Zack Greinke Trade Completed???

From 'Brew Crew Ball' SB nation site:

Rambling Al stumbled upon a great Zack Greinke rumor.  Apparently, Zack is practically a Brewer right now, having been traded for JJ Hardy, Mat Gamel, Angel Salome, and Manny Parra.  The Brewers and Royals are just waiting for the WS to end before it can go through.

Needless to say, this is unsubstantiated.  I'm wondering where the Badger Blogger is on this story, though.  Covering the Zack Greinke trade rumors the way the Zack Greinke trade rumors fear!

Surely this isn't true. This is absolutely crazy. I would think it would take a lot more than that shitty package. What do you guys think?

Poll
Obviously most of us (hopefully all of us) agree that Greinke should never be traded, but if he was what do you think about this package of player in return?
This is a great deal! Do it!

It's bad enough for people to make stuff up

They were at almost completed and you took it a notch further to actually completed.

They'd have to take Guillen and Yuni too.

If they trade Zack, there will be riots in the streets. I will personally riot in the streets.

Would KC make this trade if the Brewers agreed to take Guillen?

Taking Guillen would be taking $13 million off the books which could be the same as adding 2 more players.

I would obviously hate to see Greinke go

and I hope this isn’t true…but is there any idea of what an objective analysis of the relative value of this trade would be?

the two most recent examples I can think of are CC and Cliff Lee, with Lee being more similar because he wasn’t in a contract year.

Carlos Carrasco
Lou Marson
Jason Donald
Jason Knapp

It would have to be a lot more cause Zack is so young with such a favorable contract.

To be honest, I doubt there’s a team in baseball that have the quality/bulk/areas of need-type of prospects to justify trading Zack.

Allard Baird was rumored

to be preparing a massive Greinke offer before we extended him. We would be smart to talk to the RedSawks as they’ll lure him in free agency anyway.

by Dadunca on Oct 26, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Greinke is honest to a fault most times

And he says he only wants to pitch in KC. I believe him. As long as he’s getting close to fair value on his contracts, I think he’ll stay here, as he won’t have to deal with stuff that he doesn’t like (mostly attention from millions more people). Unless KC is horrible for the next 2 years, I see this being the most likely course of action.

by AxDxMx on Oct 26, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I really hope your right

Zack would own KC if that were true. He’s crossed over demographics in a way I’ve never seen in a local athlete.

if i remember right

he said the only reason he signed the extension was because he thought the Royals were going in the right direction to be competitive, if they arent competitive at the end of his extension i dont think he will stay, but i dont think he goes to a big market team, because he doesnt want the media attention

To somewhere like Milwaukee

Ironically.

Who knows. If the Royals are still bottom bumping in 4 years he probably should get out of town. A pitcher of his talent deserves to be on the post-season stage.

Sorry to be so cynical here....

But these Brewers fans need to stop obsessing over such lopsided hypothetical/fictional trade offers and pretending they are even remotely true.

IMO, in his offer, we would not land one above average player. Parra, IMO, has the greatest upside of the four. Salome and Gamel (and even Hardy, who was rushed) have/had really posted only one outstanding season apiece beyond rookie ball.

Without blinking, I still wouldn’t put this offer beyond Dayton’s contemplation, but….this hypothetical sucks.

Still has an excellent chance of being completely wrong

but why get all worked up over nothing? How many years does Zack have left? I’m not sure its a fair deal for the Brewers but none of it matters. It’s like rosterbation threads that go on constantly. Anybody can be a writer at bleacher report. Anybody can make a fanpost. Anybody can go on in the comments at MLBTR or anywhere else.

Hell, the guy who made this post referred to the trade as completed. What the hell? That hasn’t been “reported” anywhere. Whoever is talking about Zack being traded is just as bad as the Royals fans who want 3 or 4 or more premium players back.

by Salty on Oct 26, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

it’s silly. not even worth getting worked up over. there might be like 2 or 3 teams that could actually put together a package that makes sense. even then, probably not happening.

The Braves

Goes without saying. Anything from them is touched with greatness.

But seriously, i guess it depends what you want back. There are a few teams out there who between young major leaguers and minor leaguers could put together something respectable. If you only want prospects, that number drops.

by kcbottom9th on Oct 25, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know that I'd say Greinke should never be traded

If he could be traded for multiple good, young, cheap players/mlb-ready prospects, then I’d trade him. The Royals have many holes that need to be filled. If the Royals could pull off a trade that fills multiple holes with a good players who are under team control for years, then I’d do it.

agreed

as much as i’d hate to trade him, at some point we’ve got to improve the overall team. let’s hope that we’ve got some guys coming up that can help soon.

i was about to say the same thing

BUT…

you’d have to get…what…at least 4 or 5 young players to make it even work? some of the young players/prospects will inevitably fail. you need at least 3 very good players to work out to make a deal fair. if TB came along and offered a package headlined by say — SP Price, SP Davis, CF Jennings, and something else (SS Brignac?), yeah you gotta think about it. but would they do that? go ask a Rays fan and they’d probably think that’s too much. i’d say it’s not enough because we have all the leverage, and someone will likely fail from that group.

by doublestix on Oct 25, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

that's the point

there are fair trades, but teams would be loathe to make them

again, Longoria straight up would be fair, actually probably unfair to the Rays because of Longoria’s contract

Yeah, it would be hard to find another team willing to make a trade for Greinke which made sense for the Royals

Soria, on the other hand… It would be easy to find someone who would overpay for a great, young, cheap closer.

I'm trying to think of which dumb GMs don't already have good closers and good prospects

or at least “good” in the case of K-Rod.

The Angels might be desperate due to their horrible bullpen situation. Reagins isn’t Dayton Moore dumb, by a long shot, though. I’m also not sure what players they’d have. They seem to have soured on Kendrick, who I still think is good, but he’s not enough by himself and I’m not sure what his service time situation is. They wouldn’t do Kendrick + Aybar, and I’m not sure what to think of Brandon Wood. Don’t know their system at all.

Do the Cubs have any good young players? Houston doesn’t.

I don't think it even necessarily takes a dumb GM to pull of that kind of deal

The over-valuation of closers is still a widespread phenomenon among MLB GM’s. Any GM covetous of a shutdown closer (and one who is young, cheap and under team control for many years) would jump at the chance to get Soria and would likely give up a more valuable group of players than what he’d get in return.

Cubs do

I don’t think there’s much at the top level, but then Randy Wells was a fill in from AAA who pitched better than most of their starters last year.

by Salty on Oct 28, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

And the Brewers are also giving up Fielder to get LaRussa, Pujols, Molina, and Wainwright…
