This is an awesome link dump.

Quality work.

This is a good site, even for non-Royals fans.

BTW,

I did a pretty extensive link dump over at Athletics Nation today, so if any of you fine folks have even more time to kill at the end of this one,

come on down!

did the final comment on the Wingo post come to fruition? (can’t think of why else it would have made the link list)

Can't believe the Shock are moving to Tulsa

What about the tradition?

They’re a women’s basketball team, right?

I have to say I'm a bit surprised

that the WNBA is still in operation

I haven’t looked forward to the next Simmons column/podcast like this in years.

they have almost no overhead

most teams have arena deals in place with parent nba teams, and their salaries are low, with small teams

I like Dave Cameron

I think he does fine work at USS Mariner and Fangraphs.

But I did take a bit of pleasure in seeing him get ripped apart for posing some preposterous “sports talk” level transaction ideas for the Mariners:

possibly more unrealistic than my idea

“Trade Jose Lopez, Mark Lowe, and Jason Vargas to Chicago for John Danks. "

jeezuz f’ing christ. that literally is nearly one of those "Gobble, Buck, and Teahen for _______ (insert young superstar) trade scenarios.

I'd also like to know

In what world Nick Johnson will receive almost twice as much in a one year deal than Russ Branyan will.

It will be interesting

Guy with a bad injury rep (Johnson, although Branyan isn’t exactly Gehrig) vs. guy who “Ks way too much”

definitely will be interesting....

i can see branyan taking less money annually to get a multi year deal…to get some security and consistency in his life….there was an article in USA today where he was talking about how appreciative of the opportunity that jack z gave him when nobody else was and quotes from his wife about how they’re sick of moving twice a year.

He couldn't get a minor league deal

when Jack Z and Doug M let him play for Nashville. That is also his home.

John Danks

For Alberto Callaspo, Robinson Tejeda and Carlos Rosa. Isn’t that pretty much the same trade?

by RoyalsRetro on Oct 21, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

If Lopez ever escapes Safeco and its deadly effects on right-handed pull hitters

he might be a 3.0+ WAR player. He hit 313/348/535 on the road last year. And unlike Callaspo, Lopez does not give back 1/3 of his offensive value on defense (+1.8 UZR in 2009, +0.8 UZR/150 for career). He is not a bad buy low candidate.

Danks is a bit overrated too. His outstanding 2008 was significantly helped by unsustainable HR/FB rate of 7.4%. His career line is 7.0 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 1.2 HR/9, 4.42 FIP, 41.1% GB%, which is probably pretty close to his true talent level. At his age, he is a reasonable bet to improve his K/BB going forward, but home runs are always going to be a problem for him, which somewhat limits his upside. He is an above average starter right now, but we are not talking about the next Greinke or even Jon Lester.

But, yeah, that being said, it is an unrealistic trade scenario, albeit not a wholy unreasonable one.

by Gopherballs on Oct 21, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

perhaps

but at least Tejeda and Rosa have good upside, as opposed to Vargas who is a nobody, and Lowe who is a walking injury.

Examples?

I’d really like to see more of this. I was really disappointed, I honestly thought he’d be more creative than this. Its so fanboyish to say “if I could get another team to trade their best pitcher to us and up payroll by $30 million, I could turn this team around! Why is management too stupid to see this!!!!”

the one that sticks in my head

Is when he suggested signing Bob Howry as a closer rather than Trevor Hoffman. I suppose thats as much about the belief that the 9th inning is just another inning and a team shouldn’t put big money there as well as the question of how well Hoffman can stay ahead of father time. Its early. I’ll mention others when I think of them.

by Salty on Oct 21, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually, taking Howry over Hoffman makes a lot of sense

Howry has been a very good high leverage reliever, including past success as a closer, and effective against lefties as well. For a team on a budget, paying Howry one third the cost of Hoffman is a reasonable alternative. And I am someone who really likes Hoffman.

by Gopherballs on Oct 21, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I watched Bob Howry a lot over the past couple years

He isn’t a closer. He isn’t a set up man. The Giants probably regret signing him at all. It makes sense for a team that doesn’t expect to compete.
