2010 Hitters/Fielders - Snapshot of the roster and salaries
Similar to the 2010 Relievers post from several days ago, this is meant to present a snapshot of who remains on the roster, can we jettison some dead weight, and are there any holes to be filled? The particulars about how many batters the team keeps on the 25-man and how many infielders/outfielders/Teahen-Bloomquist-IF/OF hybrids are kept will have a factor in the final roster (please allow some leeway for fudged arbitration numbers, contract minimums for guys like Pena and Maier, and depending on how you allocate the cash contribution from the Mariners for Yuni). But, given what we know:
--Salaries adapted from Cot's, with some estimations made (nothing crazy); wOBA from Statcorner

Josh Anderson / L / 0.26 / 0.5 ?

Infielders
7 Yuniesky Betancourt / R / 0.282 / 3.375
8 Billy Butler / R / 0.374 / 0.5 ?
9 Alex Gordon / L / 0.32 / Arb1 3
10 Mark Teahen / L / 0.334 / Arb3 4
11 Willie Bloomquist / R / 0.304 / 1.7

Tug Hulett / L / 0.132 / 0.5 ?
Kila Ka'aihue / L / N/A / 0.5 ?
Mario Lisson / R / N/A / 0.5 ?
J.R. House
Ryan Shealy / L
Ryan Freel
That leaves us with 10 players that have existing contracts and are expected to make the roster for 2010 (assuming both Gordon and Teahen are offered arbitration), and the salary for these 10 is right around $30M.
This group of 10 is short a catcher (or is it short two catchers? can't wait to find out), which would cost around $3.5M if Buck or Olivo is retained--more if a FA is added, less if a AAA replacement is used. So that brings us to the question marks: Buck, Olivo, Crisp, Anderson, Aviles, and Jacobs.
The infield has plenty (too many, one might say) of players under contract, so my guess would be that the next priority is adding a second CF to accompany Maier. Crisp with a team-friendly contract based on incentives seems like a smart move, but Anderson as a cheap backup isn't the end of the world either (at least as we slog through 2010). A CF free agent or trade is a possibility, and as has been discussed at RR, there are some attractive under-used CFs around the league as possible trade targets.
Adding another C and CF probably costs at least $6 to $7M, though using cheaper players like Anderson could cost much less. This brings the salary total to about $37M, plus $41M for the pitchers, and the team is already right up against the $80M ceiling that we would expect Moore to be given.
This still leaves Jacobs, Aviles, and either Buck/Olivo up in the air--depending on how the bullpen shakes out, another fielder (or DH) may be added, which raises the question of whether Aviles makes the roster, whether Jacobs gets renewed or not, and whether the team carries three catchers with Buck/Olivo/Pena again.

Bringing Jacobs back would be close to one of the dumbest moves GMDM has made.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

If he nontenders him and brings him back for less than $1M I could stomach that
But he is pretty worthless, so probably still not worth it.

If he is on the team next year.
I may just explode.

i'm 50/50 on whether this actually happens
Jacobs has been working all season on being more patient (taking more pitches) and so DM re-signs him under the reasoning that he’s going to bounce back with the culmination of Seitzer’s tutelage.

50/50 on whether Jacobs comes back or whether gordonrules explodes?

If it is truly even money, I'll put a hundred on gordonrules exploding
By the time the GM meetings start next month, you will have to bet five to win two.

Sarge want out of LA
I could see our short sighted GM making a move for him. This would also cause me to explode.

It's abundantly clear, post after post,
that Jacobs should not be brought back, for many reasons.
It is because of this abundant clearness that I think I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Moore talks himself into bringing him back.
Would it really surprise anybody here if he did? I can already hear the lame excuse making for doing so – we need power, he just needed a year to get acclimated to the Al, etc. etc.
God, I hope I’m wrong.

If the Royals do not bring back Jacobs
does he get a major league deal from someone else?
by Gopherballs on Oct 28, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe he could play DH at park that favors lefties?
but he’d have to take a low salary, you’d think, and/or a team that doesn’t mind taking a ~$3M chance on him.

Unfortunately for Jacobs
the number of teams that fit this criteria (AL, DH slot open, park does not hurt lefties, and willing to sign him for $3 million) is maybe one, the White Sox. If you drop the last requirement, he might be able to add Texas and Seattle, but he is neither team’s type of player. The additional problem for him is that like last offseason, there is likely to be a glut of 1B/DH types, so the few DH slots that are open will likely be filled by better players. If the White Sox can get Thome back on a one-year deal, they are going to go with him. And if Jacobs is not in line to start, no team is going to spend $3 million for a bench player with no defensive value.

maybe he can go to NY as a pinch hitter and just put balls up in the air to right field
where they’ll just blow right out of the park
i could see a team like Seattle signing him to a minor league contract, but that’s about it, huh?

Read from someone who got to interview Arbuckle
that they thought that Jacobs just needed to adjust to the league (1/2-2/3rds of the way through the season), and that even knowing what they did, they would trade for Jacobs over playing Kila every time – because Jacobs is “proven”.
Unless I'm wrong...

would love to know the definition of “proven” in their eyes.

So much for Arbuckle being a reason for hope
Should have figured as much when Dayton brought him in so fast, anyway. Boy, the Phillies sure screwed up letting this genius go.
