Game 162 Open Thread - Royals at Twins
Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins, Oct 4, 2009 2:10 PM EDT
Here we go. The last game of the season. Detroit's magic number on Thursday was two... and it is still two. The Twins have won three straight, and Detroit has lost three straight. Just a complete collapse. The odds were long that there would even be a playoff, and now, by the end of today, Detroit could be out.
Amazing.
This is it, boys. The last game thread of 2009. I want everyone here... lets go for 1000+ comments, multiple overtflow threads, maybe even an important Royals win.

From the Yahoo sports preview:
Hochevar, however, looks to avoid losing a third straight start after giving up eight runs in six innings of an 8-2 loss at New York on Monday.
"I need to do a better job of executing," said the right-hander, who’s 1-9 with a 7.66 ERA in his last 12 starts.

DiNardo sleeps better
after talking with the official scorer about Cabrera’s comebacker in the first inning Friday.
Credit pitcher Lenny DiNardo with honesty. DiNardo was originally charged with an error on a ball off his glove in the second inning on Friday night, and the Twins wondered if instead it should be a single for Orlando Cabrera. Asked about it afterward, DiNardo informed the official scorer that he lost the high bouncer in the lights, and the ruling was changed from an error to a hit. It also added two earned runs to DiNardo’s ERA. “I lost it in the lights,” DiNardo said. "I wouldn’t feel right if I lied and said, ‘Oh, it’s an error. I don’t want these [runs] to be earned.’ " His ERA went from 9.28 to 10.14. “Plain and simple, the runs scored anyway, and it’s not like they can take them away whether they’re earned or not,” DiNardo said. “Whether I’m losing two earned runs or losing some sleep because I lied about a play, I’d rather give up two earned runs.”
Truth about failure: usually in short supply around this team. Good for DiNardo.
Why doesn't Willie E7 Bloomquist talk to the official scorer and admit he should recieve an error for yesterday's debacle and lower ZG's ERA?

I’m glad we’re running our best lineup out there again in this extremely important game
I realize its a Sunday in the world of football...
but it saddens me that the Last game of the year is not on TV.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
They have White Sox-Tigers on MLBN
So that’s what I’m watching
Remember those halcyon days
When we all thought Hochevar’s problems came from pitch tippng and he went and threw a 3 hit shutout?
Yeah, me neither
I'm feeling oddly nostalgic about this season
I don’t know why. It just seems pivotal for some reason with Greinke exploding, Butler blossoming, but everything else fading to crap, including our hope for the next few years.
So, right now the Royals would draft 4th
If they win and the Indians lose, they would draft 5th. Any other combination of wins/losses results in the Royals picking 4th by virtue of their worse record in 2008
(from wiki)
*The general draft order is the reverse order of the previous year’s standings. If two teams finish with identical records, the previous year’s standings of the two teams is the tiebreaker, with the team having a worse record receiving the higher pick.
Speaking of the Tigers
They just get a bases loaded walk to lead 1-0.
Does having to pitch Verlander today sink and realistic chance of them winning in the 1st round against the Yankees, if they make it, or were their chances already very slim?
Or are baseball playoffs really a bit of a crapshoot? Or..?
Yes
I think Verlander pitching today hurts them, but it is a crapshoot so it may not matter. It also helps that the Yankees get to pick when their series starts, so Im sure they would start it as soon as possible to give Verlander even less rest.

Rayburn with a rifle shot to left
And the Tigers are up 3-0
No one has mentioned
Fourth place depends on today’s games. Is there a playoff if we both win or lose?
That would be a fun cruel fate
“As part of MLB’s policy that there can be no ties, except in midseason exhibition play, every team that tied in the standings had their one game playoff Monday as they tried to recoup some of the season’s financial losses.
The Tigers beat the Twins 1-0 to determine who would go to the playoffs.
But the most exciting game was the Indians-Royals 11-10 contest, attended by 7 fans, where Anthony Lerew and Carlos Carrasco each gave up 6 in the 1st and neither bullpen could hold a lead. There was a major incident in the game as both teams complained about umpire Rick Reed’s small strike zone and, in the 7th, Royals pitcher Kyle Farnsworth repeatedly appeared to be throwing at the umpire’s head and failing miserably.
In San Diego, where the Astros and Padres were playing for 6th worst team in the NL, Geoff Blum sported a Hawaiian t-shirt instead a jersey and took his golf clubs up to the plate in protest of having to play. "
(I really wanted to go with Matt Stairs and beer helmet in that last paragraph)
But the dang Phillies are in the playoffs
Is Stairs going to be on the playoff roster?
If not, they can still pass him through waivers and get him to San Diego or Houston. They’d better hurry, though.
They can't do it
because they’d never agree on whether to hold it on the site of Kansas City Municipal Stadium or Cleveland Municipal Stadium.
That would be interesting if it was in Cleveland
They dumped most of Cleveland Municipal Stadium in the lake to make an artificial reef.
it seems like the Royals have had a really bad season
Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

so
who is starting for the Twins, and why are we not starting Buntzilla in the outfield?
It’s great that the Leader of Men, Trey Hillman, gave Josh Anderson a shot every day and didn’t yank him around the lineup and bench him vs. RHP in favor of Bloomquist.
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
still beats an outfielder like Bloomquist
who has to ice his knees and isn’t a real outfielder anyways
Greinke wins that game if Hillman put Anderson in the OF instead of Bloomquist
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
Maybe
but Anderson has been very iffy in the corners himself. He probably would have put Maier in left and Anderson in center. Maier might have had it, I don’t know.
But anyway, it’s time to let it go.
Anderson should be gone after this year
he’s not that fast and it’s not like he particularly plays smart (standing in the box, etc)
Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis
He's horrible
and the only reason he was here is that he was basically free and we had nobody healthy to impersonate an outfielder in the system. Why he’s had so many PAs while Pena, for example, has been collecting dust is a total mystery.
that and

Graduate with a B.S. from the Dayton Moore School of Stats Analysis

Trey refuses to or is incapable of understanding that; 1) Bloomers is not a leadoff hitter against anyone, much less RHP, 2) Bloomers is not an OF, 3) even Joker is a better choice than Bloomers to play OF against RHP, 4) Mitch is not DDJ, 5) Mitch is not a #2 batter, 6) Callaspo is a #2 hitter, 7) Jakers’ occasional HR does not make him a #4 batter, 8) burying A-Gor in the 8 hole is beyond stupid in this lineup, 9) BPJ should be catching against RHP. And don’t anticipate that I would’ve, but I was thinking that I wouldn’t be shocked if Denny hung it up today. Dunno if it’d be his style to do it on the air, but just wondered.
That thought occurred to me too. He sounded sick — congested, anway — during the last homestand, and I was surprised he went on the road trip, until I started to wonder whether he was planning to wind things down even more after this season.
41 years
and a richly deserved HoF slot. I love Denny almost as much as Hal McRae and Amos Otis. I’m not ready for his retirement.
I don't think he's ready to retire completely
Like Lon Simmons, who did a few games for the Giants for several years after his retirement as a full-time broadcaster, I think Denny’s schedule would just become sparser — not empty.

Strategy question
When attempting an Olivo, is it better to toss the bat aside or run with it?
On the one hand, you can probably run faster after you get rid of the bat, but on the other hand, it almost surely slows you down to make the toss.
I guess this is what divides the pros from the wannabes.
Maybe you run with it until you’ve eluded the catcher’s tag (if he’s got the ball, that is). Then you drop it and go.

That reminds me:
Indians are down 8-6 in the 6th.
So if Boston holds on there, we’ll be tied for last, which is obviously SO much better than owning last place.

And then Finley, who always seemed to be jiggering with the outfield fences, reconfigured Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium to resemble Yankee Stadium as closely as possible: he bumped left-center field out and pulled right field in. Most distinctively, he tightly curled the fence in the right field corner to a distance that exactly matched that of Yankee Stadium: 296 feet. The new right field corner in Kansas City, which featured a little wooden-seat bleacher in its triangular footprint, was brightly painted with the moniker "K.C. Pennant Porch."

Without all those injuries and if Butler would've turned a few of those missed 3-6-3 double plays
we could’ve been contenders. We got off to an 18-11 start, anyway.
This MST3K movie just keeps getting "better"
It has Bernard Lee and Lois Maxwell (the original M and Moneypenny)
And, yes, Sean Connery
’s younger brother
Callaspo now at
.30035
If he makes another out, he’ll still be at .29983, which good enough for .300 in the record book. So Trey won’t take him out now for that. (Don’t know if the Royals are paying attention. There was some gaming to allow Randy Winn to finish at .300 in 2007, so it happens.)
