Two quick upgrades for the Royals

Adrian Beltre to 3rd for $5M? Kelvim Escobar as a starter for $3M on a 1 year deal after his season long injury? Move Gordon to RF, Guillen to DH, Teahen is nontendered (his arb award will be too high for his production abilities). I suppose Gordon could also go to 1B but I really dislike that because I'd like to see Butler continue to play there while Kila gets some MLB work at 1B and DH. I wonder how long until he ends up in Japan? This also assumes Jacobs is gone.

I like all of that....

but what are the odds that beltre signs a 1 yr $5 milion deal? And, If we would sign beltre, I’d really like a 2nd year option….even for $10 million or so, if by some miracle we’re ready to contend in 2011

Beltre and Escobar are good buy low candidates, just maybe not for the Royals

The team should focus on buying cheap young talent in bulk — preferably players at least three years away from free agency. Not all will work out, but even if the Royals only hit on a few of them, it could still shave a year or more off the rebuilding process.

If there is still room the budget, relatively cheap reclamation projects like Escobar are a good idea. (Beltre might be available on a one-year deal, but I would not expect him to come so cheap). The only other veterans I would consider are cheap ($1-$2 million) Eric Hinske types to add depth to the major league roster but are still expendable. Hinske would be a nice fit because he would be a nice left-handed bat off the bench or an adequate stopgap starter at 1B/DH, but would not cost much, so he could be traded or released if a younger, better player needs his roster spot. Minor league free agent Chris Shelton is a right-handed version of Hinske, and likely could be had a minor league deal.

Hinske could hit in the middle of the order for the Royals vs. RHP

can also be a stopgap at RF/LF. Probably no worse than TEahen at 3B.

Hinske's UZR numbers for the outfield are surprisingly adequate, maybe even not bad

Although better than his end of the year numbers indicate (he took one for the team by playing 3B), Teahen really should be traded or non-tendered, especially if Hinske is available for a quarter of the price.

In theory I like these moves

but I have a couple concerns.

a) Is it too early to give up on Gordon? or would you get Beltre and let Gordon also go down to AAA and iron things out….I would like that more, not sure about his speed for an OF.

b) These moves seem sound therefore thus; probably will not happen (Royals constant thrown into the equation)

I don't get why you'd move Gordon off 3B?

Wouldn’t that lessen his value even more? And that’s assuming he could handle a positional change.

I don’t think we should look at free agents for anything more than “we cannot find any replacement level talent at all so we’re going to bring in this guy.” IOW, we shouldn’t sign any free agents.

I wouldn’t give Escobar more than a minor league deal. That guy hasn’t pitched in two years.

You are right. I don't really want to move AG off of 3B

But if they are going to do it, I would rather a legit 3B guy comes in over management giving Callaspo the job.

If Callaspo repeated his offensive performance

Wouldn’t that be pretty acceptable at 3B? Or do you not think he can repeat? I have my doubts I suppose.

if Callaspo repeated his 2009 line...

I’d be fine with giving him the chance to prove whether he can or can’t handle 3b and letting Gordon try to hack it in one of the COF positions. Gordon’s value will take a hit, but at least it wouldn’t force Butler into being a full-time DH, and it would leave room on the 25-man roster for Kila (assuming GMDM is smart and cuts bait on Jacobs).

Plus, if we move Bert over to 3b, it gives the Royals the chance to sign a second baseman with legit range to help cover for the giant ball of suck that is Yuniesky Betancourt (and third basemen don’t need quite the range that second basemen do, so Bert’s poor defense might be mitigated somewhat).

Please explain your doubts

Retro, I haven’t looked at his data, such as LD%, etc. – but just looking at it from a primitive point of view, he’s 26, has very good plate discipline, and showed some legitimate improvement in the power department.

Now I suppose there could be a “sophomore slump” to worry about, since this will be essentially his 2nd year of full-time duty – but shouldn’t we expect a 26 year old to, at the very least, maintain where he’s at?

from my perspective....

the only doubts i have stem from the fact that bert outperformed immensely what was expected of him at the plate…largely due to the out of nowhere power surge. Without that power surge, his bat wont play at third. If the power’s for real, the bat will.

Yea, that's it

A large spike in performance like this is usually temporary, and not sustained. But I’d love for him to prove me wrong. I think his BA won’t regress, but his SLG likely will quite a bit.

interesting

I’m not making any claims about Callaspo specifically, but in general, BA (really BABIP) regresses more heavily than 2B/HR rate

I think it would be

What I think won’t be acceptable at 3B is his glove.

by AxDxMx on Oct 15, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I cringe everytime I see Gordon attempt to catch a pop fly.

His “glove on the shoulder, make sure your head is out of the way,” makes me think it wouldn’t be an easy transition for him. So, no thanks to Gordon in OF.

That is definitely true.

Can we just blow this team up and start over next year? I want 4 keepers and then we’ll go expansion draft.

by AxDxMx on Oct 15, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

a buddy and I

were having a conversation about which 5 we would keep. No trades or anything like that. Just release 20 guys and who would you keep based on current production and what can be expected in the coming years? You could keep guys from the DL (Aviles, etc…). There are a couple of easy calls, but then what?

We came up with Greinke, Butler, DJ, Soria, and Gordon. We debated on Gordon since we could only keep 5 guys and who knows what you’re going to get from him going forward. But are you really going to keep Bert or Mitch or someone like that over Gordon? We also debated Soria because, if you cut 20 guys, do you really need a closer? So he’d only be kept if you decided to start him. And how long do you hang on to DJ, etc… It was a fun/sad exercise.

Same 5 I would take

The sad part of this is that Hochevar, Bannister, and Davies are basically dismissable without even giving it serious thought.

Nothing against DeJesus, but for a team that is supposedly rebuilding through a process that should be emphasizing young, cheap talent, it speaks volumes (negative volumes) that DDJ legitamitely makes this list at his age.

seriously

Probably our best chance of ever having real baseball in KC would be for Glass to move the Royals to Portland or Charlotte or something. Then, put together a City Baseball Committee charged with convincing someone like Mark Cuban to go for an expansion team in KC.
