Keating F.E came on real late when I got 2 glowing reports in less than a week on him. Swaggerty and LeRew were removed and are the 2 that on a BA type of list would definitely be on here
I was so disappointed in BA’s list from last year and when I found out who influenced that list I realized that KC list was (too be nice) less of a prioirty for them past #10….so I love that book but the Royals (at least last year) list was IMO not a good picture of this system

Where is Herrera in the system

? I liked what BA had to say about him and he had one good start prior to the injury. Will he be ready next year?

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
