Game 161 Open Thread - Royals at Twins

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins, Oct 3, 2009 4:10 PM EDT

Huge game for the Royals today, as Zack Greinke makes his final start of the season. In a way, its better that the Royals lost last night, as now the Twins stand just one game back of the Tigers. A shutdown Greinke start can either end Minnesota's playoff hopes, or insure that at the very best, they'll only be in a one-game playoff.

Should be incredibly fun.

The Last Zack Attack of the Year

As bad as the Royals season has been overall, following Zack this year has been the best story in KC sports. I want the Royals season to end, but I do not want to stop watching this marvelous pitching.

After tonight, we will be subjected to a terrible football team, followed by 3 months of no sports. It’s the culmination of a great year for ZG, but a sad day for me.

Dear Zack:

Please don’t suck. I know you hate pitching indoors, but please don’t suck. i have to listen to the fox announcers.

That is all. Thanks!

We have Bloomquist leading off. Damn you trey hillman.

Against a RH too.

Glad that platooning stuff never took off after Casey Stengel won a jillion World Series using it with the 50’s Yankees.

4) And most importantly, so long as he avoids a complete meltdown today, I think he’s got the Cy Young wrapped up.6 minutes ago from TweetDeck

(If Greinke throws exactly 6.1 IP and allows 2 ER, or exactly 2 IP and allows 1 ER, he will exactly tie Nelson in ERA at 2.076923.)7 minutes ago from TweetDeck

3) If Greinke gives up no more than 2 ER and throws 6.2 IP, he will break Roger Nelson’s 37-year-old team record for ERA.8 minutes ago from TweetDeck

2) If Greinke doesn’t give up an earned run and throws 6.1 IP, his ERA drops below 2. With 7 scoreless IP, his ERA will round down to 1.99.12 minutes ago from TweetDeck

1) Greinke needs 7 strikeouts to tie, and 8 strikeouts to break, Dennis Leonard’s 32-year-old team record for Ks (244) in a season.

I would bet my life savings

that it’s not DDJ’s decision.

WTF, self?

by minda33 on Oct 3, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know you are hell-bent on this idea of DDJ begging his way

out of games because he’s soft or whatever.

But pull your damn head out of your ass. He was in the middle of a very respectable run, overcoming a dreadful start to make this the best season of his career. Why the fuck would he willingly miss out on these few last opportunities to keep up the good hitting?

WTF, self?

by minda33 on Oct 3, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah- that's my thought at first blush

But I was wondering if there were any official word on DDJ not playing

by sterlingice on Oct 3, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is no way it's his decision.

Players are not in charge of making those decisions.

WTF, self?

by minda33 on Oct 3, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, but you know what I mean

i.e. saying they are hurt vs team deciding he’s too hurt to play, etc

by sterlingice on Oct 3, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ahh....its only davey that they're extra cautious with...i get it....

b/c he’s so important to this teams future. Nevermind how they deal with guys who actually might be apart of the future or actually cost alot of money like Meche, Banny, Soria, Aviles, Crisp, Guillen.

Now, explain to me why I should just assume that the organization is being sooooooooo super cautious with davey. There’s just absolutely NOTHING that goes against my thoughts on DJ—not a single shred of evidence. While there are multiple points of evidence of Davey turning minor day to day things into week to week things.

Have you ever heard one of our players say anything good or glowing about Trey???

Seriously. The Tigers loves Leyland. The Twins love Gardenhire. The White Sox love playing for Ozzie. Same thing for Torre and for Cox. I’ve never heard any Royal player defend or prop Trey. He’s in over his head.

Like how he uses a disastrously bad bullpen

He’s not responsible for Farnsworth being on the team, plus there’s no-one in the minors yet to plug the gaps.

Yeah, but I think doctordave77 makes a decent point

I remember Soren talking a couple of years ago about Buddy Bell and how you can’t really blame the manager when it’s “death by shark or death by alligator”.

(That said, he does have other pretty bad faults to be sure and I’d rather Hillman not be our manager.)

I am so over Teahen now

his play in the second half of the season has been putrid. I doubt that he has a place on this team next year. I think he is at best a utility player, being miscast (like St. Willie).

I'm glad

the Twins won. After Zack couldn’t get the win anyway, I was rootin’ for them cuz I’d rather see them in the playoffs than the Tigers.

Otherwise….outside of Zack & Butler, I’m all for getting rid of ANY of these losers. And if we can score big in a Soria trade, do it. I love the guy, but he’s pretty worthless on this particular team. And our dipshit manager doesn’t know what to do w/a bullpen, anyway.
